September is punctuated by the vibrant red of Spider Lilies.
These beautiful plants go by the name "Higanbana" ( 彼岸花), which translates to "Flower of Higan" - a reference to a Buddhist holiday celebrated around the autumnal equinox. Another beloved Japanese moniker for this flower is "manjushage" (曼珠沙華), inspired by a mythical blossom mentioned in the Chinese translation of the Lotus Sutra.
These vibrant flowers are known by more than 50 regional names across Japan, a testament to their widespread presence.
Introduced to Japan from China around 700 A.D., Lycoris radiata has evolved into a powerful cultural symbol, signifying the advent of autumn. Along Japanese roadways and adorning the boundaries of rice fields and homes, you'll frequently encounter the striking beauty of the red spider lily.
Notably, these lilies are strategically planted near rice fields to ward off unwelcome guests such as mice, thanks to the belief that the plant's poisonous bulbs act as a natural deterrent.
These photos were taken in Asuka-mura, a beautiful village not far from Kashihara City. They have a festival in the middle of September in part to enjoy these amazing flowers.
