Meet the most recent assimilations into Maasai, the Yaaku of Lekurruki, a group who were originally cush*tic. Previously, they were hunters and gatherers in Mukogodo forest before being assimilated as livestock keepers.
Their cultural wear and color patterns remain interestingly unique.

Naibunga Upper Community Conservancy recently hosted a Laikipia Maasai cultural day at Murua Ekiya, aiming to preserve and promote the Laikipiak Masai culture while creating an income-generating opportunity. This exciting event brought together three community lands—Munichoi, Morupusi, and Ilpolei; showcasing their unique traditions and customs. Inspired by a learning trip to Maasai Mara, where they witnessed how cultural activities can generate revenue, the conservancy embarked on this venture.
The day was brimming with an array of captivating cultural activities. Attendees were treated to demonstrations of traditional animal slaughtering techniques, including the unique practise of drinking animal blood. They also witnessed a traditional Maasai wedding, learned about cow milking methods, observed arrow making and fire lighting techniques, participated in Maasai games known as ‘Nkeshui’, enjoyed mesmerizing moran dances, and discovered the art of washing milking guards and sharing meat, among many other fascinating experiences.
With the implementation of this Maasai cultural camp, the conservancy aims to tap into the lucrative tourism industry. Last year alone, tourism brought in a staggering Ksh. 265 billion in revenue. However, it is worth noting that Naibunga Upper did not receive any tourism income. By establishing this income-generating center, the conservancy seeks to change that and ensure that the local community benefits from tourism.
The event garnered the support of local authorities, including area chiefs and the area Member of the County Assembly (MCA), Hon. Nicholas Lempaira. Hon. Lempaira commended the initiative, highlighting its timeliness and the advantage it will give Naibunga Upper during the upcoming county-wide culture week organized by the Laikipia County government's tourism department. He emphasised the importance of promoting peaceful coexistence among all community lands within Naibunga Upper.
This cultural camp manyatta serves as a testament to the preservation of the Maasai culture in Laikipia County while providing economic opportunities for the community. It not only offers an immersive experience for visitors but also reinforces the importance of embracing and celebrating diverse cultural heritages.

Mzee James Lemaina (in red stripes) during Nasuluu board tourism training in Isiolo. Mzee is one of the board members of Nasuluu Community Conservancy, and he recalls in 1984 how he first tasted tourists' money as a dancer.

‘We had lots of wildlife in the area roaming around; the dances were the real deal, and I was in top gear as a moran. I led the dances, and we were paid 10 shillings per person daily, which was a lot of money back in the day," Mzee Lemaina says.

He was delighted that the training will help them get organized to plan how they can showcase their cultures in the now near-complete Nasuluu bandas.

The training is part of NRT Trading's capacity-building efforts to educate the boards on the management of bandas and what to expect when they fully operationalize. The bandas are located in Loruko near the Nasuluu conservancy headquarters and accessible via Buffalo Springs Main Gate.
