A Rare Encounter with Giza, the Black Leopard 🐾
One of our wonderful guests, Mr. Bee Lingg, shared this amazing video with us of Giza, the melanistic black leopard. For over 100 years, no black leopard had been seen—until 2019, when one appeared in Kenya. This stunning female was named Giza, which means darkness in Swahili.
Mr. Bee Lingg spotted Giza during a safari with us in Laikipia. She only appeared for a few fleeting seconds before vanishing into the mysterious African bush, leaving us in awe. Melanism, the rare trait that gives Giza her black coat, is a recessive genetic trait, meaning both parents must carry and pass the gene on. Interestingly, Giza’s mother is a spotted leopard, while her father is melanistic.
Witnessing a black leopard in the wild is an extraordinarily rare privilege. What a gift it was to experience this magnificent creature, even for just a few seconds.
