洗心窯　川岸和彦

作陶歴40年。老練ながら、口にするのは柔らかい言葉の数々です。「越前の土は扱いやすくて、今でも助けてもらってる」「動物も作るけど、純真無垢に作る子どもには勝てないなぁ」「お客さんと話すのは楽しい。ひとりだと凝り固まっちゃうからさ」そう語る川岸さんが作るのは、厚みがあって軽い器。温もり感じる、食卓でも扱いやすい、まさに暮らし助かる器です。

He has been making pottery for 40 years. Despite being an old hand, he speaks softly.
"Echizen clay is easy to handle and still supports me in my work," says Mr. Kawagishi. He creates charming animal figures but admits, "I can't beat the pure and innocent creations of children." He loves talking with customers. "If I work alone, I get stuck in my own style," he shares. His thick, lightweight vessels bring warmth to any table, making them both beautiful and practical for everyday use.

「銅像になりたい」といたずらっぽく笑う諸井さんは眼鏡のまち・鯖江にレンズ専門の施設をオープン。「紫外線から目を守るのがレンズの役割」「日本人は目で伝えるから濃いサングラスは向かない」とレンズについて語りだすと止まりません。故郷・浜松の「やらまいか」という言葉のように、眼鏡の次の100年を作ろうと挑戦しています。

Inui Lense / Lens Park- Mr. Haruhiko Moroi

Mr. Moroi, who smiles playfully and says he would like to leave his mark in history, has opened a facility specializing in eyeglass lenses in Sabae, the town of eyeglasses. He is an expert of lenses, and people cannot stop him speaking of lenses. "The role of lenses is to protect the eyes from ultraviolet rays" and "Japanese people communicate with their eyes, so dark sunglasses are not suited to them". Like the word "Yaramaika" in his hometown of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka, meaning why not give it a try, he has been challenging himself to create the next 100 years of eyeglasses in the industry.

井上徳木工　井上孝之さん

木地だけでなく塗りや蒔絵についても勉強していると他業の職人からも一目置かれる井上さん。仕事の上でのモットーはないと笑います。納期を守るとかきれいに作るとかは当たり前、要望より少しでもクオリティを上げたものを出したい。そしてクオリティを一定に保って数を作るのが俺ら職人の仕事。そう語る真っ直ぐな眼差しが印象的です。

Mr Inoue is recognised by craftsmen in other industries for studying not only woodwork but also lacquering and maki-e. He laughs that he doesn'tlaugh humbly admits he doesn’t follow a specific motto in his work. He believes in naturally meeting delivery deadlines and creating beautiful products. His goal? To deliver items that surpass expectations in quality and craftsmanship. “Producing a consistent number of high-quality products is the essence of a craftsman’s job”, says Mr. Inoue. The straightforward and passionate approach to his craft is impressive.

風来窯　大屋宇一郎さん

最近、SNSでキリンがモチーフの作品を見た人が訪れるという風来窯。大屋さんは動物の造形をする時が最も没頭すると言います。一方、まちの工房として顔の見える関係の中で地元の人に使ってもらえる器も作っていきたいのだそう。体のリズムが土に伝わる蹴（け）ろくろを愛用し、越前の風土の雰囲気を持つ地元の土で越前焼を作っています。

Furaigama - Mr. Uichiro Ooya

Furaigama has recently gained customers after their works with giraffe motifs were seen on SNS. Ooya-san says he is most immersed in his craft when making animals. Also they wish to be a local workshop that has a face-to-face relationship with locals who use their products. They create Echizen pottery through experienced movement while using a potter's wheel and by using locally sourced clay with unique features only found in Echizen.

KISSO is an accessory brand created by a glasses material trading company of the same name. They have created vibrant and colorful rings and bangles made from the material used to make eyeglass frames. Since all of the patterns are assembled by the craftsman, each one is one-of-a-kind. The materials they are made out of are natural so they rarely cause allergies. They are also lightweight and blend naturally against your skin.

工房紹介：三崎タンス店

江戸末期の創業以来150年以上、武生タンス町通りに店を構える老舗家具店。江戸〜明治時代の金庫「越前箪笥」に始まり、大正〜昭和時代の嫁入り道具「総桐箪笥」、平成〜令和時代になると無垢材のテーブルや食品ケースなどの製作も。創業時から培う越前指物の技術を受け継ぎながら、現代の暮らしに即したアップデートを続けています。

Workshop Showcase: Misaki Tansu

A long-established furniture store that has stood on Takefu Tansumachi Dori for over 150 years since its foundation at the end of the Edo period. From the Edo Period to the Meiji Period they created safes called “Echizen Tansu”. From the Taisho Period to the Showa Period they created chests made from paulownia wood for trousseau. Then from the Heisei Period to the current Reiwa Period they have been making things such as wooden tables and cases for food. Using Echizen joinery techniques that have been passed down since their founding, they continue to create things fit for the modern era.

