Our city located in the middle of Japan contains much nature and many scenic and historical places.
SEKI is known as the capital of cutlery industry, where many swordsmiths have been raised since the Kamakura period (1185-1333). During the Age of Civil Wars (1467-1568) many military commanders came to favor the swords of SEKI, which were said to be “unbreakable, unbendable, and able to cut throu
gh anything”. Today, the tradition of metallurgy techniques has been passed down to modern cutleries like knives, scissors and so on, then SEKI City has prospered as one of the most famous place for cutlery with Solingen, Germany and became the best producer of cutlery in Japan.
日本のほぼ真ん中に位置し、豊かな山々と清らかな川に育まれ、文化や産業が息づき、歴史が薫るまち関市。
日本一の刃物の産地として繁栄しているその起源は古く、鎌倉時代に刀匠「元重」が関に住み着き、関鍛冶を広めたことにさかのぼるといわれています。その刀鍛冶の伝統技術は家庭用刃物にも受け継がれ、現在はドイツのゾーリンゲンと並ぶ世界有数の刃物の名産地として知られるようになりました。
市内を流れる清流長良川の河畔・小瀬の里で行われる、古式ゆかしき小瀬鵜飼。鵜飼の歴史は古く、奈良時代の史書にある｢美濃鵜飼｣にさかのぼるといわれています。3人の宮内庁式部職の鵜匠がその伝統の漁法を今も受け継ぎ、長良川の川面で繰り広げています。
川浦渓谷や高賀渓谷に代表される美しい自然、宗休寺、日龍峰寺、武芸八幡宮など由緒ある寺社に代表される歴史と文化に囲まれながら、東海北陸自動車道と東海環状自動車道の結節点という地の利を生かし、刃物産業や自動車産業を中心とした産業都市として国内はもとより世界へ飛躍していきます。
