【 ~ BOND has joined the KUMANO TRAVEL community! ~ 】

BOND is a relaxing and cozy guesthouse located close to the Ukegawa bus stop in Hongu. The inn is run by the owners -- who also operate a bento box lunch service in the area -- and their pet dog. Meals use plenty of local, seasonal ingredients following the owners' sustainable ecological motto of "chisan chiso" 地産地消 or in English, locally produced, locally consumed. The bath and toilet are shared with the owners, but only one group booking is accepted per day, making it a comfortable retreat. With the Kogumotori-goe (to Koguchi) trailhead nearby, it is a convenient stay for Kumano Kodo walkers eventually heading to Nachi.
NOTE: There is a dog on the premises. Guests who have a dog allergy or who do not like dogs should consider a different accommodation.

【 ~ Kumano Hagi Matsumiya has joined the KUMANO TRAVEL community! ~ 】

Kumano Hagi Matsumiya is a historic inn located in Hagi, a small village north of Hongu village. It is currently operated by a married couple who hope to share its rich history and their simple hospitality with guests from all over the world.

Established in 1889, the inn was originally a popular stop for wood rafters who floated cedar and cypress logs along the Kumano-gawa River from Totsukawa Village to Shingu. Back then, the river was the highway, and Hagi, the area of the inn, was a busy place. The ruins of the harbor are still nearby.

There are seven Japanese-style rooms, shared baths, and a nostalgic turn-of-the-century ambiance. Meals are held in the dining area. It is conveniently located for Kumano Kodo Kohechi walkers, just a 13-minute walk to the Yakio trailhead and 7 minutes to the roadside rest area Oku-Kumano Hongu.

Shuttle service is offered to and from Hosshinmon-oji, Kumano Hongu Taisha, and Kogumotori-goe Ukegawa trailhead, making it a decent option for Nakahechi walkers as well.

現在は夫婦2人で営んでいる「熊野萩まつみや」は、明治22年【1889年】創業の老舗旅館です。

国道が整備されていない頃、十津川村から新宮までの交通手段は舟でした。十津川村で伐採された木材は、筏（いかだ）にして流しました。
十津川村と新宮の間に位置する萩地区は、中継地点として当時は筏師さんの宿泊で大変賑わったそうです。宿のすぐ近くの熊野川には、今でもかつての波止場が残っています。

現在の建物は増築されておりますが、賑わっていた頃の雰囲気を味わってもらいながら、昔のノスタルジーな気持に浸っていただけたら幸いです。

温泉も大浴場もありませんが、アットホームなおもてなしをさせていただきす。
熊野古道小辺路の果無（はてなし）登山口八木尾から徒歩13分、道の駅奥熊野ほんぐう店へは徒歩7分の距離です。

【 ~ Ume Blossoms Signal the Coming of Spring in Kumano 】

Dappled drops of pink and white signal spring is on its way!

They are ume flowers (once referred to as “plum blossoms”) blooming in the Kumano area.

Ume is a ubiquitous fruit used to make traditional Japanese “umeboshi” (dried, pickled ume), “umeshu” liqueur, and other savory products.

Visitors can even try umeshu at Umeshu Otanoshimidokoro Umeco, a standing bar-type tasting station near Kii-Tanabe Station.

Ume trees should bloom for just a couple more weeks in the area! Check them out!

Kawayu Onsen is a geological thermal wonder located on the Oto River, a tributary of the Kumano-gawa River. “Kawa” means “river” and “yu” means “hot water”. In Kawayu Onsen hot spring water bubbles to the surface of the crystal clear river.

Kawayu Onsen is perfect for a visit all year round. If you come in the winter months, don’t miss the giant Sennin-buro bath. Summer is perfect for cooling down with a swim. Spring and fall colors are best viewed relaxing from water level.

【#TanabeTuesday 〜 Pre-boarding Ticket Tables Make Crowded Bus Stops Smoother 〜】Using the local transportation system makes getting to the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi trailheads easy.But it is peak fall season, and many people tend to gather at bus stops at key times during the day.
