Wild dogs at Mbulia Conservancy are one of the key highlights for wildlife enthusiasts visiting the area. The African wild dog (also known as painted wolf or Lycaon pictus) is a critically endangered species, and sightings of these animals are considered rare and exciting.
Wild dogs are often difficult to spot in the wild due to their elusive nature and wide-ranging habits, but the conservancy’s commitment to protecting wildlife has helped create a sanctuary for them as it's part of the vast Tsavo ecosystem.

Mbulia Conservancy is one of the best places to see wild dogs in Kenya, offering a rare opportunity for wildlife photographers, researchers, and nature lovers.

Happy world Cheetahs Day!
Cheetah cubs are extremely vulnerable to predators, and the mother must protect them diligently. At around 6 weeks, they begin to follow the mother on hunts, but it takes time before they can contribute to hunting.
Adult female cheetahs are usually solitary, except when they are with their cubs. They tend to have large home ranges and are not territorial in the strictest sense but may defend their space from other females.

The black leopard has been spotted in Laikipia, Kenya, but sightings are extremely rare. Laikipia is known for its diverse wildlife, and the presence of black leopards has made the area a must visit, especially for photographers.
The black leopard is a result of melanism, the same genetic mutation that causes the black coat, making them more difficult to spot in the wild. The leopard has been very elusive due to it ability to blend with the shadows in dense forests or at night. However, in recent times, it has gained more confidence and comes closer to the vehicle.

Elephants form strong, lifelong bonds with family members. They display behaviors that indicate affection, such as touching and entwining their trunks, and they often engage in cooperative activities like caring for the young.
They communicate through a variety of vocalizations, such as trumpeting, rumbling, and low-frequency sounds (infrasound) that travel long distances. These sounds help them stay connected with others over great distances. Elephants also use body language, such as ear flapping, trunk gestures, and touch, to convey emotion

Unlike most other big cats, lions are social animals and live in prides, typically consisting of several females (lionesses), their cubs, and a few adult males. Males often form coalitions to take control of a pride and protect territory from intruders, especially rival males.

Pride is usually led by a group of related females. These lionesses often share responsibilities for hunting and raising cubs. Lion prides are complex, cooperative social groups where survival is a collective effort, involving roles that vary between males and females, as well as among the lionesses themselves.

26/11/2024

African buffalo, also known as the Cape buffalo, is one of the most iconic and widely recognized animals in Africa. It is a member of the Bovidae family and is known for its power, social complexity, and importance in African ecosystems. They have a reputation for being unpredictable. While they are herbivores, they are considered one of the "Big Five" game animals (along with lions, elephants, leopards, and rhinoceroses) due to their dangerous reputation when threatened. A herd of African buffaloes can appear calm and peaceful, but if one of them is attacked the whole herd may charge to the rescue.

Buffaloes face threats from large carnivores like lions, hyenas, crocodiles, and wild dogs. Despite their size and strength, buffaloes are not immune to attacks, especially when they are young, old, or sick.
They can live up to 20 years in the wild, though many fall prey to predators before reaching old age.

Both hyenas and vultures play indispensable roles in their ecosystems, primarily as scavengers. They help maintain ecosystem health by breaking down carcasses, recycling nutrients, and controlling disease spread.

Hyenas are strong, opportunistic feeders that also hunt and manage carcasses at a deeper level (e.g., bones), while vultures specialize in locating and consuming decaying flesh, often cleaning up what others leave behind. Together, they support biodiversity, aid in nutrient cycling, and ensure the overall health of their habitats.

Cheetahs use elevated spots like termite mounds or rocks to gain a better view of the landscape. They will carefully scan the area for signs of movement, such as herds of antelope or other potential prey animals.Once prey is spotted, cheetahs often remain low to the ground to stay concealed. They may stalk their target, using the cover of grass or terrain features to reduce the chance of being detected. At a critical distance, they will burst into full speed to bring down the prey within the shortest time possible.

18/11/2024

Grevy's zebras (Equus grevyi) are a distinct species of zebra found primarily in the semi-arid grasslands of northern Kenya and parts of Ethiopia. They are easily recognizable due to their narrow, closely spaced stripes, which set them apart from the more common plains zebra. Grevy's zebras are the largest of the zebra species, with males standing up to 5 feet at the shoulder and weighing around 800 pounds.

These zebras are known for their unique social structure, as they tend to form loose associations rather than the large, tight herds seen in plains zebras. Grevy's zebras are herbivorous and feed on grass and shrubs. They are well adapted to dry, hot environments, often travelling long distances in search of water.

They are listed as endangered, with a population of fewer than 2,000 individuals remaining in the wild, mainly due to habitat loss, competition with livestock, and poaching for their distinctive pelts.

Nile crocodile (*Crocodylus niloticus*) is one of the largest and most formidable crocodilian species native to freshwater habitats across sub-Saharan Africa. They are known for their aggressive nature and can grow up to 16 feet (5 meters) in length, although most adults are smaller.

Crocodiles awaits for the right moment to ambush with incredible speed and power using their powerful jaws to capture and subdue their prey.

Their social behavior includes basking in the sun in large groups though they are generally solitary when hunting. Nile crocodiles also exhibit a remarkable level of parental care for their young, with females guarding their nests and even helping hatchlings to the water.

They are found in a wide range of habitats, but as apex predators, they play a critical role in maintaining the balance of their ecosystems.

Common zebras, scientifically known as *Equus quagga* are the most widespread species of zebra, found primarily in southern and eastern Africa. They are best known for their distinctive black-and-white striped coats which are unique to each individual much like human fingerprints.

Zebras are primarily herbivores grazing on grasses in open savannas grasslands and woodlands. They are social animals and live in groups called harems, which typically consist of a single male and several females with their offspring.

Their stripes serve various purposes, including camouflage, temperature regulation and possibly even deterring biting insects like tsetse flies. Despite their strong social structure they are territorial.
They are also fast running often reaching speeds of up to 65 km/h (40 mph) when fleeing predators.

14/11/2024

Hippopotamus (*Hippopotamus amphibius*) spend much of their time in water to keep cool and protect their sensitive skin from the sun. Despite their somewhat docile appearance they are known for being highly territorial and can be quite dangerous and aggressive, particularly males when defending their territory or protecting their pod. Their powerful jaws and large tusks are capable of inflicting significant harm. On the other hand Hippos are social animals living in groups called pods which can consist of a few individuals up to over 100.

Their diet consists mainly of grass and they typically graze during the night where they travel long distances in search of food and return to the water at dawn. Despite their size and weight they can run surprisingly fast on land, reaching speeds of up to 30 km/h in short bursts.

Hippos don't actually swim in the traditional sense they "walk" or "bounce" when they are submerged and to move they use their strong legs to propel themselves underwater, but they lack the ability to float on the surface. They push off the bottom to reach the surface for air then hold off breath for several minutes.
