The parade starts every night around 6 as it starts to cool down outside, and lasts 3 hours each day. Since Sansa lasts a total of four days, almost everyone who lives in Morioka gets a chance to enjoy the festival at some point or another! Store fronts and spaces around the city are filled with stalls to buy food and drink while you enjoy the festivities!
This year’s Sansa was so fun that it was over before we knew it but, we hope to see you again next year!!!

Where else can you find elementary school children riding Horses through a city center? The
Chagu Chagu Umakko is one of the many local hidden gem festivals in Japan. On the second Saturday in June every year, this horse festival is held in Takizawa and Morioka cities. This year was the first year it was held in three years due to the pandemic and on the 11th of June, people came to see the parade of children riding decoration clad horses in the summer heat on their long trek.
This year, the 15 kilometer trek by about 60 horses took over 4 hours, and ran from Takizawa, all the way to Hachimangu shrine in the center of Morioka. Food stalls were set up there and at Sakurayama shrine along the way to feed the many who came out this year to see the horses’ journey.
The origins of the festival are rooted in the Iwate people’s love of horses. In the past people started to pray at the Sozen and Komagata shrines to heal horses who were used in farming and pray for their well being. The type of bright and vibrant costumes that can been seen in the Chagu Chagu Umakko festival were originally used by horses who carried goods to the Shogunate in Edo, and the bells ringing on them were used to ward off bears in the area from coming near.
