🛡️ Safeguarding creatives is not a side conversation it’s central to the future of our sector.
Because the truth is:
🎨 The creative sector is vibrant but not always inclusive.
🎧 It’s full of opportunity but not always safe.
📱Access to tools doesn’t guarantee protection from abuse, exclusion, or exploitation.
Led by HEVA GESI Lead Monica Wamuyu, we co-hosted a powerful Safeguarding Community of Practice convening alongside GoDown Arts Centre and Mastercard Foundation.
Held at Baraza Media Lab, the forum brought together key partners from across Kenya’s creative landscape to unpack real, often invisible challenges that creatives face including exploitation, gatekeeping, online abuse, and discrimination.
📊 Insights were shared from recent Sanara program research, spotlighting the lived experiences of young women and men working in fashion, music, film, and performing arts.
🎯 Through breakout sessions and case work, participants co-designed actionable strategies for embedding safeguarding into day-to-day practice including the nomination of safeguarding champions from skilling partners across the Sanara ecosystem.
We approach safeguarding not as a formality, but as a shared responsibility that supports dignity, accountability, and safer creative environments.
