Mt. Satima Aberdares Trail Hike–Aberdare Ranges 14th August 2021:
Mt. Satima Aberdares Trail Hike; The scenic summits, valleys and hills are a hikers’ paradise. Hikers have a choice of trails based on the elevation and terrain. The range’s highest summit, Oldonyo Lesatima, is just above 4,001m above sea level and is on the north of the range. The Satima trail is the most scenic and gentle of all the Aberdare trails, with the route hugging the escarpments above undulating valleys and hills of rich alpine and sub-alpine flora, including species of lobelia, erica, giant helichrysum and tussock grasses. The hike offers an incredible mountain experience and is ideal for those acclimatizing to hike high mountains like Mt Kenya or Mt Kilimanjaro.

CAMPING AT LAKE ELLIS
Mt Kenya is home to five glacial lakes and quite a number of tarns. The lakes are Lake Ellis, Lake Michaelson, Lake Rutundu, Lake Alice and Lake Hohnel. The most popular being Lake Ellis and Lake Michaelson. Located on the eastern slopes of Mt Kenya in Meru County at 3,470m asl, Lake Ellis possesses a beauty that will captivate anyone daring enough to take the journey there. Lake Ellis - located at the base of Mugi Hill, it was named after Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis - the first European to reach the lake back in 1927. Occupying 28 acres of land, it is the third largest lake in Mt. Kenya.

That's a true reflection of all our hikes , both in Mt. Kenya or Mt. Kilimanjaro or even other simple hikes....

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro produced more lessons than the word count here will allow. I could write a book just on the experience and how it relates to life & business.

One quick one...

Only 50-60% of those who begin the trek reach the summit. A near 50% failure rate.

When I put this trip together I invited 13 other top business leaders. None of us had any experience climbing mountains. No professional athletes. Age range from around 35-45 and some were not in great shape at all.

Just 14 regular guys who have crushed in to some of the highest levels in business.

There was also a group of German University athletes at the camp we met the day before we started. All current athletes, ages 19-23, and in perfect shape.

We were all thinking, “Damn these guys are going to have NO problem!”

I’ll spare you all the details of our trek but almost all of us threw up because of altitude sickness. One got rushed to the hospital, another went in to cardiac arrest (thank God we had a Doctor with us), and another one had to be carried down because of severe altitude sickness.

Naturally, what would you think comparing the two groups?

The regular person would naturally assume the German athletes all made it to the top but several of the “normal guys” failed to reach the summit.

But if you understand the psychology of a business leader understanding that “How you do anything is how you do everything”, you probably already know the results...

100% - 14 out of 14 of us “regular guys” made it to the top.

Several of the German athletes quit and never saw the mountaintop.

Why?

The athletes were clearly superior in every way EXCEPT the one way that matters the most which is THE WILL TO WIN.

Despite the pain, sickness and utter and complete exhaustion, the 14 of us had an undeniable desire to win. Quitting was simply not an option.

When you feel like quitting, like many of us did, just keep taking ONE more step & you’ll reach the top!

*Mount Meru*
Often considered a warm up for Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru by its own right is a stunning mountain to climb.Standing at 4,566m high, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second highest mountain. Although standing over a 1000 meters shorter than Kilimanjaro, Meru is an incredible free standing active volcano that offers views and wildlife sightings that is unparalleled in Tanzania.
Situated roughly 70km Southwest of Kilimanjaro and East of the Great Rift Valley, Mount Meru last erupted in 1910 and can therefore still be classed as an active volcano (although dormant). Exploding into life over 500,000 years ago, Meru’s horseshoe rim is very distinctive as the entire eastern flank was blown apart by the explosion. Not only is Meru the fourth highest mountain in Africa, but its rim lined crater extends down 1,500 meters to the crater floor making it one of the tallest cliffs in Africa. Because of the abundance of wildlife on and around Meru, it is compulsory to be accompanied by an armed ranger on your trek at all times.
*Why Climb Mount Meru*
Even with its incredible views, scenery and wildlife, Meru is often overlooked due to its location. 70km away stands Meru’s big brother – Kilimanjaro. This means that most international visitors will either visit Meru as a secondary destination or warmup whilst some visitors will ignore it altogether. Although to climb Mount Meru as a warmup for Kilimanjaro is by no means a bad idea, Meru is a stunning trek by itself!
Lying within Arusha National Park, the lower reaches of Mount Meru are amazingly rich in wildlife. You are almost certain to see monkeys, warthogs, buffaloes and a wide array of birds and, if you’re lucky, elephants and giraffes! The crater rim walk is a spectacular hike and the 360 degree views from the summit of Meru are not to be missed, especially as you can see Kilimanjaro!

Another bonus of climbing Mount Meru is the lack of crowds that can sometimes plague Kilimanjaro. As its little known brother, Meru is a fantastic way to avoid this and get stuck into a peaceful trek.
