We recently visited Hakodate with our gourmand guests from Malaysia, and they were thrilled with the authentic and highest quality omakase (chef’s choice) dinner at Sakuramichi. It doesn’t get more local than this!

There are a variety of interesting DIY activities at the Upopoi National Ainu Museum in Shiraoi, just over an hour from Sapporo.

Our guests participated in an Ainu cuisine workshop where they learned about the principles of Ainu cuisine before getting the first hand experiences of creation and consumption!

Other activities at the Ainu museum include embroidery, mukkuri mouth harp making & lesson, and more.

The Ainu people inhabited all of Hokkaido before the arrival of the Wajin - as the Japanese were called throughout history - in the 13th C, then were systematically dispossessed of their lands and suffered immense cultural loss. The newly constructed National Ainu Museum is an effort to preserve and spread the remaining Ainu legacy.

Foliage is all about timing: one week can make all the difference, especially in Hokkaido where the seasons are pronounced.

At Hoheikyo Dam, a mere 45 minutes from downtown Sapporo, cliffs tower above the narrow reservoir below creating a scene fit for epic landscape paintings.

Dwarfed trees cling onto rugged canyon walls. Nighttime temperatures plummet as the sun disappears in the early afternoons, triggering fantastic koyo - foliage colors - that are nationally famous here in Japan.

This year we’ve witnessed remarkable foliage as cold crisp nights heralded the return of La Niña, the global weather oscillation pattern that nudges our seasons in Hokkaido a few weeks forward as compared to El Niño years.

In Hokkaido’s ever changing seasons, timing is everything for experiencing peak foliage.

It was such an honor for our founder Ido to have another chance to guide for the one-and-only Susan Spann ( ) and friend Jonelle ( ). Among their many accolades is a love for writing about all things Japan, particularly historical mystery novels!

With the introductions out of the way, our 6-Day Tour with Susan San and Jonelle San was absolutely spectacular in every way. Timing peak foliage at Daisetsuzan N.P. - despite the credit given by our VIP guests - was wonderful gift from nature!

Many visitors to Hokkaido assume that the flowers and melons are over when summer ends, which is simply not true.

Biei is especially vibrant in September and into October, with fall flowers in full bloom at Shikisai no Oka, snow topped Daisetsuzan mountain range in the distance, scenic hills of the Biei Patchwork Road, the iconic Blue Pond, and as always delicious gourmet stops on route!

Our beloved Furano & Biei Flower Fields Day Trip is well worth it even in October, with the lack of summer crowds being the cherry on top.

Mt. Asahidake is Hokkaido’s highest point at a mere 2,,291m, and is a remarkably beautiful strata-volcano with a massively blown out caldera.

Equally remarkable is the Sugatami Plateau, which was formed at the base of the mountain massif when the caldera erupted above. It’s a fairy tale-like plateau with a half dozen small ponds which formed when the lava and lahar hardened.

These images were captured last Sunday on a gloriously beautiful day by our wonderful guide Jacob Rashidi.

Fishing is a very popular pastime in Japan, with anglers regularly spotted at our volcanic lakes, pristine rivers and seashores.

Our guests enjoyed their fishing experience very much, and caught & released dozens of small fish in the afternoon activity.

Unfortunately, no mature fish were caught on this day, otherwise we would have pulled out the BBQ for a fantastic grilled fish on the spot!

Jun no Banya is one of those legendary Hokkaido eateries that is a must-do for gourmands visiting Shiretoko N.P. in Eastern Hokkaido.

The shack was originally built for Kita no Kuni Kara (From the Northern Country), a TV series spanning three decades that put Hokkaido in the hearts of many Japanese.

After filming ended, the shack was repurposed as a restaurant collective of a half dozen local women serving some of the best seafood in Japan.

Note: They only open from 9am-4pm, April to October

Hakodate - super famous for spring Sakura and historical sightseeing - is also a gourmands paradise.

Being a port city, Hakodate specializes in crab and a fantastic variety of seafood.

Hakodate “brown beef” wagyu is also highly recommended as the cows here enjoy a relatively warm climate, clean living environments, top quality feed and carefully curated fattening techniques.

Following Sapporo, Hakodate might just be Hokkaido’s 2nd best gourmet city.

The orcas are back! The orcas are back!

Shiretoko Peninsula is world famous for brown bears, however, this incredible place is a haven for an incredible diversity of wildlife across the year.

In spring, the top wildlife highlight are the orca whales which can be spotted at Rausu Bay nearly every day.

They’ll be moving on in June, so go see these gentle killers whales while you can.

Shibazakura is approaching full bloom right now!

In the little dairy farming town of Higashimokoto - not far from Shiretoko Peninsula - lies a hillside completely covered in pink moss phlox flowers.

While there are numerous shibazakura festivals in Hokkaido, including in Hakodate, Kutchan and Takinoue, none are as eye-popping as Higashimokoto’s.

But you better hurry because these little bloomers only last until early June at the latest, particularly with this year’s early blooms.
