*RAGIA FOREST BATH & WATERFALL CHASE + MAU MAU CAVES*

Ragia circuit starts at Sasumua Dam through China camp gate. There is a great view of elephant hill from Sasumua dam just before getting into the bamboo trail.
The terrain first proceeds gently through a Forest road and after a while takes a turn into a thick bamboo Forest as the terrain becomes gradually steep down the valley to the pipeline leave way.
As we zigzag down the trail, you can hear the massive gushing of water for a moment before the magnificent misty falls is in view.
The waters are super clear and blue.
Adrenaline lovers get to take a dive into the cold waters as the majority team Wapenzi watazamaji enjoy the ambience and stick up on pictorial footage.
From the first waterfall, the trail leads to a sharp descent that leads back to the pipeline way which leads to a cascading waterfall and the famous Mau Mau cave where Mau Mau generals Field marshal Dedan Kimathi and general China used to hide.
The views here are magical to say the least!
From the waterfall, the trail leads you out of the forest through the thick bamboo forest back to Sasumua Dam.
We'll be going back this weekend as well so get in touch with us and let's go collect moments together!

I have a friend, that if you told him one day he'll have developed serious interest in backpacking almost every weekend, he'd probably check you into the nearest mental facility before you start picking plastic bags or something!
Ladies and gentlemen, i am the friend!
Nowadays it's a glorious testimony how i received the awakening and accepted the trails as my personal therapist and saviour!
In classic Campnasi Travels style,
We were up early enough to shame the earliest bird.
2:30am.Up and making the necessary preparations for the big day ahead!
By 4:30am we had left the madness that is Nairobi city for Gatango Forest in the Aberdares.
By 8am we were somewhere around the forest location because Google maps shamelessly told us we had arrived at our destination in the middle of the road.
Direction to the starting point was not something you'd figure out from verbal explanation, we had to summon a guide to come meet us and let me tell you maina!
We took uncountable turns driving through narrow paths and kept going deep into the remote villages. The place was so Remote it could actually change channelsπŸ˜‚ (pun intended)
Finally we started at Mucharage Forest Rangers Post towards Mathioya, went past the expansive Nyayo Tea Zone.
Later we exit the tea zone and into the Forest.
The calm and picturesque forest is spotted with indigenous trees, birds and Bamboo trees.
Occasional elephant dung and tracks along the way constantly reminded us that we were privileged enough to share moments in the habitats of nature's finest creations.
Soon the waterfall was in view from a distance through the Bamboo trees.
We arrived at the magnificent misty falls rising up to around 70 metres.
We sat down and had a snack break as some of the daring ones decided to plunge into the icy waters and rekindle childhood memories playing away in the waterfall pool.
We later cross over the river by the pool up a very steep climb from the falls re-entering the bamboo forest back to our starting point at the Rangers Post.
The experience was as usual one for the books, special and with great moments all through!
We set off back to Nairobi and in classic Campnasi Travels style, we dropped everyone back home with high spirits looking forward to the next trail.
Where to next?
Let us know what's on your bucket list this year

SLEEPING WARRIOR + UGALI HILL HIKE EXPERIENCE

Sleeping Warrior; the name sent jitters to one's entire body every time you think about it before D-day.
This was the exact same thing that Lucy, a first timer and friend that decided to tag along on this hike on the 29th April, 2022, thought; with much prodding and encouragement, she accepted the challenge.

We left Nairobi at 0510 hrs, taking Waiyaki way on this chilly morning. It had been raining heavily in some parts of Nairobi the last 2 days and a call to our guides to confirm the weather situation confirmed that it was raining though not a lot.
It was really foggy as we passed Kikuyu so we waited with bated breath to see how the weather that day would unfold as we passed Kijabe.
It was a relief to see clear and partly cloudy skies with the sun peeking at us occasionally.

We picked up our Rangers at around the Kikopey area as we took some tea to warm our bodies. A quick warm up at the start point, almost 10 km off the main highway and off we were feasting our eyes on the visibly nearby Sleeping Warrior hill before us.

