Back with the Pokémon Manhole Cover series, here we have Kunohe😁!

This design is based off of Odode-sama, a mythical half owl-half human being who was said to be able to predict fortune, weather and illness and speak the human language💁‍♂️🦉.💁‍♂️🦉.
The people in this area often pay respect to Odode-sama at one of the many waterfalls in the mountainous region, not dissimilar to the manhole cover you see above🛣.

Many horses parading around the city streets in fancy dress and ringing hundreds of bells as they go? That’s pretty much summarizes one of Iwate’s well known traditional festivals, Chagu Chagu Umakko. Each horse is ridden by a young child and walked by friends and family. This rare sight can be seen every year on the second Saturday of June, starting from Takizawa and trotting around 14km to end in Morioka.

Iwate was known as a horse breeding prefecture back in the day, and revered horses to the point where man and horse shared the same living space. This festival began as a way to pray for the health and longevity of the horses in the area.

We’d love to see you all come next year to enjoy this rare sight with us!

Known as one of The Three Great Noodles of Morioka, Morioka jajamen is a local delicacy in the Morioka region. If you’ve been here once before, you might have seen specialist shops selling it. But what is it exactly?

Jajamen is a flat, thin, udon-like noodle topped with cucumbers, spring onions and meat miso. Meat miso is the unique sauce for this dish, made up of ground meat, miso and a range of condiments and flavorings to give it its unique umami taste. Once the meat miso is mixed into the noodles, other condiments such as vinegar, ginger, garlic and chili oil can be added. Mix and enjoy!
..but that’s not the end!

For the ultimate experience, leave a little bit of the noodle-miso mix for something called chiitan! For a small extra price, you can turn your dry noodle dish into a hearty soup to wrap up your meal. An egg, boiling water and extra miso is added to create chiitan. It might not look glamorous but the flavor is definitely as exquisite as it sounds!

Come to Morioka to try this local delicacy when you can!

The Wind Phone was set up as a place for those who lost loved ones during the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami disaster that wreaked havoc on the prefecture on March 11, 2011. Situated in the back garden of the creator’s home, many have since come to make phone calls to the afterlife, formulating and maintaining relationships to strengthen bonds that traverse time and space. The phone booth also has a notepad, where visitors often leave messages to their loved ones, or messages of encouragement to future visitors. As visitors are often left in an emotional state, the pristine location, right near the coast, creates a peaceful atmosphere that allows visitors to spend as much time as they need before setting off back to their regular lives.

The phone can be found in the town of Otsuchi, and is best accessed by either car or via the nearest train station on the Sanriku Railway.

Deep in the mountains, on the border of Iwate and Akita Prefecture, lies an unsuspecting swamp. For only two months of the year does it show its prowess, attracting visitors from all over the globe to its vicinity for a once in a lifetime view.

The Hachimantai Dragon Eye is as its name suggests, the winter snow and ice melts in a particular manner that resembles a mystical beast’s eye. Although it looks stunning in the sun, the true beauty is during light snow or fog, the weather adding to the mystery of the phenomenon.

You should be able to see the dragon eye in May so if you’re in Iwate, Akita or even Tohoku around then, consider coming here to see the marvel with your own eyes!

Within a park in the suburbs of Morioka, 21 Buddhist statues from the late Edo period survive to this day. Initially built between 1837 and 1849 and erected in Soryuji Temple as a memorial to those who perished from the four great famines of then Morioka Domain, a great fire in 1884 burnt down the temple with only the statues having survived.
The 21 statues consist of 16 rakan (arhat disciples of Buddha who attained nirvana) and 5 nyorai (the 5 Great Buddhas). Each of the statues is about three meters tall. There are benches in the area for you to sit and have some solace from the hustle and bustle of life in the city.

Wagyu. World famous brand of beef. But did you know that wagyu can be further categorized down to the breed and location?

Iwate has a couple of different brands of wagyu, but Maesawa beef (or maesawa-gyu) is the cream of the crop. Bred in the Maesawa district of Oshu City in Iwate and characterized by its delicate marbling and distinct buttery aroma when cooked, this wagyu can be enjoyed not only on its own, but with a wide variety of seasonings and sauces. Our recommended way of eating Maesawa beef is lightly grilling thin (yet generous) slices so you can enjoy all the flavor combinations in one sitting!

