Forests, tree and shrub savannahs, deserts with sufficient vegetation. Lakes, rivers or marshes have, due to the large water demand (up to 250 lt per day), to be available in march distance.

Grass, leaves, fruits, tree branches leaves and bark. Food supply requirement per day 100-150 kg. Elephants are bad fodder recyclers, after approx. 12 hours the remains leave the body and then form a food source for various small animals. The seeds of the trees are excreted undigested and so scattered in a larger radius.

Diurnal and nocturnal, move over greater distances to obtain food. M are as loners or in bachelor herds on the way. W form small and large herds, led by an experienced female. At the waterholes elephants chase other animals. They swim well and love mud baths and showers of dust. Excellently trained sense of smell, smell water on distances up to 5 km. Visual and auditory assets rather weakly developed. The trunk serves as a nose as well as a versatile grasping instrument, that takes the food and water to the mouth, but also to spray the entire body with water or sand.

β€’ During courtship, a male and a female elephant will rub their bodies on each other and even wrap trunks. The females tend to run away from the males and he will have to pursue her. This game of cat and mouse can continue for a long time before actual mating occurs.

β€’ Males go through periods of β€œmusth,” where hormonal surges create behavior changes. The periods of musth are necessary for natural herd dynamics and successful breeding.

β€’ Male elephants fan their ears more when they are ready to mate than at other times. This allows them to get their scent out there at a wider distance to attract potential mates.

β€’ The females are ready to breed when they are about 14 years of age.

(6 tons/5,442 kilograms) and stand as tall as 12 ft. (4 meters) at the shoulder. The African elephant is classified as Threatened. HERD & SOCIAL BEHAVIOR Female elephants spend their entire lives living in large groups called herds. Male elephants leave their herds at about 13 years old and live fairly solitary lives, sometimes joining loose-knit β€œbachelor herds” of other male elephants, leaving at will to search for potential mates. Female elephants are called β€œcows”, male elephants are called β€œbulls” and babies are called β€œcalves”. A herd can consist of 8-100 individuals depending on terrain, climate, and family size. Female herds are led by β€œmatriarchs” often the oldest and wisest female in the group. An elephant will have 1 calf (twins are very rare) and the mother and all of the other females in the herd, including aunts, grandmothers, and sisters, will raise the baby. An elephant in the wild will rarely have more than four children throughout her life. Female elephants can start to have babies when they are about 14 years old and they are pregnant for 22 months (the longest pregnancy of mammals). The elephants closest living relative is the rock hyrax. Additional Facts Elephants have a slow pulse rate of 27. Humans average 60-80 and a canary pulse is 1000.
