The lifestyle of the Maasai people concentrates on their cattle which make up the primary source of food. Amongst the Maasai the measure of a man’s wealth is in terms of children and cattle. So the more the better. They believe that a man who has plenty of cattle but not many children is considered to be poor and vice versa. A Maasai myth says that God afforded them all the cattle on earth, resulting in the belief that rustling from other tribes is a matter of claiming what is rightfully theirs, a practice that has now become much less common.

What In The World Is A Dik-dik?
Unlike other African antelope species, there are no herds of dik-diks. They form monogamous pairs that stand guard over their own territory. Dik-diks grow to only a foot or so high at the shoulder, which means they can hide among the grasses.

Friday Fun Fact:

Zebras stripes are unique like fingerprints

Their black and white stripes are unique and are as distinctive as human fingerprints. When a foal is born, they have reddish-brown stripes which gradually become darker and change to black as they grow. Scientists believe their stripes may have a social purpose and help zebra recognize each other.

The Great Wildebeest Migration in Tanzania and Kenya – Serengeti Migration and Masai Mara Migration – is one of the last mass wildlife movements left on Earth. It’s the chief reason why so many travellers venture to Kenya and Tanzania for a Migration Safari.

The Migration is one of nature’s greatest spectacles… timing is vital, but there is no way to predict the timing of the animals’ movements. We know that the wildebeest and some zebra and antelope, will cross the Mara River – but nobody knows exactly when. We also know that rain will trigger the wildebeest to move onto fresh grazing areas, but nobody knows exactly when the rain will fall.
A typical guideline is October - June - Serengeti- Tanzania & July - September - Maasai Mara - Kenya.
We have been arranging Migration safaris in Tanzania and Kenya since 1967. If you're looking for expert planning advice, get in touch! [email protected]

Today is World Rhino Day! World Rhino Day is significant as it celebrate these creatures, highlights their dwindling numbers and the immediate threat of extinction they face, and to gather support from communities, governments, and individuals to ensure their survival.

Rhinos play a role in landscaping as they naturally manage the grasslands, ensuring that these ecosystems are well-balanced for other species to thrive. However, rhinos are in danger. The horn of the rhino is wrongly believed by some to have medicinal properties and this has led to rampant poaching. The illegal trade of rhino horns is pushing them to the brink of extinction. This day aims to correct these misconceptions and rally the world towards more sustainable conservation efforts. Five Species: There are five different species of rhinos - Black, White, Greater one-horned (or Indian), Javan, and Sumatran. Each has its unique characteristics and habitats, but all face threats of varying degrees.

Close to Extinction… The Javan and Sumatran rhinos are critically endangered, with only a handful of individuals left in the wild.
