Who cares about perfection?
Even the moon is not perfect -its full of craters. The sea is incredibly beautiful, but salty and dark in depths. The sky is always infinite, but often cloudy.

So, everything that is beautiful isn't perfect, it's special. Therefore, stop being perfect but try to be free and live, doing what you love, not wanting to impress others. -legendary words of Marley.

The weekend is rolling in slowly. make it special not perfect.

In order to keep other males away from the ladies who are ready to mate (in estrus), dominant male giraffes guard the females. They are much more likely to get mating rights as a result of this.

Giraffes are social animals, however their social structure is more complex with with female-female associations more common than male-male or female-male associations.

In the picture below, the dominant male is performing the flehmen response, where he curls his upper lip and smells the female's urine.

Flehmen isn't just a funny face! It's a vital way for giraffes, and many other mammals, to gather information through their Jacobson's organ, located on the roof of their mouth.

By smelling the urine, the dominant male can detect hormones that tell him about the females reproductive status allowing him to determine if she's receptive to mating or if he might already have fathered the calf.

The dominant male signals his readiness to mate by tapping on the female's hind leg with his foreleg or resting his chin on her back. He usually follows her, sometimes for hours, until she allows him to mount her.

Thereafter, no long term bonds are formed between the male and the female.

TEA Originally from China, tea (Camellia sinensis) is a psychoactive shrub. The fabled Chinese emperor Shen Nung, who lived in the third millennium BC, is credited with discovering its benefits. He is claimed to have been enjoying a cup of hot water under a shrub's shade when one of the buds fell into it, making him an invigorating drink.

Tea was a Chinese monopoly for decades, but as tea became more and more popular domestically with the Brits, they, the British, became desperate to find an independent supplier and eventually succeeded in smuggling some cuttings to India.

Tea was first planted in Kenya in 1903, although commercial production did not begin for almost twenty years.

Strong and flavorful, Kenyan teas make up a significant portion of the commercial mixes available in the UK and Ireland. Kenya's principal clientele also includes Egypt, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Even though it's not complicated, producing tea requires a lot of labor. All year long, pickers, in the tea growing highlands like Kericho, are visible as they navigate among the bushes wearing their eye-catching yellow-and-green (KETEPA/Kenya Tea Packers) plastic aprons. They nipping off the top two leaves and bud of each bushโ€”no more is takenโ€”and place them into baskets.

A picker who works quickly can gather up to 70 kg in a single day, though half of that is more realistic;. The tea leaves are prepared for packing and shipment after they have finished withering, mashing, fermenting for a few hours, and receiving a final drying in hot air. The entire process can take as few as 24 hours.

Three years after planting, tea can be harvested; in the first year of production, it must be picked every eight days; in the second year, it must be picked every fourteen days; and in the fourth year, it must be picked every seventeen days. Following this, the bush needs to be pruned to maintain the proper height for picking, which can resume in three months.

Because the foliage is dense enough to keep other plants from growing beneath it, weeding is not necessary. Caffeine is the compound that gives tea its stimulating properties, and a cup of strong tea can have just as much caffeine as a cup of medium-strength coffee.

Because it is moderated by other alkaloids, including the relaxant thebaine, tea effects feel different.

Tea seems to alleviate your thirst, but in reality, it depletes the body of water since the human body needs fluid to absorb caffeine and thebaine. Therefore, strong tea, like beer, should not be consumed as a fluid to prevent dehydration.

The Heart of Kenyan Tea: Kericho -named after the early English tea farmer John Kerich. This information is unlikely to escape you due to heavy marketing from the travel industry and the presence of the Tea Hotel.

This region is known for its tea: Kenya is the major exporter to the United Kingdom and the third-largest producer in the world, behind Sri Lanka and India.

While admiring the deep green hills, you may want to stop and think about how, not too much more than a century ago, this areaโ€”of which the Kakamega Forest is the last remnantโ€”was a virgin rainforest. Today, it is covered in enormous, orderly expanses of tea plants.

After the First World War, tea bushes were brought in from China and India to establish the estates.

It is the most significant tea-growing region in Africa due to its temperate environment and renowned, consistent, year-round afternoon rain showers.
Despite the division and redistribution of many European estates to small farmers following independence, massive tea plantations continue to dominate the region.

The town of KERICHO appears as orderly as the immaculate rows of shrubs encircling it. It's a peaceful, trouble-free area to explore, with polite locals, and it's unique in many respects. Trimmed, tidy, and practical, it lacks much of the disorganized look of most upcountry towns.

The town has a significant Asian community; take note of the enormous Sikh Gurdwara and the Guru Nanak Temple, both of which have excellent gardens that are well worth a stroll. With single-story dukas flanked by colonnaded walkways where the plantation "memsahibs" of fifty years ago allegedly went shopping, several of the streets have a faintly Oriental vibe.

The grey stone Holy Trinity Church completes this odd, composite image. It strives so hard to look Norman but it's unfortunate to mention that it was only constructed in 1952. Straight out of the English shires.

Mt. Kilimanjaro view from Amboseli National Park. The small peak on the left is called Mawenzi, stands at 5,149 meters.

