In winter, the dense forests of Maries’ fir at Hachimantai Summit transform into a field of unique snow monsters. The summer green of this alpine marshland is replaced with endless white and an army of mysterious frost-covered trees (“juhyo” in Japanese).

With an experienced guide, you can hike over Hachimantai’s famous powder snow into the backcountry where you will learn about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while enjoying an eerie yet beautiful winter scene that few people have the opportunity to experience.

A third generation family-owned business, Luce (ルーチェ) serves delicious wood-fired pizzas that would make Nonna proud! They even have a seasonal pizza menu that makes the most of local ingredients.

Have you ever tried snowshoeing?
Showshoes are designed to help you walk more easily on deep snow, allowing you to explore previously out of reach areas. What’s more, even children can learn to walk in snowshoes, meaning those of all ages can enjoy the feeling of fresh powder snow underfoot. What better way to warm up after a full day on the slopes than in a natural onsen (hot spring)? ♨
And Hachimantai has plenty of onsen to choose from!
Here are three local onsen that are open until late – perfect for your après ski soak:

1. Mori-no-yu (森乃湯)
Located in the center of Hachimantai’s onsen village and only a short distance from Hachimantai Resort (Panorama & Shimokura ski areas), this onsen facility is set up solely for day visitors and is very popular with locals. They have simple sulfur spring indoor and outdoor baths and even offer discounted entry on presentation of your same day lift ticket (from Hachimantai Resort).

2. Appi Onsen Shirakaba-no-yu (安比温泉白樺の湯)
Located within Appi Kogen Ski Resort, this is one of the largest onsen facilities in Tohoku (north-eastern Japan), offering both indoor and outdoor baths (with great views of the highlands!) and a sauna. Plus, it’s just a short walk from Appi’s main gondola station. There's also half-price entry on the 26th day of each month.

3. Azumi-no-yu (あずみの湯)
This popular local onsen facility is located a little off the beaten track to the north of Appi Kogen Ski Resort. Set up for day visitors, it features simple alkaline spring indoor and outdoor baths and a sauna. The onsite restaurant also serves lunch.

Carve up the night at Appi Kogen with Illuminated Night Skiing! ✨⛷🏂

65,000 LED lights decorate the trees and the Appi rabbit even makes an appearance in the form of a giant lantern. The Central Quad Lift will operate 4:00-8:00 every evening from 24th December to 4th January plus every Friday and Saturday night until 22nd March.

Night-time lift tickets can be purchased for ¥5,000 each (only available at Appi Kogen Ski Resort). A same evening return bus from Morioka Station and drink ticket package is available online (prior booking essential). Please see the resort's website for more details.

Daikokumori Cooperative trading as Hachimantai CAT Tours operate CATs (snowmobiles) in the Daikokumori backcountry area (formerly Hachimantai Ski Area). The CATs are used by several local accredited tour companies for guided backcountry tours. For more information, please inquire at your ski resort or accommodation.

*Please note that skiing and snowboarding in backcountry or unpatrolled areas is inherently risky and you should only venture out if you are an experienced skier/snowboarder accompanied by a qualified guide and the appropriate safety equipment.
