Just came back from our June 2024 A Giving Safari - Olmalaika Trust, Kenya last day out in the Maasai Mara National Reserve ~

In one tree the leopard had her original kill - a full grown female bushbuck, and then when a hyena started snooping around she brought up another kill into the tree next to it - this time a baby bushbuck - maybe a newborn or maybe the mother had been pregnant, either way the leopard was not sharing ANYTHING with the wishful hyena

It's incredibly sad that the Maasai Mara National Reserve has stated they will no longer allow private vehicles into the park -

As a child I grew up spending numerous days/nights with my parents in the Mara and as an adult we packed up the vehicle almost every month with our own tent, sleeping bags, little gas stove and food - drove down to the Mara with our children and enjoy the incredible wildlife and beauty that the Mara has to offer.

Our kids are grown now - but they will never forget their childhood - and how they learned to identify the foot prints that seemed to silently appear in the morning around the tent, the sounds of the birds and animals and enjoy the silent moments just before the leopard pounced in its dinner or watch a cheetah zig and zag thru the savanna after its prey. Our children didnt need a safari land cruiser or a "guide" to educate them - they had their parents - parents who loved time in nature and enjoyed family time.

To think those chilly early mornings where our children could see their breath as they stood on the back seat of our Pajero looking out the hatch or simply enjoying a bowl of granola, a cold glass of mango juice or a mug of hot chocolate as a family in your own vehicle while watching a pride of lions eat their breakfast are gone makes me sad.

We have turned into a world of greed - a world that struggles to give - always needing more, bigger and better.

Truly a sad day for families that simply enjoy nature and personal time.

As of September 2023 KWS (Kenya Wildlife Services) began charging guests Nairobi Park Fees for visiting Sheldricks.

Sheldricks cost is $20 per person
KWS is now requiring $45 per person which include surcharges and a parking fee of approx $5 as well as a $5 fee for your driver.
*Cash is not allowed - they require it to be paid via a credit card which incurs extra service charges.

So please note there will be the following additional costs for the remainder of 2023 when visiting Sheldricks for their public viewing at 11am.

$75 per person

*Note we have not confirmed KWS park fee costs for 2024 yet, but it sounds like it will be $100 per person which would make a visit to Sheldricks - $130 USD (approx) per person.

Are you coming to the Maasai Mara National Reserve? If you are going in or out of the Sekenani Gate be sure to stop by at the Beats Of Beads Trust and while there take a minute or two and enjoy one or more of these yummy chocolate bites and a cup of tea or a cold drink.

Its even a perfect place to pop in while your driver/guide is paying for your entry into the Reserve - they have a little gift shop that has items that the beading ladies in Sekenani make as well as other items and a Bead Museum that you can visit and it only takes about 20 minutes to be guided thru it and learn more about the history of beads in Kenya.

Plus super clean and nice washrooms!

*Note there is a cost for visiting the Museum - which goes to help cover the costs of the museum and pay the staff.
*And while inside their gate you wont be hassled by all the ladies selling items at the gate 😉
