CHALLENGES/PROBLEMS IN WASINI ISLAND.

Wasini Island is a great case study on how the Waste Free in '23 community empowerment strategy can have an immediate positive impact on the environment as well as people's lives.

a.)Lots of uncollected plastic trash scattered everywhere in Wasini Island which damages our environment.

b.)There are not tap waters or borewhole water in Wasini Island,we wait till rain season to harvest water from the rain, stored in the tanks or water catchments provided by the government. Not all private homes are access to nice panels and gutters for storing water.
The community uses rain water from the roof of buildings for their fresh water supply.

c.) Neither exists there a public sewer system. Deep holes are hacked in the coral rock until the groundwater is reached for building a pit latrine. Those pits are washed out twice a day across through the coralrock by the high tide of the sea.

d.) Rubbish is not publicly collected although a NGO made a short-lived effort to improve this system. So people are giving their edible garbage to the goats, putting the remains in a compostpit and burn the non-biodegradable left overs.
However, at the coast some people tend to dispose the non-biodegradable remains directly in the sea, resulting in floatsam - mainly items of plastic and rubber, but also big derooted wooden trunks and their branches- at the lower end with high tide.

e.) The inland lagoon near Nyuma Maji in the southern half of the island and the mangrove forests marshes entrap large quantities of flotsam floating in on the tides.

The local communities who have long relied on coastal forests for things like food and construction materials.
A variety of conservation efforts in and around the Island emphasize involving communities in reducing pressure on these coastal forests.

Join us today for beach cleanup as volunteers to participate on conserving our mangrove ecosystems.
Mangrove conservation and management by the local communities. It is important to ensure that the local people are involved in conducting mangrove restoration and protection activities and that they benefit from the sustainable utilization of mangrove resources.

Plastic pollution is now a worldwide phenomenon affecting all marine ecosystems.
Mangroves provide many important ecosystem services to coastal communities, but are nevertheless disappearing because of a multitude of man-made threats.

PLASTIC WASTE IN WASINI ISLAND,MKUNGUNI MANGROVE FOREST.

Plastic Waste washed ashore the Mkunguni beach along the Mkunguni Mangrove forest a fertile breeding habitat for fish and turtles.
Mangroves are home to many critters.
Uncollected waste can contaminate soil and water sources, leading to environmental degradation and potentially affecting ecosystems and wildlife.
Only 9% of that waste plastic is recycled and 12% is incinerated. The remaining 79% ends up in landfills or in the environment, where they will stay forever in one form or another, as plastic does not decompose.

04/02/2024

The impact of plastic waste is however poorly known, even though the amount of plastic litter is the largest in the region where mangroves are declining the fastest. However, mangrove stands are likely to deteriorate eventually if plastic continues to accumulate.

The Impact of Macro Plastics on Mangrove Growth.

-Plastic is accumulating in mangrove forests worldwide, but impacts remain unclear.

-Plastic waste was frequently observed to cover 50% of the forest floor.
-Partial plastic cover of mangrove root zones induces extreme aerial root growth.
-Complete plastic cover of root zones causes tree death.
