Rokugatsu Do (Lantern Festival unique to Kagoshima)

This festival is held almost every evening in July (June in old calendar), at some of 60〜70 shrines in Kagoshima 🎆⛩
It is unique to Kagoshima, and we feel the summer has come while visiting this festival☀️⛱🏄‍♀️🍉

I invited two Africans, from Uganda and Sierra Leone. Tonight theme was Children's Day, celebrating children's growth on May 5. We enjoyed special food for this day while talking about differences of how to celebrate between Japan and African countries.

May 5th is a national holiday to celebrate the growth and health of all children, but originally this day was a boys’ day.
Families with boys display miniature samurai armor, helmets and dolls representing famous feudal generals and other heroes because they’d like their sons to grow as strong as warriors. Some families also fly carp-shaped streamers outside of their houses. Those streamers symbolize strength and success in life because Chinese legends say carp became dragons when they swam up whitewater rapids.

Uni-don festival
Akune, Kagoshima, is famous for Uni (sea urchin) as well as various marine products. Now is the high season for Uni and a lot of restaurants are cooperating to hold Uni-don festival and serve delicious dishes with the reasonable price.