As we started our climb of the first section, behind us we were treated with beautiful sceneries of Lake Elementaita jutting into the land below.
This made us want to get to the top of the bust of the Warrior to get a better view. It interesting to note that the head of the Warrior and his bust are in 2 different conservancies, Soysambu and Nakuru, respectively.

It was windy at the top of the bust of the sleeping warrior but it made for a refreshing break as we took photos and enjoyed looking at animals descending into the crater below as they grazed. We halfway went around the horseshoe-shaped crater and descended for an almost 2 km walk to Ugali hill. We had a snack break to recharge and re-energize before taking on the imposing hill before us.

One foot in front of the other, we kept encouraging each other and two of our star hikers for the day, Waithira and Lucy, at the top of Ugali hill and jubilant at the possibility of what more could be achieved, along with the rest of the team, decided that Ugali Saucer hill could be tackled but another time.

The descent from Ugali hill was slow; it is good to do so lest you end up with bruises or a sprained ankle. All safe and sound at the bottom of the hill, we headed for the hot springs along the shores of the inviting Lake that had appeared welcoming from a distance. The feeling of the warm to hot spring water on the feet is rejuvenating beyond the explanation of words.

Feelings of nostalgia of our encounter at the top of the sleeping warrior started to kick in as we thought of leaving back for Nairobi; in our hearts we promised ourselves to be back here to tackle all three hills lying side by side, a view we enjoyed as we shuttled back to Nairobi.

Looking forward to an exciting experience on our next hike to Gatango Forest Bath plus waterfall chase next weekend as well!
Peace and love!

HUMILITY ABOVE SEA LEVEL!!!

They say that the man who goes down Mount Kenya is not the same one who went up on it. The mountain changes you, beats out your hubris and your pride. You really look at yourself in ways you haven’t done before. It is a spiritual place. It will chew you up, punish you but you will love the mountain for it.

Now, anyone who knows me knows that am an ardent runner and fitness enthusiast who has done one or two half marathons across the city! I was however warned not to equate running to climbing a mountain. I was prepared to take on the highest peak in Kenya, from a new route!

*Day 1*

15th April 2022 was the D-Day and day one of the journey towards conquering Mount Kenya. Campnasi Travels plus a team of enthusiastic hikers left the relatively comfortable and ordered chaos of Nairobi at around 0800 hrs headed towards Chogoria Gate at Mount Kenya National Game Reserve located just after Chogoria town; complete with a gate and KWS office erected at an altitude of 2950m. The team was full of and enthusiasm, with pregnant expectations of conquering a mountain, a notion that we would later understand was mere overestimation whispered to us by our egos.
On board we had a class 8 boy, probably around 13years of age. This was his fourth time summiting Mount Kenya! Most of the first timers on board were our Chinese brothers and sisters, including a 60+ year old lady!
Deep down i knew we were going to have interesting stories once back!

We arrived at Sirimon gate at around 2pm and we met our guide Captain John and his team of 18 porters and chefs.
First agenda lunch.
We were welcomed with a heavy lunch fit for a king right at a hotel in Chogoria Town.
I had been told that as you climb the mountain, you eat like a king, walk like a slave and sleep like a pauper.
The Chinese sure do know how to eat healthy and it shows in their physique and physical appearance; next time you encounter them pay attention to what they eat and let me know.

Immediately after eating we started preparing for the initial ascent which would see us trek for a few kilometers from the Sirimon gate all the way to the first camping site at the Meru Bandas for dinner and overnight stay. The porters had already reached at the camp a few hours before us.
After a quick clean up and change of clothes we sat down for some tea and snacks and alter a sumptuous dinner prepared by our chef; living up to the mantra of being fed like kings. With nothing much to do, most of us opted to catch forty winks immediately as they looked forward to day 2. A few of us sat by the fire as we gazed into oblivion lost deep in wonderland!

