LET’S TRY THE DIVERSITY OF “WASHOKU”

-INTEGRATED THE LOCAL CUISINE IN ONE PLACE, YATAI MURA IN KAGOSHIMA-

WASHOKU stands for FOODS of JAPAN, which is in the list of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Feature is thought to be simple but complicated.
You might feel a bit weird if you eat the foods of Japan, because in Japan people eat raw fish as Sashimi or Sushi and taking much time to flavor ingredient. Plus, WASHOKU is very diverse which consists of the several types of foods like Sushi, Tempura etc, and each prefecture has own uniqueness, and even each prefecture has the diversity of cuisine.

As the past post shows, you can enjoy abundant fresh foods and types of cuisine there.
But what the problem is the difficulty of getting to eat them, because you have to search where the restaurant is and move for each of cuisine like Sushi shop for Sushi, Tempura shop for Tempura. Looks hard, right?

Don’t worry. In the city of Kagoshima, there is a spot where you can have the diversity of local cuisine and hang out. It is “YATAI MURA”, YATAI means “street stall” and MURA does “village or district”, so you can image that here is like “Integrated small bar & restaurant place serving especially Kagoshima Foods”. People come here to enjoy not only having food but hanging out and talking with new people. You may have chances to make good local friend here too.

TRY THE RAW CHICKEN, EAT AS SASHIMI

You might feel a little bit weird if you see people eat Japanese foods, because in Japan people eat raw fish as Sashimi or Sushi and taking much time to flavor the ingredient. When we eat chicken, we usually grill or cook it before we put it into mouth, we don’t eat raw one like raw fish. You probably think so, but Japanese people eat raw chicken too. In particular, Kagoshima and Miyazaki Southern Japan are famous place for that. These people love eating raw chicken in the similar style of Sashimi that they have sliced chicken with soy source. In personal view, unlikely to the fish, the chicken has the different food texture and more juiciness, though both are great.

THE DRINK MORE POPULAR THAN “SAKE” IN JAPAN

SAKE is a kind of Japanese alcoholic beverages, is made of rice and contains 18-20% alcohol by volume. Maybe you know it, because it is popular outside of Japan, is in the trend with WASHOKU which is Japanese foods.
But what the alcohol drink do you know Japanese people have more than SAKE in Japan? It is SHOCHU, which is very popular Japanese distilled beverage made of potato or rice or barley etc, and contains less than 45% alcohol by volume but over 25% basically.
You can enjoy the tremendous variety of tastes because over 5000 brands are in Japan. And you can discover the different faces in same Shochu because of the different ways to drink it. Plus, in the personal view it is great with Japanese meal.
Furthermore Shochu is said to be good for your health!!

Where can you enjoy?

YES, KAGOSHIMA in Southern Japan!! Kagoshima is the famous for producing Shochu and farming potato of the ingredient, and people here love it. In fact the most Shochu consumption prefecture in Japan is Kagoshima in 2013. You will see Shochu more than Beer here. Recommend you have it when you come to Kaogoshima!! Kind local resident will tell you how to enjoy it!!

400 YEARS OF HISTORY & TRADITION

-SATSUMA WARE, THE SOPHISTICATED ART-

The tableware or pottery etc have been gifts for people in upper class for long, even now some people collect ones to enjoy as art. In Japan Arita ware and Kutani ware etc are some of the most famous ones.
One of them got recognized and popular all around the world is SATSUMA WARE, which is a style of Japanese earthenware originally from Satsuma Province.
It is made of the clay and can be divided into two. The 1st one is Shiro/White-Satsuma ware, its feature is the fine craze and brilliant pictures on the ivory colored surface, mainly for the upper-class.
The other is Kuro/Black-Satsuma ware, is colored jet-black and its surface is simple without pics but glossy, basically for local residents.

In fact about 150 years ago, Satsuma province joined Paris’ International Exposition in 1867 to exhibit this arts especially White/Shiro-Satsuma ware, and then got recognized internationally. Now some of them displayed in noted museums like British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art etc. 400 years have passed since this craft came and has been taken over, you can feel it here in South-SATSUMA.

THE BIGGEST & HEAVIEST SHOES, 100 TIMES MORE THAN YOURS

-TRADITIONAL LOCAL FES IN OHRA AREA-

The new inscription of “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals in Japan” to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity might be hot topic. The other festivals all around Japan are held to pray to the gods about once a year as well 33 ones added to the list of UNESCO, each of them reflects the variety of the local culture. Such traditional events have been observed in South-SATSUMA Kagoshima Southern Japan too.

By the way what size is your shoe, 20 or 30cm? And how much does it weight, 200 or 300 g? Anyway the lighter might be the better these days.
BUT the shoe against the current is here in South-SATSMA, whose length is some 230cm and weight is some 30kg. Who do want this to be with? Where is the guy who is able to fit such a big one? Probably you doubt yet. If so, check the movie now!

Did you see the movie? This is a traditional local festival held in OHRA area of South-SATSUMA. Let me explain to you quickly, people who lived here around 800 years ago had an enemy trying to kill them. They needed to keep an enemy away from here OHRA for their peace, then thought of how to do it…
What they did is to show the extremely giant MAN lives with them as guardian. Then they started putting these huge shoes of the big MAN at the entrance of the village so that they cheat the enemy. After then the enemy get scared when they saw these shoes, and they have never come around this village since then.
After all, they come to bring shoes to the shrine for expressing the gratitude.

Shoes were not for the foot.

The several traditional and historical events are here, in South-SATSUMA southern Japan. Why don’t you put these in your travel plan?

WASHOKU is the word for JAPANESE FOOD, which is in the list of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Feature is thought to be simple but complicated, in fact Japanese people are peculiar about it, for example Umami comes from the Japanese for one of the five basic taste which is understood as savory taste or “Pleasant savory taste”.
A little bit weird you might feel if you eat the food of Japan, because people in Japan love eating raw fish and taking much time to flavor ingredient. You will see it when you live in Japan.

Kagoshima has the abundant gifts from the nature, is famous for the agriculture and farming and fishing under the great condition of the climate, ground etc.

ENJOY IN THE SHELTER BUILT BY YOURSELF, THEN FIRE IT!!

-TRADITIONAL FESTIVAL IN KINPO FOR THE NEW YEAR-

The new inscription of “Yama, Hoko, Yatai, float festivals in Japan” to UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity might be hot topic. The other festivals all around Japan are held to pray to the gods about once a year as well 33 ones added to the list of UNESCO, each of them reflects the variety of the local culture. Such traditional events are also held in South-SATSUMA Kagoshima Southern Japan.

How do you spend New Year? Visiting a shrine, or Making calls? Wherever it is in, reading & checking the fortune for coming year seems to be what people do all around the world.
A unique event is run here in South-SATSUMA to welcome the New Year. As movie attached to this post shows, people gather and build a shelter of bamboo, then start enjoying music or eating for the celebration of New Year, then FIRE that shelter, in the end cook rice cake over the
fire left the shelter.
Why people do this? Because people think that the devil/evil sprit approaches the fun of celebration for New Year, then will stay around people and village even after all. So people need to burn out the shelter to let devil stay away from them.

The several traditional and historical events are here, in South-SATSUMA southern Japan. Why don’t you put these in your travel plan?