Come and try out our wonderful Maesawa wagyu at any of our barbeque and steak restaurants!

Have you ever thought about what it’s like to ride a small motor boat into a hidden cave along the Sanriku Coast? No? Fair enough. But let us give you a sneak peek into what you’re missing out on.

Jodogahama Beach envelops visitors in an air of purity, just like its Japanese name suggests. Visitors have the chance to walk along the rocky shores of the beach, enjoy feeding the local seagulls, indulge in the local specialties like bindon and delicious condiments, be entertained on a selection of cruises, and more! We’ve introduced the Uminekomaru cruise before, but the 20 minute Sappa boat ride gives you the chance to get real close to the water, the birds and the wonderful rock formations formed by volcanic activity many millions of years ago. If you’re lucky, the enthusiastic captain will give you a detailed explanation of the area and the lovely history behind it all!

If you’re interested in this sort of thing, come and breathe in the fresh Sanriku air and enjoy a little slice of Iwate life with us!

Also, UK’s The Times listed the Michinoku Coastal Trail (which includes Jodogahama) in one of their recent Japan travel recommendation guides, so be sure to check that out too!

The famous Miyako Bindon finally makes an appearance! Last Friday on March 22nd, bindon (seafood inside a milk bottle) was available to try within the cafeteria inside the Iwate Prefectural Office building. Bindon is a local specialty from Miyako City in Iwate, and features fresh seafood harvested from fishing grounds of the Sanriku Coast of northeastern Japan, placed inside a milk bottle to be poured upon a bowl of rice later.
Pictured here are Amanda from America and Ms. Wang from China, both currently working in the Iwate Prefectural Office. They had the chance to try bindon at the cafeteria. Bindon is available in 9 stores throughout Miyako City. Different varieties of seafood in season are available for you to try, including sea urchin, abalone, and salmon. We hope you can come taste this local delight and experience Miyako for yourself!

Last December, the Ishiwarizakura (a sakura tree growing out of a crack from a granite boulder in front of the Morioka Courthouse) had its yearly winter support prep done to protect its branches from snow and keep the trunk warm throughout the cold. With the advent of spring upon the city, the trunk wrapping and branch support poles were removed earlier this week on Monday. TV crews and news reporters were onsite to cover the occasion.
Pictured here are workers slowly taking down all of the poles. The large main pole in the center required assistance from a crane. The workers also proceeded to trim some of the branches and clean off the tree with a dust blower. Here in Morioka, the Ishiwarizakura is considered a natural monument and symbol. The respect and care given to this cherry blossom tree is a testament to its importance to the people of Morioka.

Sustainably raised here in Iwate Prefecture, Iwate wagyu is highly praised by top chefs throughout Japan and recently has started to become recognized internationally. Iwate wagyu have won more top prizes at the National Grading Competition in Japan than any other breed of Japanese cattle. Amongst the breeds of Iwate wagyu available, Maesawa wagyu from Oshu City is especially noted for its top quality.
In Oshu City of Iwate Prefecture, a cattle museum was established to honor Iwate wagyu, as well as the importance of cattle in human history. The first floor of the museum consists of exhibits like the cattle farming process in Iwate, details on the breed of Iwate cattle, as well as descriptions of cuts of beef.
The second floor of the museum goes over the importance and roles of cattle throughout human history. Displays on how the domestication and farming process have changed throughout the years, as well as all of the different breeds of cattle from around the world are available for you to see.
We hope Iwate wagyu continues to become more recognized throughout the world! Have a visit to the cattle museum if you’re ever in the Oshu area!

In the depths of Esashi Ward in Oshu City lies a place reminiscent of the Heian Period from more than 1000 years ago. A historical park with a mish mash of period accurate recreations, one can lose themselves at Esashi Fujiwara no Sato Historical Theme Park for hours. Children and adults alike can indulge in the sights and partake in activities such as archery and dressing up in period clothing and armor.

In today’s post, we’ll be shining the spotlight on the trick art museum. Putting a Heian spin on the trend, visitors are encouraged to use a combination of AR technology and their physical strength to create masterpieces to commemorate their visit. The museum holds photo contests regularly, rewarding the most creative or amusing photos with a range of prizes.