*Day 2*
(Meru Bandas - Road Head Camp)

Day two was a 3hour trek from Meru Bandas Camp to the second campsite called Road Head for a rest before heading to the scenic Nithi Falls and finally to Mintos camp by the shores of Lake Ellis.
The mountain was already making its mark on our psyche, challenging us, almost taunting us and establishing its dominance of us mere mortals. The hike was scenic through the moorland as we took turns to take pictures along the route and encourage each other trying to ignore the majestic peaks, peering at us from a distance daring us to approach.
Everyone was excited and rearing to have a go at the mountain.
The way the hike is planned out is meant to have the hikers rest at certain points so as to acclimatize and avoid extreme cases of altitude sickness. We trekked along a graded marram road crossed a bridge right after leaving Road head campsite and on to the dazzling Nithi Falls (a steady descent down). I have to profess my love for waterfalls at this point and let me say that this one left an impression as well.
After savouring the beauty of the waterfall, we went up to Maumau Caves (a sight to behold as well), then embarked on a trail leading to Lake Ellis (third largest lake on Mt. Kenya after Lake Alice and Michaelson) about two kilometers from the Nithi Falls. We walked back to the junction point had a 15-minute snack break and headed towards Lake Ellis 3 Kilometers away; the trail is not torturous.
At the tail end of the trail where I prefer to be was the 60 year old super mom blazing the trail with his son. In my company as well was Morgan the class eight pupil who amazed me with his resilience, ease of hiking and i wondered if I could achieve this feat at his age.
By the time we got to the camp, the weather was threatening to pour its wrath on us, but never got to execute the threat.
The Chefs outdid themselves as usual, and we sat by the fire as we chatted into the night, occasionally breaking into Chinese songs and dances as they enjoyed a bonfire, whiling away the evening. The whole team connected on a family level, just how we like it!

It was super cold at night! I could only equate the temperatures to the ones we used to write in our compositions and Inshas back in primary school. Baridi shadidi plus kutetemeka mithili ya tawi kwenye kipupwe! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ (Can watoto wa CBS system even??)

*Day 3*
(Road Head Camp - Mintos Camp)

We Left Lake Elis camp at 0745 hrs for a 10 km walk passing gorges and valleys with breathtaking views. Behind us you could see a majestic Table Mountain, Mugi hill (the team was too tired to try a 3hour excursion up there and decided to nap in the afternoon), as well as the beautiful Lake Elis.
God must have taken His sweet time up here. You only have to be here to understand. I hope the pictures do justice to the narration. Cloud cover prohibited us from enjoying full view of the majestic rocks along the trail to Mintos camp.
A drizzle threatened and the hike party hastened. A short while after we arrived at around 1405 hrs, then it started pouring intermittently for about two hours. A few of the porters were stuck behind trapped by the rain. Captain, the lead guide and a few others went back for a rescue mission.

*Day 4*
(Summit - Shipton - Sirimon)

On this night, it was extra chilly!
We had to wake up at 0200hrs have a night snack at 0230hrs and leave for the summit in time to catch the beautiful sunrise! We left Mintos Camp at 0310hrs and walked in the classical queue format. Our headlamps helping us navigate through the dark silent night between the rocky paths with streams flowing through them.
After what seemed like eternity, we inched closer to point Lenana. At this point you're normally beat down properly that you prefer to stay quiet to preserve that energy for better use like worry if you'll ever live to tell the tale!
And finally, ladies and gentlemen, by 0830hrs, we gracefully set foot on the roof of Kenya! There was a sudden excitement rush and everyone momentarily forgot the treacherous torture we had undergone to get to that point!
The scene that we met was one of breathtaking beauty and utter awesomeness. Mount Kenya was towering above puffy white clouds with Mount Kenya’s highest peaks, Nelion and Batian jealously beckoning us to continue and enjoy better views they would offer at the roof of Kenya.
We spent a few more minutes taking in the view and stocking up on our social footage, as we hugged and patted each other for successfully making it to the top together in one peace!
The journey back was crazy with some longing for unrealistic favours like KWS installing a Zip line from the peak all the way to the Shiptons camp to make the descent quicker and easier πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚.
Investors, that's a million-dollar idea, no? Okay then. 😏.
We headed down to Shiptons camp for breakfast and a power nap. We had our last meal on the mountain around 1pm before we bid our well wishes to the mountain we had just conquered.
The descent was rather long and super tiresome as we walked through the breathtaking Mackinders Valley,
The stretch was so long it reminded me of the Israelites exodus to Canaan.
A few members actually almost got frustrated over the unending stretch but that's what long and frustrating treks do to you mentally. The descending trek back from Point Lenana to Shiptons, Old Moses camp and Sirimon Gate took us about 12 hours!
Psychologists in the house, does exhaustion have anything to do with being grumpy and semi mad? πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
By the time we got to the pickup point, the pacesetters were already waiting for us and ready to get back on road to Nairobi. We organized ourselves into our respective Vans and off to Nairobi we went!
As everyone sunk into their seats and passed out softly in deep slumber, i smiled at heart with contentment and pride on our achievement.
I thanked God that no one got injured or was harmed as I silently prayed to God among other silent prayers that I asked of God.
I want to go up there again to thank him for answering them on another trip!
As a travel team leader, it's always our goal to achieve the type of connection we had all through, the success and an overall awesome experience!
In classic Campnasi Travels style, we dropped everyone at their respective homes because why not?
It was around 4:30am when we had dropped off the last guys and headed home with loads of sleep and stories as well!