工房紹介：山田英夫商店

越前打刃物の産地で営む包丁問屋。鍛治職人や研ぎ職人によって作られた刃に、柄付けやヒズミ調整、名入れをして商品に仕上げます。今では問屋に留まらず、2015年に自社ブランド『風味絶佳ECHIZEN』を発表しました。「丁寧に作られたものを、丁寧に使ってほしい」そんな想いから、研ぎ直しなどのメンテナンスも受け付けています。

Workshop Showcase: Yamada Hideo Shoten

Yamada Hideo Shoten is a knife wholesaler operating in the production area of Echizen cutlery. They add handles, adjustments, and names onto blades made by blacksmiths and sharpeners to make a finished product. Not stopping at being just a wholesaler, they created their own brand called “Fumi Zekka ECHIZEN” in 2015. They also want things made with care to be used with care so they offer knife sharpening maintenance services.

工房紹介：清水紙工

越前和紙の産地にて、紙漉き後の加工を担うメーカーです。マイナスイオンが発生する和紙、水に溶ける和紙、防菌/防腐/消臭効果のある和紙。歴史と伝統を守りつつも、未来を見据え、新しい和紙を開発します。またソーシャルグッドな紙を提案するプロジェクト『Paper for good』の第一弾として、土に還るピクニックシート『CITON』を発表。

Workshop Showcase: Shimizu Shikoh

Shimizu Shikoh is a manufacturer that mainly does post-process work for washi after it has been made. Washi that generates negative ions, washi that dissolves in water, and washi that has antibacterial/preservative/deodorizing effects. They develop new washi paper that conforms to the future while preserving history and tradition. In addition they have started a project called “Paper for good” which strives to create paper that is eco friendly. For the first product of this project they created “CITON”, a picnic sheet that is biodegradable.

For over 3 generations of owners, Matsuda Maki-e has been bringing happiness to their customers. In 2008, the 2nd generation was designated as a modern craftsman. 「ほやって言うとっけて（そう言ってくれて）うれしいわ」と、たおやかな丹南弁と笑顔で話す五十嵐さんは、海外のアーティストに「あなたの紙があったからこそ、この作品は生まれた」と言わしめる越前和紙の伝統工芸士。かつて当たり前の存在として生活を支えてきた襖紙のように、人の助けになるものを生み出せたらと考えています。

Igarashi-san, a traditional craftsman, responds “I am glad to hear that” in a soft tannan accent in response to a foreign artist who told her “this piece was only possible because of your paper”. She wishes to create something that will help support people like how fusama paper (used for paper sliding doors), which were commonplace, used to.

越前箪笥職人小柳範和さん

越前箪笥には釘を使わずに木を組む指物技術、表面を保護するための漆塗り、そして鉄の飾り金具の3つの技術が必要です。約30年間、小柳さんは技術を磨き、様々なオーダーに対応してきました。60年職人をしている父親に比べると今はまだ折り返し。次の30年は「ものづくりは楽しいを伝える」をコンセプトにやっていきたいそうです。

Oyanagi Tansu - Mr. Norikazu Oyanagi

Echizen chest of drawers require three key skills; joinery techniques without the use of nails, protective lacquer coating, and decorative metal fittings. Over the course of 30 years, Mr. Oyanagi has honed his skills and has taken on a variety of orders. Compared to his father who has 60 years of experience however, he still has a long way to go. For his next 30 years, he plans to proceed with the concept of “creating things is fun.”

タケフナイフビレッジ　戸谷祐次さん

言葉の端々に父親へのリスペクトがにじむ戸谷さんは、シェフに包丁の研ぎ方を教えるためパリへ出向くこともある研ぎ師です。ビレッジ内で働く若い人の質問にも隠すことなく全て教えています。自身は父の後ろ姿を研究し、ポイントは脱力と肩甲骨だと気づいたそう。「体の使い方を知って10枚の瓦が割れるようになった」と笑顔で語りました。

Takefu Knife Village - Mr. Yuuji Totani

Totani-san is a knife sharpener who teaches chefs how to sharpen knives, sometimes even abroad in places like Paris, and has a lot of respect for his father which is apparent in the manner in which he speaks. He also openly answers all of the questions the young craftsman at the village have openly. He also told us while smiling that he can break 10 tiles at once because he studied his fathers back and learned the proper techniques of using his shoulders.

