The Daily Grace- *When life "Isn't Fair"*
Read 1 Peter 3:12-17
"Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear their threats ; do not be frightened." But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander."
1 Peter 3:13-16
There's something in each one of us that longs for circumstances to be fair, isn't there? Maybe that's why fairy tales are so appealing. Good people receive their rewards and "live happily ever after" while bad people are soundly punished. Life works out, justice is done, and fairness reigns supreme.
Unfortunately, real life doesn't usually turn out that way. Every child needs to be taught, "Fairness is rare." Every tombstone could read, "Life is difficult."
Our lives are haunted by unfairness when we want fairness. Instead of justice we are surrounded by injustice. We want deceit exposed, dishonesty revealed, and truth rewarded. But things don't work out that way. At least not as we perceive them.
Truly life is difficult. But therein lies some of the best life's lessons.
As Christians we know that ultimately, good will triumph over evil and that our God is just and kind, and fair. But what can we do with the injustices and unfairness in the meantime? How can we keep pressing on in spite of such mistreatment?
Our response to unfairness, as with all other issues, is based on our perspective - the particular vantage point from which we look at life. We have two perspectives to choose from: the human perspective or the divine.
Building on the divine perspective, Peter gives us five ways we can live in an unfair and inequitable world.
First, consider yourself uniquely blessed by God ( 1 Peter 3:14a)
Second, don't panic and don't worry. (1 Peter 3:14b)
Third, acknowledge Christ as Lord even over this event. (1 Peter 3:15a)
Fourth, be ready to give a witness. ( 1 Peter 3:15b)
And fifth, keep a good conscience. (1 Peter 3:16).
Nothing speaks louder or more powerfully than a life of integrity. Absolutely nothing! Nothing can stand the test like solid character.
My dear friend, God's ways are higher and far more profound than our finite minds can comprehend. So , let's accept God's directions. Let's remember that the Lord is not only full of compassion, He is also in full control. He will not leave us without hope. Listen to the counsel of Peter. Calmly and quietly reflecting and putting into practice the five bits of counsel. May that be our portion.
Have a fruitful day.