Kilimanjaro itself is a massif, which is a group of mountains that are close together and are considered a single mountain range. The massif is made up of three distinct volcanic cones:

1. Kibo is the highest peak in Africa and the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
2. Mawenzi is the second highest peak in the Kilimanjaro massif and the third highest mountain in Tanzania.
3. Shira is the oldest and the least well-preserved of the three peaks. It is extinct, and its highest point, Shira Cathedral, is 4,005 meters above sea level.

01/03/2024

Lake Victoria is located in a shallow dip (less than 80m) between the Western and Eastern Rift valleys, but is not part of the Rift System.

Approximately 500 distinct kinds of vividly colored tropical fish, also referred to as haplochromines or cichlids, were found there up until the 1960s.

These fish were completely endemic, meaning they were specific to the lake.

Puzzled as to how such a dizzying array of species managed to evolve in this relatively uniform environment in the course of a mere million years, scientists have proposed that the lake must have dried out at some point in its history, creating a number of smaller lakes where fish underwent independent evolutionary processes.

Cichlids from Lake Victoria are a common aquarium fish and one of the most widespread bigger kinds, the tilapia is a regional delicacy that is grilled or fried and served whole.

Nile perches, which are carnivores, were brought to the lake in the early 1960s. The perches quickly consumed through the cichlid population, bringing some species dangerously close to extinction.

However, many species have managed to survive in smaller lakes surrounding the main lake or in areas of the lake that are too shallow for the perch.

The introduction of the perch, which can weigh up to 250kg, has been a bit of a Trojan horse for local people. While they're consumed locally and sold for export (good news for the lakeshore economy), traditional fishing and processing have been hit hard by the arrival of modern vessels and factories, taking their profits elsewhere.

29/02/2024

Amboseli National Park's observation hill, sometimes known as "Poachers Hill," is one of the must-see locations to hike during your safari to Amboseli.

It's the only location where you can get a 360-degree unobstructed overhead view of the entire park and because of this, back in the days, poachers used to trek to the top of the hill to view and locate wildlife, mainly rhinos.

Amboseli national park's mostly flat territory is dominated by this hill -a pyramid-shaped volcanic hill.

You need to have high-quality binoculars to see the park's distant areas as binoculars with strong lenses are necessary for any optimal game viewing experience.

The hill's name comes from a well-known pastime that takes place there: observation and this is the reason the locals called it the observation hill -due to the 360-degree view point.

The Amboseli National Park Observation Hill is situated near to the park's center on the western side of the park. Hiking to this hill does not require any unique hiking abilities, but it does demand some moderate physical fitness.

Just a few hours of hiking amid the jagged volcanic rocks will get you to the summit. You can get the best view of the park's fauna from the highest point. The hill's formation occurred during the era of Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain. It is of volcanic origin. It originated from the eruption and subsequent cooling of hot lava on Earth due to volcanic activity.

The picturesque natural beauty of the park's verdant foliage and various inhabitants envelop the observation hill of Amboseli National Park.

The Enkongu Narok wetlands that round the hill to the east draw a great number of elephants and hippos. Elephants come here to cool off, while hippos congregate in the cool mashes with water pools.

Mount Kilimanjaro may be seen clearly in the south, especially on clear evenings.

The well-known Kioko Lake is located on the north-western side. Here, hippos rule the area, making loud noises while playing in the water's pool all day long.

The mother lake, Lake Amboseli, is located in the park's center and wildlife uses the lake as a resting place when visiting this location to re-hydrate.

The Tsavo Man Eaters

Worldwide, lions are rightly feared and revered; nonetheless, the renowned "man-eaters of Tsavo" were arguably the most lethal lions to have ever roamed the earth!

Engineer Lt Col John Henry Patterson was the man in charge of the building of a railway bridge across the Tsavo River, in Kenya, in 1898, during the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway.

Efforts, however, were quickly put on hold when two male lions, said to be without mane began dragging railway workers from their tents at night and eating them.

The future of the railway works was threatened when the remaining workers concluded that the lions had to be evil-spirits or devils.

This compelled the man Patterson to design an increasing number of cunning traps, โ€ฆ but the lions always managed to get around them and attack through gaps in the camp's fortifications.

Finally, by hiding on a rickety wooden scaff that was baited with a donkey co**se, Patterson was able to bag the first man-eater. A short while later, the second man-eater was eliminated, it is reported that the 2nd lion was taken down by six bullets. (Unlike the lions we see today, kitambo lions used to be huge/ enormous and beastly).

In less than a year, the two lions murdered and devoured about 135 workers, based on Patterson's recount.

His best-selling book The Man-Eaters of Tsavo (1907), which was later fairly loosely filmed as Bwana Devil (1952) and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996), had details of his experiences.

As an act of vengeance Patterson kept the two man-eaters' skins as floor rugs for more than 25 years, turning them into a spiteful twist.

He eventually got rid of them in 1924 by giving the Chicago Field Museum the skins for US$5,000. They were then stuffed and put on display, where they are still there today.

