Hop on a speedboat at Forodhani in Stone Town and set off for the historic and picturesque Prison Island. As you make your way there, enjoy the stunning clear blue waters of the ocean and take in the beautiful views of the island as you approach. Once on the island, take a scenic walk and immerse yourself in its rich history.

In the 19th century, Prison Island was used as a "quarantine station" to isolate individuals suspected of carrying diseases like cholera and smallpox, particularly from Zanzibar's busy port.

The island gained notoriety in the late 1800s when Sultan Barghash of Zanzibar established a prison here, originally to hold rebellious slaves and criminals. The island's isolation made it an effective place of confinement, and it continued to serve as a prison under British rule (from 1890 to 1963), housing some of the most notorious prisoners of the time.

After the Zanzibar Revolution of 1964, which led to the overthrow of the Sultanate, the island's prison function was abandoned. It gradually evolved into a tourist destination, offering visitors the chance to explore the remnants of its old prison structures and meet its famous giant tortoises.

The Aldabra giant tortoises, some of the largest tortoises in the world, are a major highlight of the island. Known for their impressive size and remarkable lifespan, these tortoises often live to be over 150 years old, with some individuals reaching more than 200 years. Fun fact: the numbers on the tortoise shells are their ages.

I visited the Nguuni Animal Sanctuary, where I enjoyed a peaceful nature walk. I watched a tortoise move slowly along its path and even posed for a picture with the giraffes. It was a relaxing and memorable experience. 馃嚢馃嚜 #