Next stop?
Definitely doing more summits to the great mountain again and again!
Peace and Love!

May the goodness of Good Friday surround you all year long and bless your life with happiness and peace!

30/03/2022

Hiking is not escapism; it's realism. The people who choose to spend time outdoors are not running away from anything; we are returning to where we belong. The journey home was set for 27th March 2022,the highest peak in the Aberdares.

Severally, I’d come across reviews that the views atop Oldoinyo LeSatima an oxygen starved 4001-metre high hill in the Aberdares are worth the effort of waking at 2:30 a.m.
The trek was notoriously noted to be very tough according to most reviews.,and that alone gave me a pinch of anxiety.

As the service providers, We were up as early to ensure the whole team was ready and set to leave by 4:30am. We were on the road by 0440 hrs and arrived at the Shamata Gate by 0900 hrs. We were a large group so it took a while to clear from the KWS office and made it to the startpoint of the hike by 0940 hrs. I could sense the urgency of the team to start the hike so our routine hike brief and warm-up exercise were brief and to the point.

Weather forecast and a call to a self drive hiker who had camped there the night before confirmed it was raining cats and dogs and all pets possible! The situation on the ground was however looking very favourable for us, not too wet, not too dry.

We had two guides Alex and James who together with team leaders Isaac & Newton led the team to an energetic start.
Soon, in typical large group fashion, the group has split into 3 sets. The pacesetters surged forward followed closely by the middle paced hikers, then the slow hikers came after. Coordination and communication was made easier by the walkie talkies the team leaders had.

The trails boasted very Scenic views that enabled one to better see the world, to notice fine aspects invisible from an a distance, the most basic things we miss. Seeing life at a pace at which you can actually observe nuance, the speed of stepping, the beautiful inspiring texture of β€œplain” reality becomes visibleβ€”God smiling in the detail.

Altitude sickness came out to play sooner than later. Team leader Isaac was forced to make a turn around back to start point after a few hikers got overwhelmed with the altitude.
The majority proceeded to trod through the rock formations and moorland in pursuit of summit.

In 3hours, the first team was at the summit! 4001 metres above sea level and the clouds occasionally floated low covering the whole summit point in dense fog as the chilling winds and cold descended on us heavy! After a short snack break and summit photoshoot, the team once again spread out into 3 sets for the descent.

The descent was much quicker and the first team got to the start point in just 2 hours. By 5pm, the last group was back to the van and ready to set off back to Nairobi with experience, stories and beautiful moments collected after an awesome climb.

The trail will only provide if you accept its offer. All of it. You must leave home. You must be broken. It will cost you your entire life as you know it. And then, and only then, can you receive. What you receive will be far greater than anything you had or anything you lost. It will change you. It might even heal you. All in all, it's always important to Hike your own Hike!

See you next as we take on Mount Kenya from 15th April!

