Scarface is one of the few lions in the world that do not need an introduction.
Tourists from all over the world come to visit Maasai Mara and he's high on their wish-list.
He is part of a coalition of lions called the four musketeers (now down to 3...).
His most distinctive feature is the scar above his right eye - a reminder of an injury that damaged his eyelid years ago (to answer the most common question - Yes, he does see through that eye!).
During our last safari to Kenya, we decided to make it one of our goals to see Scar one more time - mostly because he is an older lion and there's a chance that this will be the last time we meet.
We left camp very early in the morning and drove to the area where he likes to hang out, but the grass was very tall and we couldn't find him. It was getting hot and we knew that the chances of finding him were slim, especially since there are no other cars in the area that can participate in the search.
As we made one last search, I spotted 2 lions sleeping in the tall grass. We came closer to the lions, and found Morani, one of Scar's buddies, with a female. We then saw some lion cubs and a few females, and later on we even saw Sikio, the third musketeer. We knew that Scar was somewhere in the area, probably in the thick bushes that were nearby, and we decided to wait.
It was getting late, and just as we were about to give up and head back to camp, minutes before sunset, our guide Dee saw Scar coming out of the bushes!
It was a very exciting moment!
He was limping as he does these days, and walked out into the open and towards the setting sun, and... went back to sleep...
We've seen Scar before quite a few times, but this time we put a lot of effort and patience into meeting him, and we were the only car around, so we had him all to ourselves.
Hopefully he will stick around longer and we will meet again in the next few months...
In the first comment, I shared a short video of him sleeping as the sun is setting.
Hope you are enjoying a beautiful weekend wherever you are...
