My last post was about a gentleman’s fight, todays is quite brutal
Oryx’s engage in some of the most brutal fights I have seen in the wild, stabbing each other repeatedly as if they don’t feel pain.
We recently came upon this pair and at first they seemed to be sizing up each other then in the blink of an eye they were raising dust in a serious fight.
One tripped and was pinned to the ground and pushed into some acacia thorns where he laid down in total submission as the winner kept a close eye on him.
It didn’t take long for Oxpeckers to find the free flowing blood usually packaged in ticks.

Their horn is their dilemma. Let us not let them slip into extinction

Of the 28,000 rhinos left in the world, about 2500 which is almost 10% of the world total are in Kenya.
At the beginning of the 20th century there were 500,000 rhinos in the world

The first Saturday of every September is celebrated as International Vulture Awareness Day. Vultures are an ecologically important group of birds that play critical roles in maintaining the health of ecosystems. Unfortunately they face a wide range of threats in many areas that they occur. Populations of many species are under pressure and some species are facing extinction.
In Kenya, six out of the eight vulture species are classified as Threatened, while four are considered Critically Endangered.

On this World Elephant Day let’s not forget that each elephant is an individual and has their own personality. They are intelligent, compassionate, loving and family oriented. They celebrate births and they mourn their dead.

Elephants are not commodities.

An Oxpecker will typically consume more than 300 ticks, over 1,000 larvae other parasites that infest large mammals like the black rhinoceros, African buffalo and others in a day. They are also known to warn their host when danger approaches.
Such symbiotic relationships in the wild are a fascinating aspect of nature. The fact that such drastically different species can work together for mutual benefit is one of the wonders of the natural world.

Mount Kenya side-striped chameleon is a Kenyan endemic of the alpine zone 3000 to 4000 meters above sea level where temperatures regularly drop below zero and it may snow at night.
Hard to imagine a more difficult environment as a reptile.

HAPPY WORLD GIRAFFE DAY!!!

World giraffe day is celebrated every 21st day of June, the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere to create awareness and raise support towards the worlds tallest land mammal which is quietly slipping towards extinction
Kenya’s amazing diversity is clearly shown in the varied colors and patterns of our giraffes, every park and reserve has its own local variation of this magnificent animal
Previously all giraffes were classified as one species with nine subspecies, occurring throughout 21 countries in Africa. However, new research shows that there are now four distinct species of giraffe with seven subspecies, of which three occur in Kenya.
Allow me to bombard you with photos from various parks in Kenya

Golden breasted starling definitely a WoW bird😱🤩
Uncommon but widespread in dry habitats, shy and not easy to photograph
They feed primarily on insects with termites being a favorite. They catch the termites by opening their ground tunnels with rapid flicks of their bill.

The world is in a water crisis, accelerated by climate change and conflicts.
World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 to spread awareness about the importance of water and ways to conserve it. The theme for World Water Day 2023 is 'Accelerate Change'.

For every drop of water we waste, we must know that somewhere on earth someone is desperately looking for a drop of water

Each day is born with a sunrise
and ends in a sunset, the same way we
open our eyes to see the light,
and close them to hear the dark.
You have no control over
how your story begins or ends.
But by now, you should know that
all things have an ending.
Every spark returns to darkness.
Every sound returns to silence.
And every flower returns to sleep with the earth.
The journey of the sun and moon is predictable.
But yours, is your ultimate ART.

In the midst of the current drought, the cycle of life continues in Tsavo National park, a real struggle this time with the current drought showing no sign of relenting
We were very lucky to see not one but many Hirollas!! along with other wonderful animals
Hirolla are critically endangered- the highest risk category with less than 500 left in the wild from about 15,000 in the 1970’s. A result of Poaching, disease, habitat destruction and a severe drought in the 1980s have all played a part to the loss of this elegant species.
Enjoy this lovely images from the theatre in the wild
