Big update this week - click through to read
We would like to share with you all the intricacies of the funding side of things… and why we are kicking off this fundraising initiative with a goal of $2Million.
As you know, Steve has now left hospital and is living in an NDIS approved unit that includes support for his daily care. Steve needs 24/7 supervision, and the prognosis is that he will need this for the rest of his life. In hours & costs… that is 168 hours per week and that roughly equates to $8,500 per week… $442,000 per year. That doesn’t include the roof over his head, food on the table or any of the sessions with the multiple therapists Steve needs to continue to make gains. The next 6-18 months are the critical window for improvement.
Steve is in a wheelchair for all mobility & must be supervised constantly throughout transitioning from bed to the wheelchair and then toilet, shower chair & car throughout the day. Steve has not yet been able to complete the everyday tasks of reading & ordering off a menu or cutting up food for himself to enjoy without a carer assisting… and we are all learning the basics of how to fund his shopping and cooking.
Government support wise… the first NDIS plan commenced on the 22nd of December 2020 and will terminate on the 22nd of June 2021. The next plan will be written up based on capacity and reports from all contributing therapists. The cover is specific and there are items that are stated and hence cannot be used for anything other than the stated cost… for example his support coordinator and financial management.
The current NDIS plan had to consider the fact that Steve did not own a suitable home or have the support to provide 24/7 care. With the help of the OT Team and many knowledgeable friends, we have been able to engage an experienced Support Coordinator with Community Interlink. With her help we are trying to maximize this plan and work on tailoring the next plan.
Once the budget for his basic accommodation and care was confirmed within the current plan, the cost of therapy was considered…we are still trying to maximize this part of the NDIS Plan. We hope that it will cover Physio, OT, Speech and spatial awareness for the recommended hours… but that is not certain. The budget for these has to include travel time and report writing which reduces the actual face to face therapy.
The NDIS have contributed approximately $800 for transport in this plan. They will assist with modification of the correct car but not the original purchase… & unfortunately Steve does not currently own a car, so this plan doesn’t factor in any car modifications.
Whilst Steve is pictured to be smiling and seemingly OK, with us as the Support Tribe & family celebrating every win and progression no matter how small… the fact of the matter is, he is not. His physical limitations are obvious, his cognitive function is impaired and his mental health is tenuous.
The costs of continued lifetime support & any sense of normality for Steve are massive.
We are so grateful for all of the donations so far and are aiming with this update to remain transparent on the reasons for our imminent fundraising push.
We have created a gofundme page for the Steve Lee Fight Back fundraiser and will be releasing additional information throughout the coming weeks and months.
Please stand with us as we continue to hope for the best, but prepare for the reality of Steve’s condition.
