Facts about the Giraffe’s Tongues:
• It is very long: About half a meter (18-21.7 inches)
• It is prehensile: Literally like a human hand or elephant trunk or monkey tail and uses it to grab its food due to its muscular control
• Colour: Giraffe’s tongues have different colors from black, grey purple or pinkish. However, the protruding black part is due to a density of melanin color pigments believed to provide extra UV protection and prevent it from sunburns.
• Added protection: Since they feed on thorny acacia, they are prone to pricks by thorns; therefore they secret a special sticky thick saliva with antiseptic properties which hel;ps them heal quickly when priced before it gets infected.
• They use their tongues to clean their ears and pick their noses
• Male Giraffes use their tongues to determine if the female is ovulating (Ideally looking for a prospective mate by tasting their urine)
NB/ Giraffes spends about 12 hours feeding and can take up to 30kgs a day. Their height is an advantage to them as they easily access acacia leaves with no competition. Acacia leaves is also a source of water as they have high moisture contents; thus giraffes have no need to always go to rivers to drink water which makes them susceptible to predators.
