Most famously, zebras have black and white stripes. Grevy's are the largest of all zebras, and they have long necks with prominent, erect manes. They have the largest ears of any zebra species, and their long, narrow heads give them a mule-like appearance.

The two major characteristics that set zebras apart from their two closest relatives are their very distinct black and white stripes and their untamable wild nature. The black and white stripes appear all over the zebra's body, even on their mane and ears. While their coat is black and white, their skin is dark brown or black. Grevy's zebra have about 80 stripes in all.

The Chogoria route is our recommended and arguably the most magnificent ascent route to the summit area. It is the driest route up the mountain and the walk beside the Gorges Valley is truly spectacular. This trip allows 7 days of time to acclimatize and ascend the mountain in safety. The "Round the Peaks" circuit is justifiably a magnificent tour to complete offering ever-new views of the summits, glaciers, and tarns with their unique high-altitude vegetation. The descent by the Sirimon route takes one through some beautiful forest tracks and completes the traverse of the mountain.
Accommodation on this hike is 4 nights in mountain huts and 2 nights camping. Nonetheless, if you prefer to camp you can do so all night on the mountain.
Day 1: Nairobi - Mount Kenya Bandas.
Depart from Nairobi at 0800hrs, driving through the agricultural country up to Chogoria town for lunch. After lunch, we take a 4x4 and drive up to the edge of the bamboo forest where we start our trekking through the dense bamboo forest for a distance of 10 km up to Mt Kenya Bandas. Dinner and overnight at the Mount Kenya Bandas.
Day 2. Mt Kenya Bandas - Lake Ellis Campsite ( 3,600m) 3hrs, 9km, 700m ascent.
After breakfast and sorting of porter loads we set off up the mountain at a nice and easy pace A slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis gives scenic views of Mugi, Ithanguni, and the Giants Billiards Table, whilst if we follow the river near the road head, upstream for about 3 km, the foreground scenery and flora is particularly beautiful.
Lunch on the banks of a stream, then it's time to cut up the left-hand hillside to our camp at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more "touristy" areas.

Day 3: Lake Ellis- Minto`s Camp. ( 4,200m) 4 hrs, 12km, 600m ascent.
Similar early start. Again well off the beaten track to follow a ridge up the mountain for about 3 hours to eventually join the tourist track on the normal Chogoria route at an altitude of about 4,100m. Breathtaking views over the Gorges Valley and back over towards Ithanguni and the Northern Moorlands.
Lunch is served at a small stream crossing, before continuing for a further hour to the Mintos Hut area at 4200m and our night's rest.
The afternoon is spent relaxing at camp, though a 10-minute walk to the "Temple" is well worth the effort. This is a 150 meters vertical cliff that gets its name from the position visitors often adopt when peering over the edge - they look as if they are praying.

Day 4: Minto`s - Austrian hut (top hut) 4 hrs, 7km, 500m ascent.
Today we begin our trek ascending up along the foot of huge rock walls. From the top, we`ll have an excellent view of Mt. Kenya. After ascending for a couple of hours you reach Tooth Col. From here you traverse until you reach the Austrian Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Austrian camp - Pt Lenana(4,985m) - Mackinders camp. 5 hrs, 285m ascent, 685 descent.
Leave at 5.00 am for predawn attempt, climbing for 1 hour across bare rock and scree slopes characteristic of the alpine region up to Pt Lenana - the hiker`s summit, arriving in time to catch the African sunrise. Descend to Austrian hut( Top hut) for breakfast. After breakfast descends to Mackinder’s camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Mackinders camp -Shipton`s Camp. 4 hrs, Ascent 300m, descent 400m
After breakfast, we go clockwise climbing up to Two Tarns and Nanyuki Tarns, and then pass between Oblong and Hausberg Tarns before descending to Shipton's camp on the Northern side of the peak, at about 4200 meters for dinner and overnight

Day 7: Shipton camp - Nairobi. 5 hrs, 14km, 900m descent
After breakfast, we begin a 5-hour descent via Mackinder`s valley to the Old Moses camp (3,300m). The descent is gentle and it offers ample time to enjoy fascinating scenery which includes the moorlands before reaching the camp for lunch. After lunch transfer back to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.

Amboseli is a national park in the southern Kenya overlooking Kilimanjaro the highest mountain in Africa. The park is well known for its large elephants herds commonly referred to as the kili elephants. These floodplains are marked with endless amounts of flora that are the last refuge for wildlife creating a more clustered game scene. This package includes a visit/possible accommodation in the southern region with an opportunity to hike the observation hill an excellent viewpoint.