Picture this: a studly stallion, surrounded by his adoring mares. Sounds glamorous, right? Wrong! Meet the "harem," where one alpha male reigns supreme. But lurking in the shadows are the bachelors, a ragtag group of young dudes waiting for their chance to dethrone the king.

Think of bachelors as a gym rat crew, constantly honing their skills, ready to pounce when the alpha weakens. They spar, wrestle, and strategize, forming unlikely bonds while building the strength and cunning needed for a royal rumble.

Now, why do these two groups hang out like uneasy neighbors? It's all about opportunity! Bachelors stay close, monitoring the harem for signs of weakness. Maybe the alpha gets injured, distracted by a juicy steak, or simply loses his mojo. BAM! It's bachelor brawl time! The strongest, smartest contender emerges, ready to claim the harem and his ultimate prize: endless snacks and royal treatment (okay, maybe not endless snacks, but you get the point).

This constant tension between harem and bachelors creates a social drama worthy of Shakespeare (minus the tights). It's a story of ambition, survival, and the ultimate question: who will be the next king of the castle? So, are you hooked? Want to dive deeper into the fascinating world of animal social structures? Call me my friend, and prepare to be amazed!

17/02/2024

Leopards are some of the most expert hunters in Africa, and although they are extremely elusive and difficult to locate, there are strategies to improve your chances. For example, pay attention to the trees. Perhaps you will see a leopard.

Leopards do not have the benefit of outnumbering their prey because they are solitary animals.

Furthermore, other predators like lions, African wild dogs, or hyenasโ€”who typically hunt in packsโ€”would rapidly overwhelm the leopard.

The leopard spends most of its time in trees, in contrast to other African predators like lions and cheetahs.

This not only lets the large, elusive cat feed in peace from other animals, but it also lets the leopard sleep in peace and quiet from other creatures.

Follow Brians Holiday Tours and Travel for packages that will take you near a leopard.

Have you ever seen zebras sparring?

Those black & white beauties aren't always fighting! โ€Their "sparring" sessions are actually playful practice matches.

Here's the lowdown:

> โ€Young zebras (and sometimes adults!) wrestle, nip, and chase - all in good fun!
๏ธ>These "playfights" hone their skills for future challenges, like dominance contests and predator defense.
>They also build trust and strengthen bonds within the herd.

Fun Fact - Zebras have an unspoken code to keep things playful, rarely injuring each other. โค๏ธ

So next time you see zebras seemingly clashing, remember it's more like a playful ballet preparing them for life's big stage!

Maasai Mara's Tropical Twist in the Doum Palm

The doum palm holds greatness in the hearts of the Maasai Mara. This old giant is more than just a lovely face:

During the dry season, elephants, baboons, and cheeky monkeys rely on its luscious orange fruit for survival.

Among its textured leaves and branches, birds and chameleons find cover and disguise.

Each ring tells stories of migrations and wildlife interactions.

See this magnificent behemoth the next time you're on safari and enjoy its tropical energy right in the middle of the savanna.

The dark lines running from a cheetah's eyes down to their muzzle make it easier to focus during hunts by reducing solar glare.

Before a chase, they sneeze to clear their nasal passages, increasing oxygen intake and potentially enhancing focus.

Cheetahs have a poor hunting success rate in spite of their amazing speed. Only roughly 50% of their chases are thought to end in a kill, and they may lose their prey to larger predators like lions and hyenas. -This is attributed to the fact that they are sprinters, not marathoners.

Their burst of speed is unmatched, but they tire quickly. Chases usually last less than a minute, relying on a quick surprise attack than endurance.

Their friendly greetings involve "head boops" -Cheetahs don't rub cheeks like lions, but greet each other with gentle head bumps and nuzzles, showing social bonding

Adding on, cheetahs have a unique high-pitched chirp used for greeting cubs, signaling contentment, and even during hunts.

Cheetah females are solitary, but grandmas stick together. Unlike males who form coalitions, females are independent hunters. However, grandmothers and their daughters sometimes form groups, likely for cooperative defense against predators.

Interestingly, evidence suggests the ancient Egyptian pharaoh kept a tamed cheetah, highlighting their cultural significance throughout history.

The southern ground hornbill.
These majestic birds, the largest species of hornbill, dominate the savanna with their commanding presence, bright colors, and complex social behavior.

Rarely do southern ground hornbills drink; instead, they get their moisture from food. Also, it might take a juvenile up to six years to develop all of the adult plumage.

Over and above, have been observed to follow ungulate herds, such as wildebeest, in order to scavenge insects that are disturbed by the movements of the animals.

As social birds, they strut their stuff in groups, trumpeting with authority as they hunt insects and small creatures. Their vibrant red throats (yellow in babies) add a pop of color to the dusty plains.

However, these impressive birds are vulnerable. Their vital savanna ecosystem is disrupted by habitat loss brought on by firewood gathering and agricultural expansion and are listed as "vulnerable" by the IUCN. -Habitat loss threatens their existence.

Luckily, protected areas like Maasai Mara offer hope. Keep an eye out for these fascinating creatures next time you're on safari โ€“ seeing them is a memory that will stay with you forever.
