Large and powerful-looking, with a long, white-tipped tail. General colour tan, with black-and-brown rosettes (not spots) on back and sides, and spots on face and lower limbs. Melanistic individuals occur, especially in highlands. Mostly nocturnal and solitary, except when a female has young. An opportunistic hunter, hunts by day if prey is available. Feeds on gazelles, impala, warthogs, hares, baboons, monkeys and birds. Often carries prey high into trees to feed.
