The king of the jungle.

! When Jane first arrived in Kenya to visit a family friend, she was thrilled to finally be living among African wildlife. By chance, she met Dr. Louis Leakey — famed paleoanthropologist — who luckily needed a secretary. Coincidence or fate may have it that Jane had a secretarial degree! Working for Leakey, he recognized her tenacity and her breadth of self-taught animal knowledge. He saw her potential and assigned her to study chimpanzees in Tanzania — despite not having a formal college degree. Leakey appreciated her fresh insight, unfiltered by academia. However, after her findings caught the attention and critique of the wider scientific community, he decided that a PhD in ethology — the study of animal behavior — from Cambridge University would be an important next step in increasing her credibility, opportunities, and learning!

Though Jane's story is pretty exceptional (and it's important to remember how we can create more equitable opportunities for all in research and beyond), it's a good reminder to follow the advice of Vanne, Dr. Goodall's mother: "Take advantage of every opportunity. Work very hard, and never give up."

Visiting and interacting with the semi-nomadic pastoralist Masai tribe of Kenya. This Nilotic ethnic group habitat is spread out across northern, central and southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. Known world over, this local tribe is most recognized for their adaptability, living in harmony with the wild animals in the areas surrounding East Africa's most popular wildlife conservation areas. Their distinctive customs, dressing style and dance puts them in a class of their own, having maintained this heritage from hundreds of years into the modern world we live in.
