Sundowners are a essential part of Safari and a major benefit to our health. Taking a moment to appreciate the wonder of the natural world, in this case the beauty of the Tsavo river in Kenya. Relax, absorb and reflect all that one sees in a day - it’s often such an overload of new experiences. This moment at the end of the day laughing and telling tales and joking raising our dopamine levels ensure for a good night ahead. A strong whiskey also helps! πŸ˜‚

We offer privately guided safaris and take you to remote or seldom travelled destinations by conventional travelers - to explore and observe the wonders of the natural world- be it extraordinary landscapes, beguiling wildlife experiences or interactions with the people who have depended on the land in its natural form for hundreds of years.

Africa makes you feel alive and her resilience, vibrance, colour, sounds and smells are mixed with a often melancholy fragility which brings us humans to a place where we are reminded that the wilderness has its own heartbeat and a vibration - that if we slow down, breathe, think and feel, we too can feel alive and a part of nature.

The Safari & Conservation Company (SCC) Kenya is a travel company specializing in tailor-made safaris to Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda. In addition to planning a once in a life-time safari, we offer ground handling services including flights, transfers and hotel bookings.

I was so lucky a couple of evenings ago finding this herd coming in for their sundowners- There is such a great story evolving with north Kenya’s elephants reflected in the fact that there are far fewer elephant on Lewa as they feel safer elsewhere - with the bans in place on the trade in ivory working so well and the Elephant Protection initiative in place - black market ivory prices have dropped from a high of $180 per kg in 2013 to $30 today - demand is down - poaching is down and elephant are safer moving further afield from their traditionally safe havens of the protected areas. For poachers the reward of killing an elephant for ivory doesn’t warrant the risk - for conservation authorities precious funds previously needed to resource anti poaching efforts can be directed into more constructive aspects of conservation - lives of rangers and poachers alike are being saved. What a winning out comes from such a complex political process to ban the sale of ivory.

Happy International Women’s Day from .

This year’s theme is β€˜Invest in women: Accelerate progress”. Women in Africa have been proven to be effective stewards of the environment, communities and life basically revolves them.

African women often serve as important educators and communicators within their communities. They help raise awareness about the importance of protecting natural resources, wildlife and ecosystems. Through their close ties to local communities, women can effectively convey the significance of conservation practices in ways that resonate with people’s daily lives.

Yesterday was World Wildlife Day, a day set aside to celebrate wild animals and plants. Every year, we recognize the unique roles and contributions of wildlife to people and the planet.

The WWD2024 Theme is Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation.

Technological innovation has made research, communication, tracking, DNA analysis and many other aspects of wildlife conservation easier, more efficient and accurate. Yet, uneven access to these new tools, environmental pollution and unsustainable applications of certain technologies remain critical issues for achieving universal digital inclusion by 2030.

Eastern Black Rhinos make a comeback in Kenya.

Words and photos by .

In a pivotal moment, Kenya is reclaiming its role as a haven for these creatures, establishing a vital breeding population at in Laikipia, Kenya, where they have been absent for the past half-century mainly due to poaching and long ago, trophy hunting. This first image shows the moment a rhino was resuscitated after it stopped breathing and quickly released. The arduous tasks of tracking, darting, and relocating 21 of these critically endangered giants, each weighing over a ton, posed formidable challenges, yet the teams from executed the operation with unparalleled expertise and dedication. Their efforts offer a glimmer of hope for the future of these magnificent creatures. The final image shows the skull of the last rhino poached in the 1970s resting beneath a celestial canopy, symbolizing this hopeful shift as Kenya now stands as a nation that is expanding habitat and bolstering rhino populations. With approximately 80% of the world’s remaining eastern black rhinos under its protection, Kenya is safeguarding endangered populations for future generations.

In a recent article in , we are proud to share that was featured as a resort for travel connoisseurs wishing to explore the breathtaking beaches and culture in the Lamu area.

The article describes beaches of gold sand in the exotic region and total privacy at Manda Bay in romantic cottages.

Here is the except from the online website:

β€œTotal privacy also at Manda Bay, a lodge on a languid strip of sand at the extreme northern tip. You can choose whether to stay in romantic cottages in the garden of palm trees and acacias or in villas directly on the beach. At high tide, swimming is done by diving directly from the private terraces.
Among the excursions organized by the lodge, there is one to the ruins of Takwa, a town founded in 1500 and abandoned in 1700, when its inhabitants moved to Stone Town.”

Did you know that our Director, Andy Roberts is listed in the Guinness Book of Records having spotted the most number of birds in a 24 hour period in 1986?

The world’s first famous "Big Day" record was set by the late ornithologists Ted Parker and Scott Robinson on 30 September 1982 in Madre de Dios, south-east Peru. With no use of motorized transportation (they travelled by foot and canoe), Parker and Robinson identified 331 bird species.

This record stood until 30 November 1986 when Terry Stevenson, John Fanshawe and Andy Roberts performed a 24-hour count in Kenya. Their team used two aeroplanes, among other vehicles, and resulted in 342 bird species logged.

More recently, a Louisiana State University team comprising Dan Lane, Mike Harvey, Glen Seeholzer and Fernando Angulo tallied 354 species, also in Peru, on 14 October 2014.
