The United Green Movement Party recognizes that Youth unemployment poses a significant challenge in Kenya that could lead to economic stagnation and social unrest.
Even though Environmental degradation coupled with pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss exacerbates these issues it also presents opportunities for green job creation as we restore the environment.
By investing in sustainable practices, we can provide employment opportunities for young people while addressing environmental challenges and at the same time improving the economy.
Join us for the on 12.05.2024 at the Obunga Sports Complex in Kisumu where various including Victor Guya of Dragon Fly Tours, will be showcasing their creative innovations, on how they are transforming waste into profit while addressing pollution issues in Kisumu.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Liquid Fertilizer

1. Collect Organic Material
organic material

Gather organic waste, focusing on plant-based materials. Kitchen scraps (excluding meat and dairy products), yard waste like grass clippings and leaves, and even weeds can serve as the base for your fertilizer.

2. Prepare the Container
Place the organic material in the container, filling it up to about halfway. The size of the container will depend on the quantity of fertilizer you wish to make, but a standard 5-gallon bucket is a good start.

3. Add Water
Fill the container with water, covering the organic matter. Rainwater is ideal due to its purity, but tap water will suffice if left to sit for a day to allow chlorine to evaporate.

4. Fermentation Process
fermate organic waste
Seal the container with its lid, leaving it slightly ajar to allow gases to escape. Stir the mixture every few days to oxygenate it and facilitate the breakdown of materials. The fermentation process can take anywhere from two weeks to two months, depending on temperature and the materials used. You’ll know it’s ready when the mixture smells earthy and the solids have largely broken down.

5. Strain the Liquid
Once fermentation is complete, strain the liquid into another container, removing the solid waste. The resulting liquid is your concentrated liquid fertilizer.

6. Dilution and Application
Before applying the fertilizer to your plants, dilute it with water to prevent nutrient burn. A general ratio is 1 part fertilizer to 10 parts water, but this can vary based on the concentration of your mixture. Apply the diluted solution directly to the soil around your plants.

Benefits and Considerations

Eco-friendly: This method recycles waste into a valuable resource, reducing landfill use and chemical runoff.
Cost-effective: It utilizes readily available materials, saving money on commercial fertilizers.
Nutrient-rich: The final product is teeming with essential nutrient

Did you know?
Fireflies produce light in special organs in their abdomens by combining a chemical called luciferin, enzymes called luciferases, oxygen and the fuel for cellular work, ATP. Entomologists think they control their flashing by regulating how much oxygen goes to their light-producing organs.
Firefly light is usually intermittent, and flashes in patterns that are unique to each species. Each blinking pattern is an optical signal that helps fireflies find potential mates.
Firefly light may also serve as a defense mechanism that flashes a clear warning of the insect's unappetizing taste. The fact that even larvae are luminescent lends support to this theory.

These white foam blobs are produced by the immatures, or nymphs, of spittlebugs, small insects related to aphids and other true bugs, in the order Hemiptera. Spittlebug, Philaenus spumarius, is one of the most common species in the Midwest.
These small insects get their name from the globs of foamy “spit” they create along the stems of plants. They produce the frothy mixture by mixing air with fluid excretions, but not out their mouth, so it technically isn’t spit. The immature bugs feed face down on the stem, and as excess sap is excreted out the a**s, it is mixed with a substance secreted by epidermal glands that enhances surface viscosity and stabilizes the foam to make it last longer. This mixture is forced out of the abdomen under pressure and as it is mixed with air, it forms bubbles.
The foam serves a number of purposes, protecting the nymph from predators as well as providing insulation from temperature extremes and a low humidity environment so the tender nymph doesn’t desiccate.

World's largest floating University, World Odyssey, making its way to the Port of Mombasa on Friday, 9th February 2024.

Cruise vessel World Odyssey makes her third visit to the port of Mombasa docking at the port early friday morning.

Popularly known as “Semester at Sea” the World’s biggest floating campus, which operates academic voyage for students will be in Mombasa for six days to February 14th.

Aboard the ship is 763 passengers, of which 585 are students who will visit institutions of higher learning for educational tours, conduct excursions around the city and visit various wildlife parks during their stay.

Semester at Sea carries students around the world learning the histories of the countries they visit. The students are of mixed nationalities with one Kenyan student aboard. She sailed from India and will be visiting Mauritius as the next port of call.

The floating campus had an extensive visit to the country calling the port last year and in 2022. Port of Mombasa has recorded an increase in cruise vessel calls pointing to improved connectivity of the port and a hub for cruise tourism in Africa.

In Dunga Beach a canoe is used as a fishing voyage, the team leader, Mwasia mar Yie,
had to take some water into his mouth and spray it on the canoe, beseeching the
lake god for blessings. Besides, there were gifts given to the sea god. The first
fish to be caught was handed over to Mwasia to offer to the sea god. Using
strong-smelling bathing soaps while going fishing was considered taboo … probably
because fish could detect strong smelling substances and thus escape being caught.
These practical and religious influences on the fishing culture gave the Luo people
a sense of order and routine among their lives.