名物職人に会いに行こう！
丸廣意匠　廣瀬康弘さん

家業である木製の吹付塗装を継いで15年。木に塗れる最初の1回目が大事だと最近気づいたそうです。材料となる木は硬い、柔らかい、木目が深い、塗料を吸うなど性質が異なります。それを見極め、木によって塗料の順番を変えて層を重ね、強度と美しさを共存させねばなりません。「吹き付けだから楽ということはない」と廣瀬さんは言います。

Maruhiro Isho - Mr. Yasuhiro Hirose

It has been 15 years since he inherited his family's wood spray painting business. He has recently realized the importance of the first coat of painting. The wooden material often has differing qualities such as its hardness, softness, wood grain, and the way it absorbs the paint. They have to assess each wood and change the spraying order and layers to bring out the best in each item. Hirose-san says that “Just because it is spray painting, it doesn’t mean it is easy”.

越前町エリア

粘りのある鉄分の多い陶土が取れた越前町は、越前焼のふるさと。実は北陸最大のやきもの産地でもあります。かつては、良質な土が見つかると窯元の集団が集まり、その場で土を捏ね、窯をつくり焼き上げていました。土がなくなると、また良質な土を求めて移動したそう。現在はその窯跡は陶芸村近辺に200基以上発見されており、古くから焼き物の一大産地でした。しかし1600年代に焼き物の需要が減り、他の地域では茶道で使う焼き物を作り出す中、越前焼は日常の器を作り続け、今もその文化が残っています。越前焼は日本六古窯の一つに選ばれたことにより、現代は日本でも注目を浴びる焼き物産地となり、陶芸祭などには県外などからもたくさんのお客様が訪れます。温故知新の精神を大切に新しいもの作りへ挑戦しながらも、主張しすぎず、でも地味すぎない越前焼は、福井人らしさを現しているようにも思います。

The Echizen Town area is known for Echizen Pottery, one of the six ancient kilns of Japan. The pottery made in the area still use locally sourced clay for all of their products. The clay in the area is rich in iron giving the pottery a hard finish.
Echizen pottery is also well known for their simple appearance and mainly produced everyday use items. Due to Echizen pottery not adapting to making high quality tea sets like other areas had during the sixteenth hundreds, the craft declined until it was revived with the building of the Echizen Pottery Village and increase in interest in the six ancient kilns.
The area is rich in nature and is the perfect place for those who love pottery. There is also a festival called Pottery Festa that takes place at Echizen Pottery Village which attracts many visitors.

今立エリア

「越前和紙産地でそろわない和紙はない」といわれるほど、種類も生産量も日本一の和紙産地が越前市今立地区。紙の歴史は約1500年前に始まり、紙の神様川上御前が祀られている神社「岡太神社・大瀧神社」は、日本で唯一全国の紙業界から崇敬を集める紙祖神となっています。江戸時代後期の1843年に再建された社殿は、本殿と拝殿が繋がっている「日本一複雑な屋根」を持つ建物として、国の重要文化財にも指定されています。美しく繊細で今立地区では必ず訪れてほしいスポットの１つです。

また越前和紙は日本で最初のお札「藩札」などの重要な紙やふすまを漉いていた工房が多かった中、現在は有名ホテルの壁紙やレストランなどで利用される新しい形の越前和紙へと移り変わり、今ではこの地を求めて訪問する国内外のお客様も増えている場所に進化し続けています。

The Imadate area of Echizen City has such a wide assortment of washi makers that it is said that “any type of washi you desire can be found here”. Washi production in the area is known as Echizen Washi and began over 1500 years ago. There is a shrine dedicated to the goddess of paper called Otaki/Okamoto Shrine which is revered all throughout Japan as the only shrine dedicated to washi. The shrine’s main building was built in 1843 and is well known for its complex roof. It is beautiful and delicate making it a must-visit spot of the Imadate area.

This area had many washi workshops that produced important washi such as Japan’s first banknotes and also fusuma papers. Now, they mainly produce custom made washi used as decorations for hotels and other places. The area recently has gained both national and international travelers who are interested in washi.