If you’re in the area, take a detour over to Esashi Fujiwara no Sato and experience not only the trick art museum but everything the historical park has to offer!

March 3rd marks the day of Hinamatsuri, a traditional festival in Japan. The festival celebrates the growth and happiness of young girls.

During the festival, many dolls representing Heian period figures are put on display, the most elaborate of which are featured on a multi-tiered platform. Normally, the top tier consists of the male obina doll and female mebina doll. Below are court ladies, musicians, and other attendants. Together they are called a hinakazari.

The photos shown in this particular post were taken at a historical manor in Morioka called the Nanshoso. It was first built in 1885 during the Meiji era and has since become a cultural heritage open to the public.

Morioka Hachimangu is Iwate’s largest shrine and hosts many festivals throughout the year. It is especially busy during hatsumode on New Year’s Day.

The shrine was first built in 1680 by Shigenobu Nanbu, a feudal lord who was the 29th head of the Nanbu clan of Morioka. Over the years, the shrine has been repeatedly rebuilt and repaired from damage after disasters such as the Morioka fire of 1884. The most current incarnation was rebuilt in 1997.

Pictured above are the gate leading to the shrine, a view from the top of the stairs, as well as a closer look at the shrine.

Today marks the Coming of Age Day of 2024! We hope everyone has had a good new year so far.

On New Year’s Day in Japan, many people visit a shrine to pray for good fortune and success in a tradition called Hatsumōde. Pictured here is Sakurayama Shrine in Morioka.

Fairly soon after the new year on the second Monday of the month is the Coming of Age Day. A ceremony is held for anyone who has reached or will reach adulthood (the age of 18 or 20 depending on the local government) during the current fiscal year. For anyone reaching adulthood this year, we pray for your future success!

In Kuji, the locals eat a nice warm soup called mamebu, which is a traditional soup dish that celebrates savory and sweet. Using many local winter vegetables, this soy sauce base soup contains many ingredients such as carrots and burdock root, tofu and sweet dumplings filled with chestnuts and brown sugar.

If you like miso soup or tonjiru, this is probably the dish for you! You can either travel to Kuji and try it fresh, or get an instant meal kit delivered to your door. If you get the chance, come and try this dish and enjoy the secrets of Kuji cuisine!

To those who may have been waiting: apologies for the wait! We are back with another post on Iwate sake!

Did you know the Presidents and Prime Ministers at the G7 Summit in Hiroshima started their banquet with Iwate sake?

Nambu Bijin is made up in the northern region of Iwate in Ninohe City, its cool climate and natural surrounds contributing to its crisp yet mellow taste. Mainly using a home grown brand of rice called Ginotome, Nanbu Bijin has been creating a variety of Japanese sakes, from the basic junmai to the nigorizakes and even has branched out to gins and whiskeys, all in the name of expansion. In valuing the home brand production process, Nambu Bijin has gained international recognition, and is sold and served in shops and restaurants across 59 countries all over the world.

The sparkling sake they had is AWASAKE, an internationally recognized, award winning sparkling sake made similarly to champagne but with the characteristic sake flavor profile.

Get a taste of what Iwate has to offer from either the comfort of your own home or in Japan!

Author of “Night on the Galactic Railroad” and “The Restaurant of Many Orders”, Miyazawa Kenji certainly left a mark in Iwate and Japanese history. Writing children short stories, many of his works take the reader to another world, clinging to the readers’ hearts and imparting life lessons. With a large chunk of his works based on locations within Iwate, local municipals have taken advantage of this to create tourist spots for fans to immerse themselves in his dream world. Just look at the first photo! Step into story after story and let your inner child run free!

Fun fact: If you speak to an Iwate local, most of them will be able to recite parts of Kenji’s stories off by heart! Try it when you can 

Fun fact 2: Today is the 90th anniversary of his death. His hometown of Hanamaki holds the Kenji Festival every year, so if you’re around, why not go to the Kenji Monument and take a peek at the festivities?

Did you know Morioka City and Iwate Prefecture are working together to create fun and interesting events for tourists?

Asabiraki, a local sake brewery with a strong history in making award-winning masterpieces is offering an exclusive tour of their facilities, with premium food and sake tasting. A quick tour of the factory by a local guide provides perspective on how many bottles of sake the company can produce. Despite the ability to mass produce, the master brewer still honors traditional handmade techniques to craft the ultimate sake. It’s a fascinating balancing act!

