The herculean operation to translocate Naromoru the Troublemaker to a new home:
Bulls are known for being mischievous — striking intellect, innate cleverness, and enormous size and strength can be a potent combination — but Naromoru takes it to the next level. This unruly elephant started up country, in the heart of Kenya’s Rift Valley. He became notorious for his pesky activities, destroying infrastructure and generally inviting himself where he wasn’t wanted.
To avoid further trouble, KWS relocated Naromoru to Tsavo West National Park. Unfortunately, everyone underestimated his commitment to chaos. Despite a relatively quiet debut in his new home, he was soon back to his old tricks.
Naromoru needed a new home — one in a remote, protected location, where he couldn’t get himself into trouble. Ideally, it would be a place with lots of bulls, who would both befriend him and perhaps keep his behaviour in check.
Luckily, we had just the spot: Ithumba, which sits in the vast, northern sector of Tsavo East National Park. It is a relatively undeveloped part of the park, far from any communities. It is also a favourite destination for Tsavo bulls. Naromoru would have plenty of space to roam and make friends, yet very little opportunity to cause mischief.
Translocating an elephant is a massive undertaking, with many moving pieces. After watching the video, delve into a play-by-play to discover exactly how this special operation unfolded:

Reposted from @sheldricktrust #tbt to one of our favourite Humpty memories: fiercely fun football matches (with a distinct hippo advantage!)
Humpty enjoyed playing football, although she wasn’t above cheating: When she tired of the game or thought she was losing, she would simply pick up the ball in her mouth, often deflating it and claiming victory in one fell swoop!
One’s time on earth isn’t a measure of the lives they touch. Humpty was with us for the briefest of months, but she made such a splash. In the short time she was with us, this little hippo lit up our world and captured the hearts of people the world over.
In the newest Field Notes, Angela Sheldrick reminisces about a special little hippo who is immortal in our memories. Read the story via our link in stories/bio or at:

Spot of the Week - Tough Old Bird 👀
Starring 'Faulu - the Lappet-faced leopard!!
✍🏾paulsgoldstein read full epic story via link in bio.
When you film or photograph wildlife, you yearn for originality over everything else. With no hyperbole, a leopard hunting a Lappet-faced vulture - Africa’s largest, with a nine-foot wingspan - is a first. Anywhere.
We have spoken to a dozen guides across Africa with 100,000+ game drives and none had seen this or even heard of it. Scour the internet and it’s the same.
It was windy, cold and grey, not ideal for cats when Sapit heard some distant zebras snorting. He noticed something happening in the crown of far away acacia. Driving carefully off-road to investigate he was astonished to find a young female leopard Faulu (Success) struggling with the huge bird.
Once dispatched, Faulu carried the cumbersome carcass to the ground dragging it a few hundred metres.
Watch the extraordinary footage from Jami Port @jamip1111 and @paulsgoldstein, edited with thanks to Dan Clarkson beyondafrica_films

The first rains have finally arrived in Tsavo — and with them come three very special orphaned elephants! This morning, Roho, Oldepe, and Neshashi took a giant step in their journey back to the wild and graduated to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit.
These three are probably the most well-practised orphans to ever make the move. We couldn’t graduate them until the rains broke, so while the drought held Tsavo in its grips, Roho, Oldepe, and Neshashi diligently conducted training sessions at the Nursery to prepare for the move. They proved to be excellent students — in fact, they were so attached to the moving lorry that they would even sneak back ‘after class’ just to hang out there!
The trio pulled into Ithumba at 8:40 this morning. They were greeted by the Keepers and ‘Class One’ babies, Mukkoka, Larro, Naboishu, and Musiara. We will share more scenes from their move, but we wanted to give you a peek into their first steps in Tsavo — the wilderness they will call home for the rest of their lives. After all, it is your support that makes these milestones possible for orphans like Roho, Neshashi, and Oldepe. Thank you!

Roho has given Ithumba life his splash of approval!
He was once our smallest Nursery baby, but time marches on and the moment had come for Roho to take the next step in his journey back to the wild. On Monday morning, he, Oldepe, and Neshashi bid farewell to their first home and travelled to our Ithumba Reintegration Unit in Tsavo, where they will learn to live as wild elephants. Graduations are a big deal for orphans, but this trio handled it magnificently. Roho has particularly enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with old friends from their shared Nursery days, such as Larro, Mukkoka, and Naboishi. At the end, you’ll see how Larro ably led the graduates towards their new bedroom, after a day out and about exploring Tsavo!
We will share a full account of Roho, Neshashi, and Oldepe’s graduation in the coming days, but we wanted you to be part of their first days in-the-moment — after all, it is your support that makes these milestones possible. Thank you for helping these special orphans progress in their reintegration journey!

Reposted from @sheldricktrust Introducing Doldol, our miniature miracle!
This little elephant is the smallest orphan to ever come into our care, claiming a title previously held by Ndotto. Her story began on a cold, windy night in northern Kenya, where a newborn elephant was abandoned in the heart of community land. Her mother must have been disturbed during birth and took off into the night, leaving her baby behind.
The deck is stacked against orphaned neonates, but Doldol has been blessed by guardian angels. First, a kind man from the community took custody of her for the night, keeping her warm and protected in his boma until our rescue team arrived.
Then, she had Mishak. Typically, a team of Keepers care for new rescues. However, a calf so small warranted extraordinary measures. Mishak is one of our most gifted and experienced Keepers. He has raised some of our most tricky orphan cases and is the unanimous favourite of any elephant he meets. We knew he would be the perfect ‘parent’ for Doldol.
And of course, she has you. Your support allows us to provide orphans like Doldol with the specialised, round-the-clock care they need to survive. This #GivingTuesday, your donation or adoption of an orphan like Doldol will automatically be doubled, dollar for dollar. Together, we could raise over one million dollars for conservation today!

Big or small, cats take their grooming routines very seriously. And when a considerable part of the day is devoted to keeping clean, it helps to have the right tools for the job. Curved, hollow-tipped spines on cats’ tongues (known as papillae) are perfectly designed to transfer saliva from mouth to fur and all the way down to the skin. Aside from the hygiene benefits, it’s also the perfect tactic for cooling off on a sweltering day as the saliva evaporates.

Breakfast of champions
The Newberry family with Kicheche Valley guide Bernard enjoyed front row seats to this daybreak robbery on the game rich Mara Naboisho plains. This poor young Enesikiria pride lioness abandoned by her male had just started her hard earned breakfast. She was no match for the hyena pack and guileful jackals who swiftly tucked into their favourite takeaway.
Thanks Amberleigh for the footage.
