Yonner's cooking class begins with a tour of Makishi Markets, a maze of family owned stalls with exotic ingredients like pig’s ears and 200 day fermented and smoked Skipjack Tuna fillets, the red lanterns calling you like an Aladdin’s cave of magic ingredients. After all, we are here to discover the secrets to long life, right? As a key port on the maritime silk route, the Ryukyu people have hand selected spices and produce from Persia to Peru, such was the extent of influences in their cooking repertoire.

Since the Fifteenth Century, merchants and ambassadors have made their way to the shores of the Ryukyu Islands, lured by the magic potion for longevity.

Okinawa has sustainability in its soul. Its shrines are a monument to nature, unadorned like Sefa Utaki. When you slow down and hear the waves or hear your shoes crackle on the sound of coral stone, you are communing with the soul of nature.

The future of travel, is the democratisation of travel. One that regardless of ability, one can enjoy life to the full.

My favorite beach that I've visited in Japan thus far is Okuma, in Okinawa Prefecture. The beach is situated on the northern coast of the island, away from the hustle and bustle of Naha City. The water at the beach is crystal clear and the crowds are minimal. There are also some great hikes around the area which give spectacular views of the region.

Okinawa's Northern Coast has some spectacular beaches, and Okuma is one of the best. Crystal clear water, minimal crowds, and great views are part of the appeal.

During the Ryukyu era (1429-1879), Okinawa's subtropical climate gave rise to its own island culture, regional cuisine, and a unique brand of liquor known as awamori. Exclusively produced in Okinawa’s Shuri district under strict control, both the creation process and supply routes were fiercely protected. The warriors hired to protect the secrets of Awamori were widely revered. This was the origin of karate.