NJIGARI BAMBOO FOREST HIKE REVIEW

Njigari forest; not many people know about this unique bamboo forest in Othaya buffered by a remnant of the famous Nyayo tea zone. A beautiful gem indeed.

We left Nairobi at 0530 hrs, had a stopover for breakfast at Muranga and were at Njigari forest station by 0930 hrs. A short brief by our Ranger and guide and some stretches to warm the muscles saw the hiking party start the hike by 1000 hrs.

The first 2 or so kilometers were a steady climb through inviting green grass in a forested area with aged trees, some of which I gathered could be between 50 & 100 yrs old. The Bamboo forest is enclosed and protected by an electric fence.

If you're keen enough, you will note that the humming, chirping and whistles of birds die out as soon as you get into the Bamboo forest. I'm not sure which birds if any inhabit bamboo forests but I want to venture into this forest with my friend , purposely for birdwatching as we have another go at Njigari next time around.

You encounter the first waterfall after descending through a section of large and tall bamboo trees. Our guides Cleophas & Muriithi were awesome and witty ensuring that no one got lost; their trail of ribbons ensured that we all stayed in the trail.

Tsetse flies will keep you busy that you'll forget the challenging ascent from the first waterfall to the next (taller and awesome than the first one) and the tricky descent into this water feature; lady luck smiled on us, the weather was perfect for this hike. I can only imagine what it would look like to hike here when it has rained properly.

The trail to the start point involves doubling back to a point where you turn off to the first waterfall, then Veer off and out of the bamboo forest outskirt to the KFS station office.

A plus for this forest hike is that the canopy provided by the forest shields one from getting their energy from being sapped off completely by the scorching sun.

Join us as we take on the mighty Dragons Teeth (Oldoinyo LeSatima) on our next trail as we venture back to the Aberdares for what I think may have drove my friend Chen to seek out this imposing hill christened "dragon's teeth" that sound like a title of a Bruce Lee movie 😁

How old were you when you discovered all pandas are born female??
Males are only created if a panda receives a fright in its first 48 hours of life!! (Weird right?)πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
The biggest threat to pandas is habitat loss, considering their diet is made of 99% Bamboo!
Interested facts yes?
Well, this weekend we take on the Beautiful Njigari Bamboo Forest which also boasts of 3 magnificent waterfalls!
(Thuti falls, Gura Falls, Gitonga Falls.)
Did you know??
A Bamboo tree takes five years to grow!
It actually doesn't break through the ground for 5 years!
And once it does, it grows to 90 feet tall in just 5 weeks!
Amazing right?
Anybody with ideas on how bamboo trees are planted?
We could actually do this as a good will cause even though I don't think we have Bears and Pandas in our country.
If you'd love to join like minded individuals on a bamboo forest bath,

Join us next weekend (Sunday) as we tick Njigari Bamboo off our bucket list 😎

If at all there was anything we had to our advantage on this hike, it was the weather; a chilly misty morning with clear sunny skies and an overcast chilly, windy afternoon. The Master Architect made all this as well as the imposing hills and awesome vegetation PERFECT, FANTABULOUS, AWESOME etc. as my friend Migok and the rest hikers would put labels in our reflection of one of God’s many gifts to mankind.
We set out to conquer the Mighty Rurimeria hills, leaving our pick up point at around 0445 hrs and started our hike at 1000 hrs. After about an hour, we were divided into 2 teams; Our guide Peter Thuita and one of the team leaders X-Ray King (all men), surged to the front and were at the summit by around 1500 hrs. The ladies (Nellie and Roseline) and I reached the summit about an hour later.
Lesson learnt:
1. as much as one is physically prepared for a tough climb, you also have to be psychologically prepared.
2. A good comfortable, hiking boot is an asset but you also have to be cautious even when tired to avoid injuries like sprains sustained while walking on the rugged terrain
3. A good mixture of breathing exercises, metered with walk-resting (at one’s own pace) and frequent sips of water, helps in combating altitude sickness.
What lessons did you take/learn from taking on this challenging hill?
Enjoy the wonderful moments we collected through pictures. Join us as we go back to the Aberdares on 6th March, to sample Njigari forest and its magnificent waterfalls
