So what is the best time to visit Masai Mara to see the Migration ?

Based on decades of experience, we would choose mid July to late August as the best time to see the migration, keeping in mind it is a gradual event that takes places over several weeks at different locations along the Serengeti Masai Mara border. If we were to narrow it down further to what month is the best to see the migration we would probably pick August.

Maasai cultural visit
Immerse yourself in authentic Maasai culture as you visit a traditional village, accompanied by an English-speaking guide who lives there himself.

Find yourself in the midst of the daily hustle and bustle of local life as you witness the daily rituals of the Maasai. Once you have drunk your fill of this authentic cultural experience, you can choose to browse through the Maasai Craft Centre and purchase artefacts made by the people you encountered. All proceeds from this go directly to the community.

Living a semi-nomadic lifestyle, the Maasai tribe has modernised in some ways but still adheres to many aspects of their traditional culture. Established as fierce warriors, their lively cultural dance, vibrant clothing and beautifully crafted handiwork are recognised worldwide.

The Maasai used to move nomadically with their herds to abundant lush pastures but these days they have built permanent huts or bomas and prefer to stay in once place. They are pastoralists and cattle is essential to their way of life. A man’s success is measured by the number of cattle and offspring he has. As great a status and show of wealth the cattle are, they are also a vital food source. This glimpse of authentic Maasai culture is a fascinating experience of an ancient way of life that still flourishes today.

4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser Safari Jeeps

These safari jeeps are universally used by Tour operators in Kenya and by most camps and lodges in Masai Mara as they tend to perform best in all-weather and all-terrain conditions. These Land Cruiser vehicles optimally seat 6 passengers but can seat upto 8 adults with an extra seat included and with one person sitting beside the Driver. The cars have multiple game viewing roofs. Reliable, robust and spacious enough while also being marginally more comfortable than the only other option, the Tour Van / Minibus listed below. You may see more detailed information on hiring these safari vehicles in Kenya at this page. Note that these vehicles come in stretched and normal versions, with the latter seating only 4 to 5 passegers. The open- sided versions of these (see below) are used exclusively inside the parks due to not being fully suited for highway travel.

Why Go on a Masai Mara Safari?

The Masai Mara National Reserve and its neighbouring conservancies form Kenya’s flagship conservation area and one of the top safari destinations in Africa. Its wide-open plains provide a sanctuary for an abundance of animals like elephant, buffalo, zebra, giraffe, hyena and the Mara’s famous big cats: lion, leopard and cheetah. And between about August and November every year, the Mara is a much-welcomed pit stop for unending masses of wildebeest that follow the rains on their death-defying, 2 900-kilometre (1 800-mile) circular journey.

Witness the wildebeest migration in the Masai Mara National Reserve

Thousands of visitors come to the Mara every year to enjoy some of the most authentic safari experiences in Africa. Here are a few reasons why we love a Masai Mara safari:

THE MAJOR MIGRATING ANIMALS
Currently, an estimate of two million wildebeests participates in the migration. Hundreds of thousands of zebras and Thomson’s gazelles join them. Although lions and other carnivores do not migrate with the grazing animals, they feast on them when their paths cross.

Safari means β€˜journey’ in Swahili and it was in Kenya that the concept originated! Kenya is renowned for its wide-open reserves and golden beaches, but it is best known for some of the most dramatic wildlife viewing in Africa, including the great annual migration.

Witness the wildebeest thundering across the savanna during the Great Migration in the Maasai Mara, come eye-to-eye with an elephant in Amboseli, or marvel at one of the great lakes of the Rift Valley. Safari in the north in semi-arid parks like Samburu with its unique species such as reticulated giraffe and Somali ostrich. Don’t miss Lewa Conservancy, Africa’s most successful rhino sanctuary.

A trove of coastal treasures lies beyond the world-famous safari parks. You can snorkel and dive in fish-rich coral reefs, relax on pearly beaches, experience the melting pot of cultures and cuisines in Mombasa and Malindi and explore tropical islands steeped in Swahili history.

Kenya is also the traditional home of the Maasai (nomadic pastoral herders). Other ancient tribes, such as the Kikuyu and Samburu, retain their traditional customs, living in relative harmony with the natural world.

Kenya is the most popular safari country in Africa and cheese cake Safaris strive to offer a great choice of safari styles for ultimate enjoyment of the famous national parks and reserves. Options range from short fly-in safaris, private tailor-made safaris to group tours. One of our experienced specialists is looking forward to sharing this beautiful country with you.

The great wildebeest migration is one of the most phenomenal natural spectacles in the world. It is an annual movement by millions of wildebeest, accompanied by large numbers of zebra, Grant’s gazelle, Thompson’s gazelle, elands and impalas across the greater Masai Mara-Serengeti ecosystem.

From July to September the Mara welcomes the Great Migration of thousands of wildebeest and zebra from the Serengeti in Tanzania to Masai Mara in Kenya. During the wildebeest migration, you will witness how the constant battle for survival makes the Migration Season a particularly exhilarating time to visit Basecamp Explorer Kenya.

HOT AIR BALLOON SAFARI
The Balloon Safaris offer you the opportunity to capture the vast Masai Mara plains with a bird's eye view! The balloon safari takes place at the crack of dawn to ensure that you experience the full splendour of the spectacular sunrise. Anything and everything can be expected as the balloon takes off with the gas burners warming you up from the early morning chill. You could see lions hunting, elephants running off (scared by the burners), hyenas laughing and the birds of prey hanging out on the large indigenous African greenheart trees.

The balloon will float over the Mara River where hundreds of hippos lay-in and on the banks of the river, ignorant of the large basket floating by. It is a breathtaking experience that ends with a sumptuous champagne breakfast cooked in the savannah. It is also the best time to see the extension of the greater Mara into the Serengeti. During the great migration, guests can capture the wildebeests attempting to cross the Mara River from Serengeti into Masai Mara as crocodiles, lions, hyenas, jackals and vultures eagerly wait to have a good meal.

The hot air balloon safari is a once in a lifetime experience that will surpasses all expectations. The flight takes about one hour depending on wind conditions. The pilot will award a certificate to each guest in memory of this exhilarating adventure