Tasting depends on what is available that day, but I tried the wagyu beef, Morioka black bean tofu and fish carpaccio paired with an exclusive competition only sake. The sweet yet dry accents of the sake beautifully complement the bold savory flavors of the dishes served. In the end, I got to taste a total of five premium sakes and wines and became a proud owner of that wooden square masu cup!

All in all, for a quick hour sake tasting experience, this one delivers strong! *pun absolutely intended*

Tours are held on every weekend and public holiday until the end of October!*
If you’re interested, please search for Iwate Treasure Hunt and book today!
*Excluding the October 7-8

The days this summer in Japan are still scorching hot, but the nights in places further north like Iwate are still relatively cool and that makes it a great time to go out stargazing! With little light pollution and tons of nature, Iwate has many locations where you can go look up at the sky and maybe even see a shooting star or too. The two locations pictured are the Sannoiwa Rocks by Miyako City and Shinyama Kogen which is about a 45 minute ride from Otsuchi Town. Stars are always in the sky, and are a part of our daily lives whether we remember to look up and see them or not, so there is something special about looking up and seeing all those stars that you normally can’t in the big city. We hope you take the time to get out of the big city and enjoy them wherever you are in the last days of August!

Obon in Japan just happened last week, and Morioka like many places around Japan has a special way to console and remember the dead. Every year around this time, boats built various by neighborhood communities get sent down the Kitakami River set ablaze with pictures and items to remember the deceased. This year it happened on Wednesday August 16th starting from 4pm with people wading waist deep to tend to the boats. There are all sorts of things that happen around Japan during the week or so surrounding Obon. Do you have any event you like to attend during this time of year?

08/08/2023

Up until now, the Sukawa Climbing Trail has had restricted access from Taikadai to Tengutaira due to high concentrations of volcanic gas (hydrogen sulfide) near the Showa Lake area, which posed significant danger.
However, the restricted area has been reduced due to lower concentrations of volcanic gas being confirmed. From July 28th to October 12th, 2023, the restricted area is reduced from 'Taikadai to Tengutaira' to 'Showako to Tengutaira' (please note, reaching the summit is still not permitted). Please refer to the attached file for more details.
After October 13th, 2023, access from 'Taikadai to Tengutaira' will once again be restricted due to the inability to monitor volcanic gas concentrations. The access restrictions for 2024 will be decided based on the results of the observations of volcanic gas concentrations and the melting snow at that time.
The Ubunuma course remains accessible to the summit as usual.

Have you heard it? Every evening in July, coming from the parks, coming from schools, coming from people’s houses… The sound of Sansa Odori

In neighborhoods all around Morioka you can hear the beating of Taiko drums as everyone practices and prepares for Iwate’s biggest festival of the year: Sansa Odori.
Sansa Odori holds the Guinness world record for being the biggest taiko drum festival in the world, and every year more than a million people come to visit the festival on one for its four days. There are three standard dances each participating group can choose from, and each dance has a drum, flute and dance section, so it is easy for new people to participate as well!

This will be the first Sansa Odori done without any restrictions since the corona virus, and with the New York times article list Morioka 2nd on its places to go ranking, we are expecting a huge turnout this year!

Incidentally, Sansa happens to fall within the same week as many of the other famous festivals in Miyagi, Aomori and Akita, so if you time everything right, you can spend a day in each Prefecture and enjoy them all in one go!

In Iwate, Japanese fishers are out on the Sanriku Coast every day doing what they do best, and this time of the year that is catching summer fish like sea bream, Giant Scallop and in this photo specifically, SEA URCHIN!! (or “Uni” as it is called in Japan). Sea urchin season starts from June and runs to the beginning of August, and wouldn’t you know it Iwate is the largest producer of sea urchin on Japan’s main island!

If you aren’t very familiar with Japanese seafood cuisine, you might not know about sea urchin, but it is considered a delicacy and is usually quite expensive. Luckily some markets and restaurants on Iwate’s coast in places like Kuji and Hirono offer it for a pretty reasonable price when it is still in season like right now!

The season will be over in a week or two, so this is a last call to get it while it is still fresh! It’s a food that people tend to either love or hate, but what do you think? Have you had any this year?
