Come on a nature adventure with us!

Our guests were thrilled with our recent snowshoeing & crampons excursion to see a frozen waterfall near Lake Shikotsu.

Hot tea and snacks at the waterfall’s basin brought everyone a lot of happiness!

At long last (this year), the drift ice has finally arrived in Eastern Hokkaido!

Most years, the drift ice reaches Hokkaido - starting its journey as river ice from the Amur River in Russia - in late January, but this year it has been “stuck” just north of Hokkaido at Sakhalin Island.

Better late than never! This natural wonder is a floating ecology of marine life, and the drift ice views change every day with the tides. For nature lovers, the drift ice is one of those goosebump experiences.

Hokkaido red foxes (kita kitsune) are widely seen all over our island, and have adapted very well to human habitations.

Their winter coats are magnificent and warm their scrawny bodies, which are most evident in spring when they shed their winter coats to reveal their skinny, delicate physiques.

While adorable, the foxes should not be fed or touched: the former quickly leads to a begging mindset which endangers them on roadways; the latter can result in contracting echinococcus if bitten, which is a parasitic tapeworm which foxes can carry from eating mice and moles.

In winter, these foxes can sometimes be observed jumping into the snow to pounce on their next meal!

They are also devoted parents, as the males will hunt throughout the spring and early summer to cater food for their mating partner and pups who are in hiding.

The Steller’s sea eagles are one of the top wildlife highlights of Eastern Hokkaido every winter.

These migratory birds fly down from Russia, arriving in Rausu at Shiretoko Peninsula in January for their two month stay by the rich waters of the Sea of Okhotsk.

Morning and afternoon sea cruises to watch the eagles feast on the fish feeding draws wildlife enthusiasts from around the world.

At times, we can see over one hundred of these majestic eagles diving into the sea for their daily meals.

By late March the eagles have returned northward to resume their annual breeding cycle, making their time in Hokkaido short yet sweet.

Lake Shikaribetsu Ice Festival, on now until mid-March weather permitting, is a collection of igloos housing a variety of fun activities including an ice bar, ice chapel, onsen & changing rooms and more.

Located at the gateway of Eastern Hokkaido, this lake is frozen solid due to the cold temperatures of the region.

The Sounkyo Ice Festival - on now until early March - is one of the longest running winter festivals in Hokkaido, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary!

This winter festival encourages visitors to clamber up the multi-story ice structures, pose with the ice art, tube down the ice luges and have a warm sake while at it (1 cup of sake is included in the ¥1000 entry ticket).

There is also a nightly fireworks show at 7:45pm, which can also be appreciated from a gorge-view onsen at one of the hotels up higher on the gorge.

The whooper swans of Eastern Hokkaido migrate thousands of kilometers from Siberia to winter in Hokkaido’s hot spring lakes.

Seeing them is a magical experience, and we can often get to within a few meters of them as they gather near the lake shorelines where the hot spring sources are more easily accessible.

Eastern Hokkaido is a wildlife paradise throughout the year, but for bird lovers winter is certainly the best time of year.

Snowshoeing across Mt. Asahidake’s Sugatami Plateau is a peak experience for our winter tours.

Guests need luck on their side as we only have about 1 clear-weather day per week during the powder season.

This week our guests from Australia were thrilled to experience one of Hokkaido’s most magical sites: snowshoeing across the mostly flat plateau at 1,600 meters to reach the steaming fumaroles at the base of Hokkaido’s highest mountain.

Dogsledding is by far our most requested activity every year, and it’s easy to see why.

The adorable and well-trained mixed husky dogs, the thrill of mushing at speed, and the sublime winter wonderland all around: it’s a bucket-list activity for most winter visitors to Hokkaido.

Here at in Southern Daisetsuzan N.P. near Obihiro, the dogsledding season started in late December and will run into mid-March, weather permitting.

Unfortunately, the entire season is now sold out at this operator, but other operators still have availability although none during the peak February festival season.

We always tell our guests to get in touch with us in late summer to avoid disappointment, as the demand far outstrips the supply for this activity.

The ice fishing season has officially started with our earliest venue - Lake Kanayama in Minami-Furano - having opened last week.

Our group caught 4 smelts in an enjoyable afternoon on the frozen lake. The fish were made into tempura, along with a few slices of pumpkin for that extra Hokkaido touch.

This shared experience with your loved ones is an iconic Hokkaido activity, and along with dogsledding, snowmobiling & snowshoeing, are among our most popular winter activities.

Join us on an unforgettable private tour, always created around our guests’ preferences.

A magical start to winter this year in Hokkaido!

Our lucky guests experienced the thrill of Asahidake’s copious snowfall: snowshoeing in the primary forests at the resort level, and riding the ropeway to the blizzard-laden Sugatami Plateau which sits below Hokkaido’s highest peak.

To say it was exhilarating is an understatement!

At the Hakodate Tropical Botanical Gardens, the top attraction has become the Snow Monkeys who reside in the mostly filthy onsen bath within.

These lucky Japanese Macaque’s are not native to Hokkaido - where it’s too cold for them to survive in winter - but rather were brought from the main island of Honshu.

However, our Snow Monkeys do not enjoy the same palatial hot springs as their more famous cousins in Nagano. Often our monkeys and the onsen bath they’re in look rather ridiculous.

All the same, the kawaii overload is real!

Gourmet Hokkaido ranks for many visitors as the best in the world, particularly for seafood, wagyu and local delicacies.

We recently visited Hakodate with our gourmand guests from Malaysia, and they were thrilled with the authentic and highest quality omakase (chef’s choice) dinner at Sakuramichi. It doesn’t get more local than this!

Foliage still stunning in Sapporo even well into November!

But, look closely at Mt. Sankaku (Triangle Mountain) in the background and you’ll see winter creeping on in hues of brown and gray.

Enjoy the last of the foliage while it’s here!

There are a variety of interesting DIY activities at the Upopoi National Ainu Museum in Shiraoi, just over an hour from Sapporo.

Our guests participated in an Ainu cuisine workshop where they learned about the principles of Ainu cuisine before getting the first hand experiences of creation and consumption!

Other activities at the Ainu museum include embroidery, mukkuri mouth harp making & lesson, and more.

The Ainu people inhabited all of Hokkaido before the arrival of the Wajin - as the Japanese were called throughout history - in the 13th C, then were systematically dispossessed of their lands and suffered immense cultural loss. The newly constructed National Ainu Museum is an effort to preserve and spread the remaining Ainu legacy.

Foliage is all about timing: one week can make all the difference, especially in Hokkaido where the seasons are pronounced.

At Hoheikyo Dam, a mere 45 minutes from downtown Sapporo, cliffs tower above the narrow reservoir below creating a scene fit for epic landscape paintings.

Dwarfed trees cling onto rugged canyon walls. Nighttime temperatures plummet as the sun disappears in the early afternoons, triggering fantastic koyo - foliage colors - that are nationally famous here in Japan.

This year we’ve witnessed remarkable foliage as cold crisp nights heralded the return of La Niña, the global weather oscillation pattern that nudges our seasons in Hokkaido a few weeks forward as compared to El Niño years.

In Hokkaido’s ever changing seasons, timing is everything for experiencing peak foliage.

It was such an honor for our founder Ido to have another chance to guide for the one-and-only Susan Spann ( ) and friend Jonelle ( ). Among their many accolades is a love for writing about all things Japan, particularly historical mystery novels!

With the introductions out of the way, our 6-Day Tour with Susan San and Jonelle San was absolutely spectacular in every way. Timing peak foliage at Daisetsuzan N.P. - despite the credit given by our VIP guests - was wonderful gift from nature!