Eye-opening East Africa great migration safari guide.
The great wildebeest migration cycle
This is the world's most popular migration epic in which close to 1.2 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras, and 400000 antelope migrate in a clockwise direction throughout the year in search of greener pasture. In the expensive quest for survival, about 250,000 wildebeest and 30,000 zebras die along the way due to the scathingly shifting drought patterns. Others get ambushed by predators or drown in the heavy currents of Mara river. This goes hand in hand with the natural replenishment that comes with the birthing of some other 500,000 wildebeest annually.
Even though changes in climatic patterns have made it hard to predict a migratory route of the scenic movement, here is one of the most popular routes that will help you plan for your migration safari in Kenya or Tanzania.
Calving

In January there is an influx of wildebeests migrating from the north into Ndutu plain region. Most of the female wildebeest are heavily pregnant. The Ndutu plains have some of the largest quantities of green pasture which makes it the ideal place for calving. Approximately 8,000 newborn wildebeest are born every day at the peak of this season. This subsequently leads to the reproduction of approximately 500,000 offspring annually. The calving and nursing season continue until March. A safari in this region allows you to witness some of the most dramatic predation scenes as opportunistic predators like leopards, lions, and spotted hyenas keep on ambushing the herds to sn**ch away the feeble infants from their mothers. With maternal instinct, you will see female wildebeest surrounding a calving colleague to barricade them from attacking predators. The best accommodation facility here is Kusini migration camp. Which is a semi-mobile camp migrating within the Ndutu region.

The good thing about a migration safari at lake Ndutu is that you have an opportunity to visit nearby Ngorongoro crater and conservation area famed for the 20 km wide caldera, the largest uneroded crater in the world and which is home to over 25000 large wild animals.

copulation and grouping
In April, the wildebeest migrate northwest towards the western Serengeti. Here, the males are sighted competing with receptive females for copulation. The long rains start and the roads turn slippery. Here you must hire a 4X4 land cruiser to avoid getting stuck. Around this moment, the migrating animals split into groups as they move towards Grumeti region in columns that can go up to a stretch of about 8 km.
Crossing river Grumeti
By the end of the first two weeks of June, the migrating animals start crossing river Grumeti. This marks the first huge task to tackle as they have to deal with huge Nile crocodiles who stop at nothing to take advantage of the boom.

Crossing of Mara river

Because of the limited grazing lands around the Grumeti plains, there is a quicker migration northward towards the Mara river. The mara river crossing has been the magnet that brings most travelers to the attention of the migration phenomenon at the start of July. The wide and steep channel bisects the Masai Mara and Serengeti and the Mara triangle on the other end. Mara river crossing is the most catastrophic event in the entire migration marked with massive deaths. A single wildebeest can live up to over 20 migration cycles throughout its lifetime, each cycle marked with a fresh mara river crossing challenge. The Mara river with throngs of crocodiles and scaring the wide fast-flowing river for a while hold the wildebeest on the Serengeti side. After moving through a long clockwise journey from southeastern Serengeti through other challenging events like the Grumeti river crossing the Mara river for a while seems to mark the end of the migration journey. Soon after grazing space thin out on the Serengeti side. Visibly on the other side, there is plenty of lush grasslands blended in the long rains that end in May. It is this imbalance that leads one daring member of the herd to plunge into the water, triggering the progression. The river crossing is marked by falling ground flakes from the bare steep river bank leading to an unsettling crowd of dust that may continue for hours until when the whole column has crossed over to the Mara side. Quite a number in the herd break their legs as they shove into the steep river bank and involuntarily get deposited in the fast-flowing channel where they are washed out downstream. You can view loads of carcasses trapped on the rocky parts of the river downstream. Soon after the herds start the crossover, the large Nile crocodiles that throng the river waylay in log-like camouflage, which makes them almost unidentifiable. In a flashlight, the reptile captures a victim and the herds are panicky as the victim struggled to salvage themselves without a success.

Migration in Masai Mara
Between July and September, wildebeest can be seen grazing in the reserve and neighboring conservancies. Predation is at its best over this season as lions and leopards keep on stalking the herds from the sparse riverine bushes dotted in the reserves. The Masai Mara is known for hosting one of the largest lions concentrate with about 900 lions living in the park and neighboring conservancies. A night drive in one of the Mara North conservancies will bring you closer to the much sought-after action, as lions do much of the hunting in the night than in the day.
After the river crossing epic, a stay in the Mara north conservancy is as good as staying in the triangle. Staying in the conservancies will lead you to better experiences like bush walks and night game drives which are not allowed in the main reserve.
