【Living together under one roof】

The farming experience was a one-week experience. Farm work usually began at 8:30 in the morning, finishing around 12:00 and returning to the house.

We had lunch at the house and then had free time. Those who wanted to help out farmers more could go out to the farming sites. Those who wanted to do their own work could work. Those who wanted to hang out could hang out. Completely free. And then dinner. Then bed. That was the basic schedule.

The house we were staying is renovated into the public accommodation from a private house that will likely become abandoned and demolished in the near future.
Now air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a bathroom, a laundry dryer, a wide-screen TV, cooking utensils and ingredients provided. So the old house was transformed into an incredibly comfortable house.

As for meals, side dishes were provided by the people who runs a restaurant in the area where we were helping out the farmers. Cooked food was brought to us in airtight containers once every three days (menus were posted on the fridge). We can heat it up in the microwave, cook rice with an electric rice cooker, or whatever you like.

As for ways to spend your time outside of farm work, for example..., taking a walk around the neighborhood, seeing how the crops are sold at the vegetable market, going to a public bath or hot spring, or going to a local sake shop.

After farm work or after having a fun until evening, it would be pretty tired for us to cook a meal. Thanks to the meal support, we were able to continue working for the farmers without any difficulty.

Thanks so much to the people who produced this experience, the farmers who taught us how to farm, the people who supported our food, and the local people who welcomed us so warmly.
Thank you so much for everything.

【Farm work experience, Kinokawa City, Wakayama Pre.】

There is an experience in Kinokawa City where you can experience helping farmers with their work. I will introduce you the farmers and the people who participated in this experience.
The people who participated in the experience program have different jobs, lifestyles and generation, Just having the keyword "helping farmers".

What we learned from the experience was that each farmer puts in a lot of effort every day to find out how they can make the vegetable or fruits taste better and better.

Furrowing in the fields.
Harvesting mandarins and shaping them for sale.
Collecting and disposing of pruned peach tree branches.
Harvesting and sorting lemons.
Planting cucumber nursery plants.
You can see for yourself how food is produced and how it is delivered to consumers.

Each farm work is just doing the same thing over and over again. and It's simple work, but very hard work.
It gets boring. You feel a pain on your body because of being in the same position.
And yet everyone has such a nice smile. It's a lot of fun talking to them. And everyone is so kind to us amateur farmers, and they give us careful guidance.

I like the saying from the farmers, "Agriculture is always about smiling, that's why we can keep going." Perhaps this is something only someone who works in a job that brings you face to face with nature can say?

【Iwade City, Wakayama Pre.】

Today, I'm going to a place where I can enjoy wine in a casual atmosphere while still feeling like an outsider. Of course, there are "izakayas" (a Japanese-style pub) all over Wakayama. But the place I'd like to introduce you is a liquor store.

You can drink standing up at a liquor store. But you know, there are tons of liquor stores like that these days, aren't there?. But this place is a little "unique and special".

Because it's a liquor store, they have all kinds of alcohol. In addition to sake, they also have shochu (distilled spirit), wine, and even whiskey. You can also buy reasonably priced alcohol that makes a good souvenir.

And what's unique is that they sell shochu by weight. You can drink as much shochu as you want from this jar (photo). You should bring your own container.

They also sell sake lees by weight. I thought a young woman was making some kind of white art piece in the back of the store, and she said...
"It's sake lees. We'll sell you as much as you need."
I see. It's possible to get sake lees by weight, but I'm more interested in what kind of art work the white tower will be transformed into. (Unfortunately, there are no photos.)

Now, if you go to the back of the shop, you'll find there is a standing bar. You can drink small amounts of sake, called sake tasting. The price varies depending on the sake, but on average it's about 220 yen per glass. Of course, it comes with snacks (it's okay to have it without snacks). The oden is served in a clay pot and is 100 yen for each. Doesn't matter whatever you pick up, egg, radish, konjac, or fried tofu, each one is 100 yen. By the way, not all oden at Family Mart is 100 yen.

Choose an oden and a sake tasting at random, then go to the back. It looks like we'll be chatting away, tasting a lot of sake, and eating a lot of oden here. Definetly you will have a good conversation with locals, helped by a little tipsy mood.

【Kinokawa City, Wakayama Prefecture Report 3】

Today I'll introduce some delicious things from Kinokawa City.

First I went to the Farmer's Market named "Funooka". The vegetables sold there are nothing particularly unusual, like the usual direct sales shops in the production area, but when I look at each vegetable here I am quite surprised!
The spinach looks fresh, as if it has been just picked from a vegetable field. even though I am not a farmer, I can tell it is fresh. There are two or so extra-large spinach with sturdy stems and lots of green leaves in the same plastic bag. It only costs about 150 yen! Wow, it is such a beautiful bunch of spinach.

