Today, we honour the people working to better protect 𝗗𝗼𝗹𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗻𝘀 in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). Kenya Marine Mammal Research and Conservation shows how citizen science can raise awareness, involve the public in scientific research, and support conservation efforts.
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱:
• More than 1,000 sightings of 11 small marine mammal species.
• The most reported nearshore species are the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin and the Indian Ocean humpback dolphin.
• Offshore sightings include killer whales, short-finned pilot whales, and long-snouted spinner dolphins.
You can help with conservation by joining an ocean adventure with Seas4Life. You’ll learn from WIO experts about these incredible creatures. 🌍🐬

Today we received a heartfelt message from Simon Lewis who is an RAF pilot and one of our favourite Seas4life client .He encountered a beautiful green turtle stranded off Ascension Island in the Atlantic.
Too heavy for him to move alone, he called for help, and Ascension Island Conservation answered.
Together, they lifted her with care, giving her space to swim away. Estimated to be 60 years old, this majestic creature reminds us of the resilience and beauty of our oceans.
Simon's story is a true Easter 'Turtle' tale, warming hearts and inspiring hope. 🐢💙

Lamu Archipelago situated in the Indian Ocean off the North Coast of Kenya, epitomises the charm of Swahili culture. The largest islands are Pate, Manda and Lamu. The smaller islands include Kiwayu and Manda Toto, all with an outstanding natural beauty, archaeological finds and steeped in history. The Arabs called them the ‘Seven Isles of Eryaya’, while sailors called them a welcome port of call when en route to, or from, India.
Lamu has traded for the best part of 1000 years, first under the nominal control of various Arabic magnates, then under the Portuguese, and finally at the behest of the Sultanate of Zanzibar, before eventually achieving independence, along with the rest of Kenya, in 1963.
There is no better way to explore Lamu island than by sea on your exclusive luxury 60ft Dhow. The image of the iconic triangular sail of the traditional Swahili dhow clipping along the East African coast has changed little over the past 2000 years—a scene that takes you back to when Persian and Oman traders travelled the coasts of East Africa as early as the 6th Century. And now it’s your turn to taste the rich history of this fascinating culture.
Come with us and explore LAMU 🇰🇪⛵️

Shark Awareness Day
Shark Awareness Day is marked yearly on 14th July each year to raise awareness about shark conservation and promote understanding of these magnificent cartilaginous fish. It is important to dispel myths about sharks and to alert many on the importance that sharks play in the ocean eco system.
Sharks are among the oldest living lineage of species in the ocean, with fossil records dating back at least 420 million years ago. Modern-day sharks have been around for about 100 million years, predating the dinosaurs and even surviving them in the last major extinction event in the Miocene.
Over the past 50 years shark numbers have declined by more than 70%, with an associated loss to the biodiversity and ocean ecosystems. Sharks play an integral role in keeping our ocean healthy and ecosystems intact. Sharks eat the sick, the weak and the slow, maintaining other species populations, controlling disease and shaping healthier genes in their prey populations. They are an apex predator, at the top of the food chain, and have been in balance with the ocean, so as not to eat too much – this balance is being left unchecked by illegal, uncontrolled fishing of sharks mainly for their fins.
Thanks to organisations like Coastal Oceans Research and Development in the Indian Ocean (CORDIO), who are a leading non-governmental research and conservation initiative based in Mombasa, Kenya, dedicated to marine and coastal ecosystems in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO). Part of the amazing work they do is building awareness about sharks in the local communities.

We LOVE sea turtles at Seas4Life. June 16th is dedicated to raising awareness about these magnificent creatures and the need for their conservation. The day emphasises the need to protect their habitats, mitigate human-induced threats, and inspire collective action to protect these gentle ocean dwellers. The theme this year is to ‘Preserve our Ocean Guardians’ as sea turtles play a crucial role in the balance of marine ecosystems. Read our latest ‘Sea Journal’ to learn more and ways to support these ‘Ocean Guardians’ on World Seas Turtle Day…https://www.seas4life.com/sea-journals/world-sea-turtle-blog-16th-june-2023 Marine Conservation partners: @oliveridleyproject @lamcot_lamu @baharihai @oceansalivekenya @localoceanco @oceansole #WorldSeaTurtleDay #OceanGuardians #Seaturtles #oceanlover #oceanlove #lovetheocean #passionforthesea #conservation #ocean #seasadventures #marinelife #marineanimals #oceanodyssey #natgeo #natgeowild #blueplanet #underthesea #turtlelove #sea #savetheturtles #seaturtleconservation
Happy World Turtle Day!!
Take a moment to appreciate these amazing creatures, who have survived the test of time. May 23rd is a day to celebrate all the turtles, whether on land, sea or freshwater. Here are 10 amazing facts:
1. There are 7 species of sea turtles of which 5 can be found in East Africa;
Green
Hawksbill
Olive Ridley
Loggerheads
Leatherbacks
All are threatened with extinction
2. Turtles have beak like mouths made from keratin to grasp their food.
3.Turtle shells are made of over 50 bones fused together - so they are literally wearing their bones on the outside. They have light spongy bones that help them float.
4. The first few years of a sea turtles’ life are known as their lost years - that is because the time between when the hatchlings emerge until they return to coastal shallow waters to forage is incredibly difficult to study. They spend their time at sea (up to 20 years) and it remains a mystery.
5.They vary greatly in size - the smallest Kemps Ridley measure 70cm and weighs up to 40kg to the leatherback, which can reach up to 180cm long and weighs 500kg.
6. Out of 1000 sea turtle hatchlings, maybe one or two makes it to adulthood due to the long time it takes for them to reach maturity and the many dangers they face from marine predators.
7. Female leatherbacks make strange noises when nesting, which sounds like a human belch.
8. Turtles can look as if they are crying but they are actually getting rid of excess salt from swallowing salty seawater through a salt excretion gland near the corner of their eye.
9. Sea turtles are known to migrate huge distances - the longest known record for a female leather back is 13,000 miles over 647 days from Indonesia to the west coast of America. This is why they are tagged and tracked
10. Females return to the same beach they hatched on to lay their own eggs and bury them in sand ’nests. Sea turtles have an amazing ability to navigate using their
