Like something out of Alien, the otherworldly looking abalone is the target of Toba and Shima's Ama right now. The women (often in their 60's~70's) dive into the ocean with little more than a wetsuit, goggles, and a specially shaped chisel used to pry the abalone from rocks. Regulations are in place restricting the harvesting of abalone that haven't reached a mature size (anything under 10.6cm) and only allowing harvesting to take place from April~September (avoiding the abalone's spawning season). Abalone are sorted and prepared for distribution every afternoon at the local market (weather permitting).

Veteran Ama, Chizuko Nakamura, from Toba's coastal community Osatsu, dives to depths between 10~20 metres without the aid of scuba equipment. She descends rapidly by holding on to a weight and begins a race with the clock as she holds her breath for around 50 seconds. Searching the ocean for various shellfish to sell at the local market, Chizuko continues a traditional way of life for coastal Japanese women that dates back around 2000 years.
Weighted diving in deeper waters is referred to as "funado" diving and is becoming a rare sight because of the risk and physical toll it takes on the body. Many of the Ama continue to dive well into their 60's and 70's and some still get in the water in their 80's.