The same goes for the komatsuna (a vegetable similar to spinach). There are two or three large pieces of komatsuna with thick, strong stems in the same bag, and this also costs about 150 yen.
My favorite broccolis are a deep lush green, and come in various sizes in one bag, and the cost of it is less than 200 yen each! One whole cabbage (which was quite large) is only about 200 yen! There are so many big, beautiful vegetables that I wish I had brought a shopping bag.

But it's not just vegetables. The fruits have beautiful color. Citrus fruits are prominent because they are in the season. So now they are delicious. I almost feel sorry for the supermarkets in Osaka.
I regret that I didn't take any photos of these amazing vegetables and fruits, so I can't tell how amazing they are.

Next to the vegetable section is a unique restaurant. They have only two types of lunch menu, but both are full of vegetables. One is a Greek style like lunch, and the other is a spicy curry and rice.
The menu is hand-writing and clipped on the board. It looks stylish to me.
Japanese-style meals are good, but if you miss the Western style food, why don't you give a try to enjoy slightly Westernized creative Japanese cuisine here?

【Kinokawa City, Wakayama Pre., Report 2】
I went to Shunrinken. This is the home, clinic, and medical school of Hanaoka Seishu, the world's first inventor of general anesthesia. I didn't have high expectations at first, but it turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable.

To tell you a little about Hanaoka Seishu, he was born in Kinokawa City in 1760 (The Edo Period). He developed the general anesthetic named "Tsūsensan" by mixing medicinal herbs such as angel trumpet (Mandarage, Korean morning glory).
In 1804, he successfully performed breast cancer surgery using general anesthesia. At the same time, it was the first successful case in the world.

I toured Shunrinken with a guide, and was surprised to see that a structure almost identical to the modern hospital system already existed 200 years ago. There was an operating room, a room to care for patients who had just had surgery, patients moved from room to room as their condition improved, and finally they were discharged. There was a pharmacy where medicines were compounded, and a room where he lectured medical students.

What's surprising is the structure of the toilet. It's incredibly well thought out. It's a sedimentation type sewage septic tank toilet.
First, waste drops into a hole. If the waste is left for a while, it separates into clear water and sediment. Only the clear water is taken and left for some more time to create an even clearer water. This clear water is then poured down the drain into the river. The sediment is used as fertilizer.
It's a system that processes waste without polluting the river.

All of the surgical tools were made by craftsmen of the time. On display are surgical tools that are exactly the same as those used in hospitals today.
You'll be amazed at how elaborate the tools are and how dexterous craftsmen are.

Seishu's family all came together to support his medical works. One story that is often told is that of Seishu's wife. She became a test subject for the development of general anesthesia, and eventually became blind.
Furthermore, Seishu's older sister supported the family through weaving, but she died of breast cancer before Seishu developed Tsusensan.

He later became a physician to the Tokugawa family, but he never entered Edo Castle and never moved from Shunrinken.
He probably did not want to forget the people around him at Shunrinken.

As I toured around the rooms, thinking that Shunrinken was recreating many sorrows, joys and lessons learned in the present day, and I was suddenly reminded of Minakata Jin.

Note) Minakata Jin.
A character of a graphic novel. A surgeon who travels back in time from the present to the end of the Edo period. He saves many lives with his modern medical knowledge, the cooperation of the people of that time, and his enthusiasm and creativity.

[Kinokawa City, Wakayama Pre., Report 1]
I went to Kokawa Temple, an old temple in Kinokawa City.
According to the Kokawa Temple website, the story of this temple dates back to the end of the Nara period.
Just like Kiyomizu-dera Temple in Kyoto and other temples, this temple has a mysterious and intriguing story that are like traditional folk tales, and they are depicted in picture scrolls owned by the temple. The scrolls are national treasures. They are definitely worth a look.

It seems that the temple prospered and expanded after that, but during the Toyotomi era it encountered many battles and most of it was burned down. However, in the Edo period, it was revived under the protection and donations of the Kishu Tokugawa family, and has survived to the present day. So you can feel the "prestige" of the Tokugawa family everywhere.
Unlike many temples in tourist destinations, there is no strange commercialism, and the Buddha statues and gates, which were once vividly colored, are now faded, but this only adds to the age and makes the temple feel more historic.

