Hello everyone,
Today, I would like to share my thoughts on the sustainable future of Japan’s tourism, focusing on what I believe is our “Authentic Value.” I invite you all to share your comments and engage in this discussion.
“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.”
— Mark Twain
In recent years, Japan has rapidly captured the world’s attention as a tourist destination—it’s truly a boom. Renowned publications like Forbes, Time Magazine, and The New York Times have featured Japan as a top “must-visit” country, significantly boosting its popularity. This is indeed excellent news.
However, we have a bitter memory from the 1980s when we were swept up in a similar boom. Back then, Japan showcased its powerful industrial products and economic strength to the world, but after the economic bubble burst, we suffered through a long period of recession.
Observing the current inbound tourism surge, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease that we might be repeating past mistakes. As history often rhymes, we must be cautious.
Therefore, we must carefully consider whether this surge is temporary or can lead to sustainable growth. Rather than relying on a fleeting tourism boom, Japan requires a solid brand strategy to remain a genuinely loved destination over the long term.
Here, I propose a new brand concept for Japan: “Culture & Nature,” but this is not my original idea.
Last year, an international adventure tourism conference was held in Hokkaido, and the event organizer conducted a survey asking participants, “What is Japan’s greatest appeal?”
And the most frequent responses were “Culture” and “Nature.” (see the image attached). Tourism professionals from around the globe identified these two elements as Japan’s most substantial assets.
“Culture & Nature”
These are not just tourist resources; they embody over a thousand years of history and rich ecosystems. This represents Japan’s “Authentic Value.”
Culture symbolizes the deep-rooted history and traditions found throughout Japan, reflecting the unique characteristics of each region. Nature refers to the beautiful, seasonally changing landscapes and the richly biodiverse environments. With 68% of Japan’s land covered by forests, diverse ecosystems thrive here. This “Authentic Value” has been built over time and possesses an enduring charm that isn’t swayed by passing trends.
Our “Culture & Nature” concept is a sustainable tourism strategy centered around Japan’s authentic essence. Instead of depending on short-term trends, we aim to convey Japan’s allure as a destination that will be cherished for generations to come.
I sincerely hope to explore the potential of Japan’s “Culture & Nature” with all of you. By combining our passion and expertise, let’s create new travel experiences of actual value. Let’s take the first step in bringing Japan’s genuine charm to the world together.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to the possibility of collaborating to build a sustainable future for Japan’s tourism.
