The photography that is making the world go around. One of the last two white rhino specimens left on the planet, monitored 24/7 by a military so that poachers don’t kill it. With this photo, taken at a nature reserve in central Kenya, Matjaz Krivic won the award for “Best Travel Photographer 2022”.

This beautifully marked zebra foal was first seen in the Maasai Mara in Kenya in 2019 before moving south to the adjoining Serengeti in Tanzania during the annual migration of wildebeests and zebras between the two areas. The foal was named Tira by Antony Tira, a Maasai guide who first spotted it.

The foal exhibits a genetic mutation called pseudomelanism. Specialized cells called melanocytes produce melanin, the red, yellow, brown, or black pigment that determines hair and skin cell color in mammals. In zebras, melanocytes are uniformly distributed throughout their skin, so that a shaved zebra would be completely black. In the case of Tira and other pseudomelanistic zebras, it is believed that the melanocytes are all there, but the melanin itself fails to manifest correctly as stripes.

Most zebras with such unusual coloration don’t survive long. While it is harder for a predator to target an individual within a group of similarly marked prey, it is easier if an individual is different. Similar foals have been seen in Botswana’s Okavango Delta.
