Raise Our Children Foundation supports a school project in Kenya, by doing repair works as well as sponsoring children from poor families through education. To raise funds for this cause, this time we are doing something completely different by taking you with us to hike Mt. Kenya in March of 2024. The Maasai are a semi-nomadic ethnic group who inhabit most of Kenya and northern Tanzania, and are well-known by travellers for their distinctive customs and dress.

Although cattle ownership is still a central aspect of their culture, increased safari tourism has led many Maasai to become expert safari guides and camp managers.

From about August to November, one of nature’s greatest spectacles reaches the Masai Mara. The sheer number of wildebeest arriving in the area is staggering; the herds are so big they can be observed from space!

The Wildebeest Migration is a dramatic mass movement of almost two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle in a seasonal annual cycle driven by rainfall. To reach the Mara’s fresh grazing from Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, the wildebeest must make dramatic river crossings, facing enormous crocodiles that lie in wait.

Game viewing in the Masai Mara is excellent all year round thanks to its varied landscapes, wide open spaces, temperate climate and diverse population of resident game. Its champagne-coloured savannahs are home to safari heavyweights like lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo, plus popular species like zebra, giraffe, hyena, eland and gazelle. Rhino sightings are scarce, but these endangered animals can be spotted – if you’re in luck – in the Mara Triangle.

The Mara is renowned for delivering exceptional big cat (lion, leopard and cheetah) sightings. Cheetahs are particularly well adapted to the region’s flat plains, which makes the Masai Mara one of the best places to see these nimble predators. They often seek vantage points on fallen trees, termite mounds, and even game drive vehicles! It’s a highlight of any Masai Mara safari to watch the world’s fastest land mammal chase down its prey.

The Masai Mara National Reserve and its neighboring conservancies form Kenya’s flagship conservation area and one of the top safari destinations in Africa.

The month of July sees the start of the mating season in Tanzania’s 🇹🇿 Serengeti as the herds of 1.5 to 2 million wildebeest, zebra 🦓 and a host of other antelope make the incredible migration towards Kenya’s 🇰🇪 Maasai Mara. The herds will continue to graze their way northwards across the Grumeti River towards the Mara in preparation for the famous Mara River crossing 🐊

Between June and October the Maasai Mara plays host to one of the most spectacular wildlife shows on earth the great annual migration of over a million wildebeest and zebra as they enter the Mara ecosystem from the Serengeti in neighbouring Tanzania. A diverse geography means a variable climate across the country but Kenya is considered a year-round destination for both safaris and beach holidays.

Most Kenya safari destinations are at their best between January and the end of March; the climate is mild, mostly dry and game viewing is at its peak. Naturally, this time is considered the best time to go to Kenya on safari but a rainy season visit - between mid-March to June and again between October and December - is well worth considering in order to avoid the peak-season crowds and to take advantage of cheaper, off-season rates on accommodation and tours.

If however it's a case of choosing when to go to Kenya for the Masai Mara wildebeest migration, then go between mid-August and late October when the herds have returned from their months in Tanzania's Serengeti.

The best time to visit Kenya beach destinations is a moot point: Kenya's Indian Ocean coast is hot and humid all year round and rain can fall at any time. We would however recommend avoiding the coast during the mid-March to late May season when temperatures and rainfall are at their highest.

While there's no doubting the allure of the Masai Mara, visitors to Kenya who want less crowded safari destinations should head for the rugged Central Highlands.

Africa's second highest peak, the 5200m Mount Kenya looms over much of the region which includes great wildlife destinations such as family-friendly and multi-activity Meru National Park, the private Lewa Downs Conservancy in the foothills of Mt Kenya, the Mount Kenya National Park and the amazing forests of Aberdares National Park. With the majority of our Kenya safaris starting or ending in Nairobi, a stopover in this city is almost inevitable. International visitors will fly into Jomo Kenyatta Airport but it's Wilson Airport, some 90 minutes away, that provides regional and charter flights Kenya's safari destinations such as the Masai Mara.

Nairobi is an extremely lively city - the largest between Johannesburg and Cairo - and is one in which you can experience the authentic 'everyday Africa'. Downtown Nairobi is best avoided however, especially as most of the city's main places of interest - the Karen Blixen Museum, the Giraffe Centre and the Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage - are located in the city's leafy suburbs.

The Nairobi National Park, despite a startling backdrop of city skyscrapers, is a haven for lion, rhino, zebra and various species of antelope and serves as a great introduction to East Africa's wildlife.

Be cognizant of the iftar and suhoor times and plan your flight and driving itinerary around that. You never know where you will be when it’s time to break fast, there are chances of flight delays, car breakdowns etc. So pack your dates, granola bar, water etc to make sure you are prepared.

While some hotels may provide snacks for breaking fast, most don’t rely on the hotels to provide you with suhoor or dates.
