Yes, the shrine itself is not that large, and especially the Sakura season gives it all a different flavor, but just in itself I was totally surprised at the lion head's size (bigger than expected!) 😂

Japan has a new Prime Minister!
Sadly Taro Kono lost to Fumio Kishida.

Kono who stems from a family of politicians has an international and humanitarian background & even lists Durian as his favorite food (meaning he is actually a superior life form 👀)
In a country where most politicians are male, over 50, traditionalistic and often carry largely misogynistic views, Kono represents a real chance for a more modern, world-open and forward -thinking Japan.
I love this country to bits but the voting majority are old men over 50 who are still in love with the idea of a superior & traditionalistic Japan, where change is found utterly uncomfortable.
I'm disappointed that obviously Japan is still not ready to embrace a new way of being.
As a foreigner who has laid roots here and will also be here for a future in Japan, I wonder if I will see the day where the Japanese government will reflect what we, the younger generations & internationally-minded already know:
That Japan needs to catch up with the world in social matters 😮💨😮💨😮💨
We need and want a more open-minded Japan, because we love Japan 🗾 💜
Foreigners have no voting right here but we can support Kono and other forward-thinking politicians by following their Twitter accounts & amplifying their voices 🙂
To a better Japan, someday 🥂

I spent the afternoon in Ginza today on a quest to get my hands on the newly released Iphone 13 Pro Max Super Sayajin, to finally loose the handicap of creating with a limited and more often than not, frustratingly glitchy Android Instagram UI 🤪
This mission failed as those who watched my story will know, what didn't fail however is my omnipresent admiration for Tokyo's little treasures, one just needs to look.
Before my live stream, I was snapping away for about half an hour, blissfully soaking in the glass reflections, never ending lines of taxis and in general just doing my fav past time: people watching! 😅

Literally a parallel universe within Tokyo. Everything's noisy, the crowd is a mix of geeky and classy-clad penguin salary men. There are PC parts, gadgets and the newest in computer technology and there are s*x toys and Gachapon on the same street. In the next street are cutesie maids, dressed up in all sorts of cool cosplay, beckoning you into a kawaii little world of its own. There are dirty corners littered with trash, mice and cockroaches, houses literally falling apart and then there are those signature-Tokyo squeaky clean glass and steel buildings, reflecting the neon lights of this crazy little part of Tokyo.
I could never put into words how I felt about Akihabara, but I guess I really appreciate it for its boldness to be freaky in a largely uniform society.

Today I got my first Moderna shot.
This wouldn't be any big news if... it weren't for my NEEDLE PHOBIA 💀💀💀
A recent Oxford University survey of more than 15,000 adults in the UK suggests needle phobia accounts for about 10% of Covid vaccine hesitancy (BBC News)
And I totally understand it.
I'm one in ten people, statistically, that froze the moment they realized that our worst fear, a needle, will be our only way out of the grip of COVID-19.
If you think about it, it's actually quite the cruel joke 😅💀😵😭
Why am I sharing this very personal story with you?
Because
A) I really want to reach those that are just as frightened of needles as I am, caught in the "Covid vs phobia" dilemma and
B) simply to raise awareness that people like me exist
As for the shot, I made an insta story about my day today, feel free to check it out.
Briefly summed up:
I woke up and had my first panic attack in bed this morning, learned a breathing technique called "box breathing" on YouTube (breathe in, hold, breathe out, hold, repeat ♻️) to keep my anxiety at bay even if just a little (it worked a bit!) and when it was time to enter the vaxx booth I broke out in a cascading waterfall, incomprehensibly sobbing words of "yes, I'm ok to get my shot" (even though I didn't look like it lol) and then DID NOT even FEEL the shot ONE BIT.
*Almost* to my disappointment 😂
Honestly though, doc served the shot so well, she was done while I was still mentally preparing 🙈
So If you, too, are hellishly scared of needles, I feel you. I completely understand. It really is your decision to get the shot(s) or not. I can 100% understand just HOW MUCH of a daunting prospect it is to get through this, not only once but in most cases twice.
I'll sadly have to go back for a second shot & I will report again (😭) Probably lots of tears & anxiety again but at least now I know I will be surprised at how fast it goes and how little I will feel!

