Someone told me today that the men I attract are only interested in two things and neither one is my intelect or my personality.

It propelled me forward to do something I have been meaning to do for a loooong time and that was to write my own for

I mean I have nearly 15 years of working and in Japan so it’s about time I share it with the world.

I plan to my first and who knows… maybe I’ll get some traction and a will want to pick it up.

Looking forward to becoming a and maybe even do a series.

I think my will definitely be something totally different from what’s out there. Working as a I could experience up close what travelers struggle with and I think I have come up with a unique concept.

I can’t wait to see where this will lead! Hopefully something good! 🎉

In 1933, a tragic love story unfolded on Oshima Island, Japan. Kiyoko Matsumoto, a young girl heartbroken by forbidden love, threw herself into the fiery depths of Mt. Mihara, a volcano on the island.

Her story became legendary, inspiring a wave of romantic yet devastating pilgrimages to the volcano. Today, her memory reminds us of the power and pain of love. 🌋💔

😱😭Heartbreaking history: I spoke in my dialect!

This Ryukyuan child was forced to wear a sign reading ‘I spoke in dialect’ as punishment for speaking Okinawan. It’s a reminder of how native languages in Okinawa were suppressed in favor of Japanese. Let’s not forget this piece of history.

Two words meaning "autumn colored foliage" are koyo and momiji, both written with the same two characters, 紅葉.

Koyo refers to the phenomenon of changing autumn colors. It mainly concerns the colors of the foliage of deciduous trees with broad leaves, even before they fall to the ground. 🐾🍂

At some point, the word momiji has become synonymous with the maple (kaede), the most beautiful of the autumn trees.

The koyo season in Japan usually starts in mid-September in the north in Hokkaido and gradually spreads to the southern end of the Japanese archipelago over about 50 days. 🗾⬇️

So, is autumn a season when you would like to visit Japan? ☺️

Today, I had the pleasure of giving my group their first taste of Tokyo! 🇯🇵 We started the day with a peaceful visit to Meiji Shrine, taking in the serenity of this beautiful cultural site. From there, we dove into the vibrant streets of Harajuku, exploring its quirky shops and unique fashion. We then strolled down the stylish avenues of Omotesando, admiring the chic architecture and boutiques. Finally, we wrapped up the day in the iconic Shibuya, where everyone got to experience the famous scramble crossing! 🗼✨ What a day to kick off their Tokyo adventure!

How is YOUR experience with Japanese service? Leave your opinion in the comments! ❤️

Japanese service is truly unmatched! From the attention to detail to the kindness and respect you experience at every turn, it’s more than just service—it’s a whole experience. Whether you’re in a restaurant, hotel, or store, the hospitality (or omotenashi) makes you feel so valued. Every small gesture, from the warm greetings to the perfectly wrapped gifts, shows just how much pride they take in their work. It’s on another level! Once you’ve experienced it, nothing else compares.

Have you heard about Japan’s “window sitters” (マドギワ族)? 🪟 These employees are sidelined into meaningless roles, pressured to quit in toxic environments. It’s harsh and isolating, raising questions about workplace ethics and leadership.

Here are 10 common mistakes people make when traveling to Japan:

1. Tipping – Tipping isn’t customary in Japan and can even be considered rude. Many travelers may unintentionally offend.
2. Not carrying cash – Japan is still a cash-based society, especially in rural areas, so relying solely on credit cards can cause problems.
3. Talking loudly on public transport – It’s impolite to speak loudly or have phone conversations on trains and buses. Quiet is the norm.
4. Ignoring cultural etiquette – Simple customs like bowing, removing shoes when entering homes, or handling chopsticks incorrectly can be seen as disrespectful.
5. Underestimating jet lag – Japan is far from many places, and the time difference can be significant. Give yourself time to adjust.
6. Not learning basic Japanese phrases – English isn’t widely spoken in many parts of Japan. Simple phrases like “thank you” and “excuse me” go a long way.
7. Overpacking for travel – Japan’s trains and buses are crowded, with limited luggage space. Overpacking can make travel cumbersome.
8. Misunderstanding train etiquette – There are unspoken rules like staying quiet, lining up at platform doors, and avoiding eating onboard.
9. Expecting Western-style bathrooms everywhere – Some areas still have traditional squat toilets, which can surprise unprepared travelers.
10. Not respecting personal space – Japan values personal space, even in crowded cities. Pushing or standing too close to others is frowned upon.

Avoiding these mistakes will ensure a smoother, more enjoyable trip to Japan!

🎉 Woohoo, after last years’ success, Tokiotours is again being nominated for the APAC Business Award. In addition we are nominated for the Luxury Travel Award!

With currently over 350 five ⭐ reviews on our Google Business Page, it warms my heart to keep receiving these accolades from Industry Leaders.

When I started Tokiotours back in 2013 as a sole tour guide, I could have never imagined that we would grow out to become a force to be reckoned with. Of course I could never be where I am today, without the wonderful support of the entire Tokiotours’ team and my amazing business partner who has been a life saver since 2018.

Our Story

Hello, Welcome to the page of Tokiotours. My name is Nicki Yoshihara and I am the founder and owner of Tokiotours. We have been showing people around various places in Japan since 2013 so we have a lot of experience in providing the best possible experience in Japan.

Since I am originally Dutch, we have a lot of Dutch speaking guides working for us in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and various other locations around Japan. All our guides are local people who have had extensive training in how to be the guide you need. We specialize in bespoke private tours. All our guides do their utmost to enhance your experience and to adjust every tour we do to the clients needs. That way our tours are never boring and always EXACTLY what you want them to be. On our website www.tokiotours.com we have a lot of suggestions on things you can do in and around Tokyo, Kyoto, Mt Fuji and various other locations, but in reality every tour we do is custom made and extra special. Why? Because we do our best to adjust the tour to only show you the things you are interested in. To only give you those back ground stories you want to know. To only take you to your favorite restaurants. To help you before your tour with picking out the best restaurant. To give you lots of tips and suggestions to make your stay in Japan everything you dreamed about. To make sure that even on the days you didn’t book a tour with us, you will still have a great time and are able to explore on your own with all the suggestions we gave you. The unmissable info that you can’t find in any guide books. The secret treasures only a local knows.

All our guides are also fluent in Japanese and English and have extensive knowledge of Japanese culture, cuisine, modern pop culture, religion and all our guides have their own expertise. For instance Japanese literature, photography, kimono’s, architecture and more. That’s what makes Tokiotours so exciting. All our guides have their own back ground and bring something else to your tour.

When you book a tour with us we always try to match the right guide to the right clients to make your visit even more enjoyable.
