Did you know?
- A handful of animals choose one partner for their entire lives.
- Many others are open to all takers.
- Some mate all year long, others are fertile only for a few hours.
- Some are highly selective and require one gender to perform elaborate rituals like dancing, strutting, and structure-building for the other gender to even give them a look.
- Others do it as frequently as possible with as many in their species as possible.
- More gruesomely, many animals murder after mating.
- Some others have to die in order to do it.
- Others do it literally until it kills them.

Fun Facts about Giraffes:
Over short distances, giraffes can run at speeds up to 35 mph.
The giraffe has only two gaits: pacing (moving both legs on the same side at the same time, like the camel) and galloping. When he goes into high gear, his front legs do the pushing while the back legs reach forward on the outside of the front legs. His head and neck move forward and back, pushing out with the front legs and rising almost straight up with the back legs, as a counterweight. He's the only mammal on Earth that uses his body this way. This unique style of locomotion lets him float along looking like he's in slow motion while achieving something like 35 miles an hour at maximum effort. The giraffe can cruise at about 30 mph for a couple of miles. However, scientists doing research on giraffes in the wild have learned not to chase a big giraffe too long, or he might become overly stressed and drop dead of a heart attack.
Giraffes only need to drink water once every couple of days.
They get most of their water from their plant-based diet—which is good considering their height makes the process of drinking difficult (and, if a lion happens upon a drinking giraffe, even dangerous). In order to reach water it has to splay its front legs and bend its knees before bending its neck to get its head down to ground level. Any wildlife animal in this position is very vulnerable.
Giraffes' tongues can be up to 20 inches long and are darkly colored
Even though a typical giraffe neck can stretch as long as six feet, the giraffe's tongue usually measures 18-20 inches long. The acacia tree's tasty leaves are protected by very sharp thorns. The giraffe's long tongue allows it to reach the highest, tastiest leaves while avoiding the sharp thorns. Some scientists postulate that the reason a giraffe’s tongue is a darkish color is to prevent sunburn, since it spends a large portion of the day outside of the animal’s mouth and exposed to the hot rays of the African sun.
