The AEON Sendai closes its doors today, February 28, 2025, marking the end of 49 years in business at the heart of Sendai. Over the years, it has become a local landmark. The store was previously known as “Daiei,” and some locals still refer to it by that name. Currently, the store is filled with countless handwritten messages from the community.

本日2025年2月28日、仙台市中心部にあるイオン仙台店が49年にもわたる歴史に幕を下ろします。長年、地元にとってのランドマークのひとつの存在でした。以前はダイエーだったため、今でもその名前で呼ぶ地元の人がいらっしゃいます。店内には数えきれないくらいの手書きのメッセージが飾られていました。

*For overseas customers, we will provide instructions on how to make Musubimaru-shaped wagashi desserts (in English or Traditional Chinese). Unfortunately, we do not have instructions on how to make traditional Japanese desserts that reflect the atmosphere of the Sendai, Miyagi, and Tohoku regions. Still, we do have an advanced version of the Musubimaru-shape. We will all make it together with the instructor while watching their demonstration. Our staff will also be available to support you as much as possible.

Have you been to or heard of “antenna shops” in Japan? These specialty stores showcase and sell regional products from different prefectures and are usually located in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka, allowing people to experience local goods without traveling to those regions. Miyagi Prefecture’s antenna shop in Ikebukuro closed in 2024, and after a crowdfunding effort, they opened a new temporary shop in Nihonbashi Kayabacho on January 28, 2025. It’s a fantastic opportunity to explore Miyagi Prefecture’s unique regional flavors and traditional crafts. If you’re in Tokyo, be sure to visit! The shop will remain open until March 2026.

The Edo-Tokyo Museum, opened in 1993, is currently closed for major renovations. The Special Exhibition Edo-Tokyo Museum will be held at Tohoku History Museum. This exhibition introduces Edo’s history and culture through selected items from the museum’s “Edo Zone”. You can see many beautiful ukiyo-e paintings, everyday tools, and entertainment items that show how people lived in Edo. In addition, life-size models, such as a daimyo’s palanquin and a street vendor’s shoulder pole, will be on display. Step into the lively and exciting world of Edo!

This March 11 marks fourteen years since the Great East Japan Earthquake. The “Reconstruction Airport Piano,” a special piano that was damaged by the tsunami in Shichigahama Town, but later restored, will be placed at Sendai Airport. Anyone is welcome to play the “Reconstruction Airport Piano,” but on some days, a reservation is needed, and sometimes it is not available. Please check the website for details. The memorial concert “Requiem and Reconstruction V” will be held at 3:00 pm on March 10.