What particularly interested me about this temple was the story of the tiger. In the main hall here is a tiger carving that was donated by the 8th Sh**un, Yoshimune. This tiger carving is called the "Wild Raider Tiger" and is said to have been carved by Hidari Jingoro. Hidari Jingoro is the famous carver known for the sleeping cat and three monkeys at Nikko Toshogu Shrine.

Once upon a time, this tiger carving somehow break loose from the temple, and every night it would destroy the neighboring fields and attack livestock, causing trouble for the people. Where on earth could this tiger come from? Everyone was talking about it.

One day, the head priest of Kokawa Temple happened to look at the tiger in the main hall and found that it was smeared with blood around its mouth. So it must have been the work of the carved tiger! He ate some livestocks. The head priest then drove nails into the tiger's eyes to stop it from breaking loose, so the carving tiger could not move any more. Since then, the village has not been ravaged by tigers and people have lived in peace.

Hidarijingoro's carvings are so amazing that they are rumored to look almost alive, even though they are carvings.

I am going to ask you to get it try "mugwort udon". From the name, you can imagine white udon noodles topped with mugwort tempura. So, I asked the owner of the dinner in the temple grounds...
"No, no, mugwort is kneaded into the udon."

What? What kind of udon is that? ? ? Aren't you a little curious?
Does it smell like mugwort? Unfortunately, I ended up not buying it, but if you visit Kokawa Temple, why not try it?

【Katsuragi City, Wakayama Pre., Report 2】

The Omoya main house is located behind the sake brewery house. The owner and his family live in this house. In fact, this is the place where you can taste the sake brewed at the brewery house. In other words, we are visiting a private house where is still in use as a living space and tasting the sake. It's an honor for us to be able to enter someone's home, but I also feel a little sorry (lol)

Right after we stepped into the omoya main house, we felt nostalsic with many Showa-era memories. Not only was there an old telephone, but there was also a kaidan tansu (step drawers) using the space under the stairs. You can actually climb up the top and slide the ceiling to enter the second floor.

The tatami rooms allow you to enjoy the seasonal scenery. The bath is heated with firewood. And each glass sliding door in this house is decorated with kumiki wooden joinery work. If we carelessly break this, no one would be able to fix this complicated kumiki wooden joinery work. Have to be careful!

We can taste sake while enjoying at the garden view from the tatami room. Usually, only sake in a glass is served, and that is all. But here, proper snacks are also served. Tasting sake, enjoying the snacks and admiring the garden view.
How luxurious, isn't it?!

We went down to the doma dirt floor and passed through the noren curtain to the kattefuchi back door? There was a well.
This was also an antique well. We drop a wooden bucket was into the well. We pull the rope down and the other wooden bucket is rise up with water. All we need is a man power. Not motor power.

Large goldfishes are swimming in a pond made with the clear water used for sake. Listening to the sound of the water trickling, I could sit here for hours. Time flows so quietly here.

Be sure to stop by the shop before leaving here. We recommend the "Sake Stamp Book", rather than the Goshuin Stamp Book. This is a book in which you can stick the labels of sake you come across on your travels around the country. This looks like it could make quite an interesting collection. There is a bottle of sake you'll want to stick in your sake stamp book, named "Tabizake".
It says that "we cannot be purchased online". So be sure to come here, buy one, and stick the label in your "Sake Stamp Book".

【Katsuragi City, Wakayama Prefecture, Report 1】

Yesterday (March 15th, 2025) I visited Kinokawa City in Wakayama Prefecture. First of all, we visited the Kinokawa sake brewery, named "HatsuZakura" that was the top recommendation of our guide.

Hatsuzakura brewery has been in business since 1866 (around the End of the Edo period), and this is a wooden brewery designated a tangible cultural property. There are no glass windows neither light fixtures as well, and the building is designed to skillfully control natural light with shutters and other devices. And this brewery house uses the wild trees as beams in the ceiling and these beams give an atomospher of the long history and dignity.

Stone walls are often found inside the brewery. They were made to imitate the stone walls of the moats of castles in Kishu (the old name of Wakayama Pre.). Such stone walls can be seen here and there in the brewery.

Over the years, unfortunately various damages have been found in the brewery house these days. To repair or fix them, shrine carpenters are needed, not ordinary carpenters. However, there are very few shrine carpenters available these days, and the cost of repairs by them is so expensive. "so it is difficult to get repairs done" the owners of the brewery house says.

As time has passed from the start of business in the Edo Period to the present, quality management for sake have been mechanized, but the subtleties of the sake brewing process still rely on human sense, experience, and judgment, it is probably the combination of these two that makes "today's sake" what it is.
