Encounter with a gentle giant - Malasso approaching us while on an evening stroll down the main dusty road in Samburu National Reserve. As he walked past, keeping himself as close to the edge of the road as possible, he gave a slight turn of his head to take a closer look. You could see the whites of his deep brown eyes. There was no flinching, no flapping of ears or breaking his stride. He was super cool, trusting and calm. And then on he went. His padded feet gently crunching in the sand.

We’re celebrating Long’uro’s 4th rescueversary this week! We can’t believe it’s been four years since he became part of Reteti’s herd. We remember his rescue like it was just yesterday…

So much has happened since that day, and looking back on these four years, we feel incredibly blessed and grateful for every day that we get to learn from Long’uro.

He continues to make history, defy odds, and rewrite the books on elephant conservation and behaviour. His story is one of courage, determination, and resilience–as well as an indigenous community uniting for conservation!

To celebrate his unprecedented and extraordinary journey, join us in revisiting Long’uro’s life story over the coming days.

Sudan, the world’s last male northern white rhino, died six years ago today. In his final years, he became a global celebrity and conservation icon, helping raise awareness about the brutality of poaching.

Sudan was the last male northern white rhinoceros on earth — the end of an evolutionary rope that stretched back millions of years.

Although Sudan was the last male, he was not, actually, the last of his kind. He still has two living descendants, both female: Najin, a daughter, and Fatu, a granddaughter. Together, they provide a beacon of hope for the northern whites.

For the past few years, scientists from international consortium have been working to save them. Recently, the team achieved the world first rhino pregnancy through embryo transfer and the next step will be with a northern white embryo.

As we remember Sudan today we are full of hope that his legacy will live on and once again northern white rhinos will roam free across the plains of Africa.

Donate to our Rhino Recovery fundraiser today and help us save the northern white rhino.

I took this photo of Mercy, with her curled trunk cradled in her tusks, a year after arriving in Samburu. It’s not the perfect shot from a technical point of view but I’m proud of it. It was just by pure chance that I happened to even take it. I was driving in Samburu National Reserve late in the day on my way back to camp, and as I rounded a dusty corner there in front of me in the bush was Mercy and her family, the Virtues, asleep in the shade. Mercy was cradling her trunk in her tusks like she often does. I stopped the vehicle, scrabbled for my camera which was locked away in my camera bag safe from the dust and took some quick shots before Mercy suddenly woke up, unfurled her trunk and wandered off. I’ve seen Mercy in the park several times since then doing a similar thing with her trunk, but I’ve never been able to recreate this classic shot. It must be so relaxing for Mercy to be able to rest her powerful, heavy trunk in such a perfect ivory cradle. An elephant trunk has more than 40,000 muscles and can lift things (like trees) weighing up to 340kg!

🚫 Stop Trophy Hunting in Northern Tanzania 🇹🇿

Save the Elephants joins conservation partners, wildlife enthusiasts and concerned citizens, in calling for Her Excellency, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, to immediately ban elephant trophy hunting within the Tanzania range of Amboseli elephants following the recent killing of three cross-border bull elephants.

One of the two bulls killed in September has now been identified by our partner, the Amboseli Trust for Elephants, as Gilgil, a 35-year-old bull in the prime of his life. The killings end a 30-year pact between Tanzania and Kenya to protect iconic and endangered elephants that migrate between both countries.

Other Amboseli bulls are in acute danger from being hunted if they cross into Tanzania. Save the Elephants recently joined an alliance of Kenyan NGOs and Kenya Wildlife Service to deploy a tracking collar on a 34 year old bull, Esau, so they can track his movements and enhance the protection of others in the trans-boundary area, but more needs to be done to stop these senseless killings.

✍️ Please sign and share this important petition to stop trophy hunting in Northern Tanzania to save Amboseli’s migratory elephants. This petition was put together by WildlifeDirect, ElephantVoices, Amboseli Trust for Elephants and Save the Elephants: https://bit.ly/3vifiZF

Imagine a world where Najin and Fatu aren’t the last of their kind – where northern white rhino calves once again roam the plains of Africa.

Today, we’re launching Rhino Recovery, a crucial campaign to support our efforts towards the first northern white rhino birth since 2000.

Donate 👉 https://tr.ee/tJyePLjOgS

As you know, these two females are the last living northern white rhinos on Earth. But recent news ignited a spark of hope: scientists successfully created the world’s first rhino embryo, paving the way for a historic comeback.

The BioRescue Project successfully achieved the world’s first rhino pregnancy through embryo transfer. A southern white rhino embryo, created in-vitro from collected egg cells and s***m, was transferred to a surrogate mother on Ol Pejeta in September 2023.

Despite this milestone, unexpected challenges arose as the surrogate mother, Curra, tragically succumbed to climate change-induced flooding and dormant Clostridia bacteria spores in late November.

These setbacks, whilst heart-breaking, are viewed as opportunities for growth, reinforcing our dedication to preserving rhino species and their ecosystems. Right now, we are actively identifying new surrogate mothers for the next embryo transfer, this time with a northern white rhino embryo, marking the next phase of this critical conservation effort.

You can be part of their future and this pioneering effort to bring a species back from the brink of extinction. Every contribution propels us closer to a ground-breaking moment—the upcoming embryo implantation. Lend your support today and together, we can turn the tide of extinction and make a tangible impact on their future.

Five ways your contributions can help:

$10 could cover one bale of hay for Najin and Fatu.
$47 could help supply a patrol ranger with a medical pack filled with critical life-saving tools.
$100 could ensure a full month of veterinary care for Najin and Fatu.
$250 could support a northern white rhino caretaker’s monthly salary.
$500 could support the training of our anti-poaching dogs and their handlers.

Each of the six black rhinos translocated from Ol Pejeta Conservancy to Loisaba Conservancy were fitted with a specially designed transmitter. Holes were drilled into the horns of the rhinos and the transmitter was inserted and sealed off. This process is completely harmless to the rhino.

This cutting-edge technology is monitored by EarthRanger and allows the Loisaba team to monitor the rhinos with solar powered tags that provide regular updates of the rhinos locations. Information is fed back into the EarthRanger system so the team can better understand how the rhinos are adapting to their new environment and establishing territories. The data provided by the transmitters will also aid the protection and management of current and any future translocated rhinos.