ものづくりのまち河和田

鯖江市の河和田地区は、1500年以上の歴史がある越前漆器が生まれたまち。
伝統工芸である漆器は分業で作られており、木地師や塗師、蒔絵師など
越前漆器にまつわるさまざまな職人が日々区割りながら働いています。

またこのエリアの漆器は「ハレの日」の器としてではなく、
毎日の食卓に使える器として、漆器とともにある暮らしを提案し続けています。

また境内神社として、「敷山神社」と「八幡神社」の２つの漆器神社があります。
どちらも眺めがよく、石段を登ると、河和田のまちを一望できるおすすめスポットです。
毎年10月に開催される、作り手とつながる、ものづくりの体感型マーケット「RENEW」は、
ここ河和田地区にある「うるしの里会館」がメイン会場となり、地域全体が盛り上がります！

The Kawada area of Sabae City has a lacquerware making history of over 1,500 years. The traditional craft of lacquerware is made with a division of labor, including woodworkers, lacquer artists, and maki-e artists. Various craftsmen related to Echizen lacquerware work in these separate sections each day.
The lacquerware created in this area are not meant for special occasions and instead are meant to be used everyday. The area continues to make lacquerware that people use daily in their lives.
There are also two shrines dedicated to lacquerware within the area, “Shikiyama Shrine” and “Hachiman Shrine”. Both have great views and are recommended spots where you can see the entirety of the Kawada area.
Every year in October an open factory event called RENEW is held with the main event stage being located at Urushi Sato Kaikan in this area.

めがねの聖地さばえ

さばえの眼鏡づくりの歴史はおよそ100年。
今や国内産のメガネフレームの90％以上を製造する日本一の「めがねの聖地」です。

その歴史は、冬は雪深く産業がない農業だけの暮らしを支えるため「国産のめがねの祖」とも呼ばれる増永五左衛門が、大阪からめがね職人を招き、農家の副業として広めたことから始まりました。

1981年に、世界で初めて軽くて丈夫なチタン製めがねを開発。国際的なめがねの産地として有名になり、今ではめがねのまちとなって「商店街」や「メガネストリート」に、
めがねをモチーフにしたものがたくさんあり、それを見つける街歩きもオススメです！

Sabae Area - Glasses Production Area

The Sabae area has a glasses production history of 100 years. Sabae currently produces around 90% of all eyeglass frames produced in Japan and is known as the mecca of glasses.

Its history began when Gozaemon Masunaga, also known as the “father of domestic eyeglasses,” invited eyeglass craftsmen from Osaka to spread the craft as a side job for farmers, as it supported the livelihood of farmers who had no work during the winter months due to deep snow.

In 1981, the area developed the world's first lightweight and durable titanium glasses. Sabae has become famous as an international eyeglass production area, and is now a city of glasses, with a shopping district and “Megane Street” which means glasses street. There are also many items with glasses as a motif, so we recommend walking around town to find them!

Sabae City, Fukui Prefecture is the city of glasses! Once you get off Sabae Station, you will be greeted by eyeglass motifs all over the city. Plus Jack is a unique workshop in Sabae where all the processes of eyeglasses are produced in-house.

「和紙の奥深さを学ぶ　柳瀬良三製紙所の和紙漉き職人体験」

柳瀬良三製紙所では、伝統工芸士でもあり三代目でもある柳瀬京子さんをはじめとした女性職人が活躍。体験では、京子さんとご主人の靖博さんに゙、和紙の説明から和紙の漉き方、タペストリーづくりまでを教わります。職人が実際和紙を漉く工房で職人の道具を使い、職人になった気分で体験をお楽しみください。

柳瀬良三製紙所は、和菓子の包装として使われるかけ紙や、包み紙などを主に製作する和紙漉き工房。金型落水紙の繊細な技法を使った和紙や、色とりどりのかわいらしい和紙を漉いています。

漉き終わったら和紙を乾かしている間に、隣接する「RYOZO」ショップで、
和紙小物などをお土産にしてみてはいかがでしょうか。

A deeper look into Japanese paper; Washi making experience at RYOZO Paper Mill

At the workshop you will meet female craftsmen, such as Ms. Kyoko Yanase, who is a third generation washi craftsman. In the experience, Kyoko-san and her husband, Yasuhiro-san, will teach you about Japanese paper, how to make Japanese paper, and how to make a tapestry together.

Yanase Ryozo Paper Mill is a Japanese paper making studio that mainly produces wrapping paper and Japanese confectionery wrappers. They make Japanese paper using the delicate method of kanagata rakusui and also cute and colorful Japanese paper.

While the washi that you make dries, check out their shop RYOZO. There are cute Japanese souvenirs made out of washi.
