A highlight for many Tamasha Afrika's Safari travellers is coming into contact with the Maasai, a semi-nomadic, pastoral indigenous tribe whose ancestral territory stretches across southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. Since many of their communities abut or lie within the bounds of popular game preserves—including Maasai Mara, Ngorongoro, and Amboseli—many of the camps and lodges we use for our safaris employ them as guides and staffers. It’s also common for safari guests to visit their villages or see them out in the savannah: men herding livestock; women carrying water or firewood.

This solitary, well-camouflaged, agile hunter is the most resilient of the big cats. They thrive in all habitats, ranging from rainforests to deserts, and even on the edge of urban habitation. Although extremely widespread, leopards are notoriously hard to spot, except in a few select locations where they have become habituated to humans. Read on for some of the best places to see leopards in Africa.

A typical day on safari

“Knock-knock,” says the man outside your tent with a tea tray in his hands. What kind of holiday is this, you might ask, being woken at 6am? But sunrise in Africa is not to be missed. Where else can you sit in bed and hear lions roar at the dawn?

In Africa, the first and last hours of the day are the best, and the early start is so you can be out in the bush while the big cats are still active. Later, when the day warms up, they will go flat in the shade, and so can you on returning to camp for brunch after your first game drive of the day.

A group, or pride, can be up to 30 lions, depending on how much food and water is available.

Diani Beach

Based on the number of visitors in recent years, Diani Beach is the most popular beach in all of Kenya. Diani is easily accessible from Mombasa and boasts plenty of amenities and infrastructure.

You’ll find a wonderful coral reef right off the coast, plenty of shade provided by the groves of palm trees and underwater sandbars. Whether you want to swim, snorkel or surf, you can do it all at Diani Beach. You can also expect plenty of great bars and restaurants in the area, not to mention an abundance of beachfront resorts.

Ask anyone what color an elephant is and you may get a raised eyebrow (or two) but the answer will normally be grey or perhaps brown. Red would most certainly not be the answer, yet in Kenya’s Tsavo National Park, red elephants wander across every horizon.

Hippo’s Cannot Swim – We Know, It’s Shocking!

Hippos spend pretty much their whole lives in water, so it really doesn’t sound right when you hear that they actually cannot swim. It is true though, the main reason they spend so much time in the water is mainly to protect their extremely sensitive skin from the harsh African sun.
Many people think hippos are great swimmers when in reality, they cannot swim at all!

When you see a hippo in a body of water, they’re actually balancing on their tippy-toes or standing on a sandbank. Hippo’s sink when in deep water, which isn’t too surprising considering males can weigh up to 3 200 kg’s! So when a hippo is underwater, they aren’t swimming but rather trotting along on the bottom.

It’s more than just a memory to cherish or photos to capture, going on safari can benefit your overall health.

Here’s how going on a safari can positively IMPROVE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Research shows that spending time walking in a natural environment, compared to walking in an urban area, can significantly decrease both self-reported rumination and neural activity – the part of your brain that is associated with heightened risk for depression and other mental illnesses. If you spend your time in an office or other workplace environment, we find our stress levels reduce when spending time in natural settings.

There’s a reason why, aside from helping reduce the affects of climate change, that cities are planting more green areas around office buildings!

The oldest lion in the Kenyan Mara, 14-year-old Scarface, known for a scar across his eye and loved and discussed passionately by wildlife enthusiasts and big cat nerds from all over the world, breathed his last on June 11. The lion, accorded an unofficial but undisputed legendary status by experts and enthusiasts alike, held a territory of 400 sq km.
