The matriarchal system in elephant society is fascinating! Did you know that matriarchs are not self-appointed leaders?

Their position is earned through the respect of their herd because they have proven over the years that they can be trusted to make wise decisions in times of crisis.

Matriarchs embody (are the keepers of) untold amounts of social, spatial and environmental knowledge which helps them guide their herds to essential resources like water, food, and safety.

Over time, matriarchs become vital “repositories” of knowledge, holding the history and ecological wisdom that keep the herd thriving.

This arrangement emphasises their significant role not only as leaders, but as central holders of their herd’s history and knowledge.