A while ago I have established a weekly ritual of buying myself flowers, to
a) remind myself of the little pleasures of life and
b) appreciate the seasonal changes (especially the seasons I normally dread, aka Winter 😅)
Yesterday i bought a branch of higanbana to go with my yellow lilly & added a branch of Eukalyptus tinto the mix, which I dry in my office (the fragrance of Eukalyptus is SO refreshing & crisp, it gives me a nice start to the day)! 🥰
Did you know that "O-higan" is what the Japanese call the day of the autumn equinox? It's a national holiday here and it generally marks that from September 23rd the dark of night will become longer than the day-light period.
In fact, "higan" translates to the "other shore" - basically "the land of the dead" 😅 "Higanbana" translates as the "flower of autumn equinox".
Therefore o-higan is the day to visit the family graves and pray for the well-being of the departed souls.
The higanbana (spider lily) pops up at exactly this time of year and their gorgeous bright crimson color will surely mesmerize you! ♥️

No, these are NOT knock-offs of our beloved Cup Noodles, they are a SUPER FUSIONS!!
Nissin released a super fusion series of it's most popular Cup Noodle flavors fused together and this is what it looks like 👁️👁️ 🍜
There are 4 flavors in total:
🍥 Siupoodle, made from "Shio" (salt and black pepper flavor) and the OG missing Cup Noodle
🍥 Searry, made from Seafood flavor and Curry flavor
🍥 Tonso, a fusion of tonkotsu (pork bone broth) and miso
🍥 and lastly, Cheechili Curmato (🤣 wtf) a hybrid of Chili Tomato Cup Noodle and my fav Cheese Curry Cup Noodle!! 😋🧀

Can you smell a that sweet fragrance in the air?
Every year anew I get surprised by a sudden delicious floral smell in the air! Some Japan expats may even have referred to it as "a smell of toilet deodorizer in the air" 😂
The smell will stop you in your tracks to ponder where it's coming from! It is a flower called Kinmokusei ♡ (Sweet Osmanthus) and a clear sign that Fall is just around the corner! 🎃🍁🍂
Have you smelled it yet? They just started blooming so keep your noses open everyone! 👃🏻💕

Built in 1975, the impressive lion head crowns a stage and is 12m tall x 11m wide! Much bigger than I expected 😅 I was thoroughly impressed.
It is without a doubt one of Japan's most distinctive places of worship 🙏🏻✨ (nicer pictures will follow!)

Hey friends! Happy first September!
I'm not ok with Summer being over, but today clearly feels like Fall 🥺🍁
Until about 12 pm I was refusing to put something on my thin summer top until a big sneezer made clear that the cold wasn't going anywhere 😏
So I reluctantly put on socks and a sweater.
Now I'm cozying up in my Taiyaki , trying to come to terms with the fact that Summer is over, the mysterious Pumpkin spice latte all my American friends rave about is hitting Japanese for the first time and the leaves of the momoji tree reflecting in this mizubachi (water basin) will be turning a beautiful fiery red soon.
I'll probably be posting a lot more summer stuff until the inevitable October comes around 😅

After thoroughly indulging in 's beautiful new Harry Potter world last month (photos & videos still to come!!), I took a trip down Diagon Alley at the Harry Potter theme cafe at cafe yesterday!
Having had a mixed bag of experiences with theme cafes so far (yucky food, terrible atmosphere, yay, another clearfile... but everything's expensive af!? Whyyy 🙈💸💸💸)
I kept my expectations *pretty* low...
..and got REWARDED! 🤩
Apart from the wonderful company of my lovely friends, the food was really good! I'm SHOOKETH! 😳 😂
The interior is bare bones but the food made up for it 🦉👌🏻
In preparation of tiny portions, I ordered both the Shepherds Pie AND the Herbology Class Salad. Both were delicious & very filling!
Just one would've been enough by itself 😂
Oh well. At least I had some variety 😅

One of the things that amused me the most in the beginning of life in Japan, was the widespread use of 日傘 "Higasa" (lit. sun umbrella), or "Sunbrella", as I call them 😁
I don't use them as I'd rather have two free hands 🙋🏻♀️☀️☀️☀️ But even though I find the idea of holding umbrellas, rain or shine, rather funny, they DO indeed cut the heat from direct sunlight very much! ☀️✂️ 😮

Here is what I can tell you:
Insta seems to be getting stricter with how many actions can be taken in a day/week/month!? There is however no official information on this 😐
I deleted about 50 bot accounts from my followers as there was a big influx lately. That however got me in Insta Jail aka I got logged out & asked to renew my password. Reasoning being that I was using "illegal third party apps" to "follow/unfollow", which I didn't. I have no such apps on my phone and never had 🤷🏻♀️
It was all hard manual labor to remove those bots 🙈 (looking at you Instagram 👀)
Problem was, renewing my password was not as easy as it sounds as I got caught in some technical glitch loop where I COULD NOT renew my password 🥺
All your reports really seem to have helped because my account got out of that glitch loop yesterday! 😭
I'm so grateful to every single one of you who sent a message to Instagram to support my case 🙏🏻💕

Today marks 76 years since the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima 🕊️
With every year the number of A-bomb survivors, called "hibakusha", dwindles, therefore it's on us, the younger generations, to keep the promise of doing our utmost for peaceful resolutions of conflicts 🙏🏻🤍
During the yearly ceremony which took place today, a list of 328,929 deceased hibakusha was placed inside a cenotaph, the bridge-like structure in this picture! The list included 4,800 people who passed away within this year.

