Wasini Island lies off the coast of southeast Kenya 3 kilometres in the Indian Ocean, 75 kilometres south of Mombasa, and 3 kilometres opposite the harbour of the village of Shimoni. It is approximately 7 kilometres long and 3 kilometres across. The name "wasini mpunguti" came from the early inhabitants. The island has only footpaths of sharp old coral or sand. There are no cars, carts or bicycles. Cargo is transported by foot or by a wheelbarrow with a solid tyre. Transport is over the paths, or via the beaches, mainly consisting of coral and only passable with low tide, or by boat over the sea. Before 1963, in the British colonial time, there was an airstrip in the lagoon situated longitudinally south on the island; only small pieces of tarmac now remain.

It's ripe with the ingredients required for a perfect backpacker beachside hideaway: it has that sit-under-a-mango-tree-and-do-nothing-all-day vibe, a coastline licked with pockets of white sand and Kisite Marine National Park, the most gorgeous snorkelling reef on the coast. In fact, the only things it doesn’t have are regular electricity, banana-pancake traveller cafes, backpacker hostels and cars, and it’s all the better for it.

Pass By: Shimoni, Coast Province

You will be picked early in the morning at 7:30 am from your hotel and drive to Ukunda town and catch the Mombasa lunga lunga road to shimoni.

Here you will stop and pay for the marine park fee. At 9:00 am, you will bord an Arabic dhow which will cruise you to kisite Marine Park. But on the way the captain and his cruise will pull up their socks so that you can see the friendly dolphins on the way.

This is not guarantee but its 95%.Incase you don’t find them on the way, you can spot them at the snorkeling area and have fun with them.

When you reach at Kisite Marine Park, this is the place where you are going to snorkel or dive. For those ones who do not know how to swim, there is enough water taxi and a water guide (they will never be alone!) they should not worry.
