SUMMER IS HERE! Festivals
“Abare Matsuri” in Ush*tsu, Noto-cho
The festival is dedicated to Yasaka Shrine and the first night involves residents/former residents of Ush*tsu carrying the kiriko (the giant portable lanterns/shrines) around town until they gather around the fires. The people carrying kiriko get close to the fire and sometimes suffer burns. Children riding the kiriko cover themselves in wet towels to protect themselves from the sparks. Abare Festival is sometimes called the Fire and Violence Festival or the Rampage Festival in English. The second day of the festival involves men destroying portables shrines by throwing them in the river, bashing them against concrete, and burning them in a fire.