A VIVID SPECTACLE: KŌCHI'S YOSAKOI FESTIVAL! 🎉
I was recently invited to the Premium Yosakoi festival to get my mind blown and feet dancing! 🥲💕
The Premium Yosakoi twas only a corona-safe taster of the real deal in Kōchi!
I took the live stream with me to experience this colorful event together and well, it really didn't disappoint 💘
🍋 Kochi is the heart of YUZU! YES! But also Yosakoi culture, where the yearly festival is a really big deal!
In non 🦠-times, around 200 teams (and approximately 20,000 dancers) make the region shake with genki-ness!
I was mind-blown to learn that ANYBODY around the 🌍 can start a yosakoi team if they just follow a simple set of rules:
1) include phrases from the original "Yosakoi Naruko Odori" (Yosakoi Dance)
2) move forward as you dance
3) hold Naruko clickers ✨
🏳️🌈 Another interesting fact was that Yosakoi actively promotes INCLUSIVITY!
Yosakoi welcomes people of all s*xual orientations, races, ages and physical abilities! 👩🦽👫👵🤱🏻
I was already a fan before, but now I'm sold for life! 🤩💕💕
🌍 So it's no wonder that the popularity of Yosakoi crosses borders, and as of March 2021 there are dance teams in 33 countries and regions! 🌎 🌍
👘 One of the things that makes the Yosakoi Festival such a vivid spectacle is that each team has wildly different costumes and choreography, bringing their own style to the performance!
🎶 The musical performance on this day ranged all the way from traditional to classic inspired to City Pop Yosakoi songs! 🥰 (My list is full of Yosakoi-love lol)
🧳 Once Corona is over and we can all travel again, make sure to put Kōchi's Yosakoi Festival on your list!

I simply love exploring my neighborhood in Tokyo's North! 🚲🕵🏻♀️
Ever since I started living here in 2015, I've always felt that anything that isn't downtown Tokyo (or cool west Tokyo, hello Kichijoji ✋) flies under everybody's radar & goes largely under-appreciated 😬 but Tokyo's "Sh*tamachi" (下町, former "residential zones" away from the palace and trading districts) is where I love to be most!
It's packed with tiny streets just waiting to be explored! small mom'n'pop shops, teeny Izakaya, lots of "snacks" (old-school bars) and funky colorful walls 😏💗
Would you be surprised to hear that both Asakusa and Yanaka are considered "Sh*tamachi"? ⛩️🏮

A VIVID SPECTACLE: KŌCHI'S YOSAKOI FESTIVAL! 🎉 I was recently invited to the Premium Yosakoi festival to get my mind blown and feet dancing! 🥲💕 The Premium Yosakoi twas only a corona-safe taster of the real deal in Kōchi! I took the live stream with me to experience this colorful event together and well, it really didn't disappoint 💘 🍋 Kochi is the heart of YUZU! YES! But also Yosakoi culture, where the yearly festival is a really big deal! In non 🦠-times, around 200 teams (and approximately 20,000 dancers) make the region shake with genki-ness! I was mind-blown to learn that ANYBODY around the 🌍 can start a yosakoi team if they just follow a simple set of rules: 1) include phrases from the original "Yosakoi Naruko Odori" (Yosakoi Dance) 2) move forward as you dance 3) hold Naruko clickers ✨ 🏳️🌈 Another interesting fact was that Yosakoi actively promotes INCLUSIVITY! Yosakoi welcomes people of all sexual orientations, races, ages and physical abilities! 👩🦽👫👵🤱🏻 I was already a fan before, but now I'm sold for life! 🤩💕💕 🌍 So it's no wonder that the popularity of Yosakoi crosses borders, and as of March 2021 there are dance teams in 33 countries and regions! 🌎 🌍 👘 One of the things that makes the Yosakoi Festival such a vivid spectacle is that each team has wildly different costumes and choreography, bringing their own style to the performance! 🎶 The musical performance on this day ranged all the way from traditional to classic inspired to City Pop Yosakoi songs! 🥰 (My @Spotify list is full of Yosakoi-love lol) 🧳 Once Corona is over and we can all travel again, make sure to put Kōchi's Yosakoi Festival on your list! FAQ What Languages are available? All tours are available in English and German. More languages are being added as our team is expanding. Are all of your Tours Gluten-Free / Vegan / Vegetarian? No, not all, but most of our tours can be offered as GF, Vegan or Vegetarian. I am Gluten-Free but my partner isn’t. Can we still book the tour together? Yes, absolutely! Inclusion goes both ways. Gluten-Free tours will generally follow a Gluten-Free food plan, however I allow myself and our guests a little flexibility here. It is about enjoying the food experience and not about strictly sticking to a set plan, therefore food items can be adjusted if alternatives are available. Please inform us in advance. How long is a tour? My Food Tours are 3-hour walking tours. Are your tours child- / family-friendly? Yes, my tours are family-friendly with family-friendly prices. What if it rains / snows? As long as the weather conditions pose no health risk, the tours take places as scheduled. However, me or my staff will always get in touch before the tour to give an update.
