How Man-Eaters came to be.

The detailed history of lions in the context of rail builders at Manyani dates back to the early 20th century during the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway, also known as the Lunatic Line. Manyani, located in present-day Tsavo West National Park, was a significant area for railway construction.

During this time, lions in the Tsavo region gained notoriety for attacking and preying upon railway workers, leading to a series of man-eating incidents that claimed numerous lives. The most famous incidents occurred between March and December 1898 when two maneless male lions, often referred to as the Tsavo Man-Eaters, terrorized the construction site.

These attacks became the subject of widespread attention, with residents being principal figures involved in efforts to hunt down the man-eating lions. They eventually succeeded in hunting down both lions, but the incidents left a lasting impact on the region's history and contributed to the legend of the "man-eaters of Tsavo."

The presence of lions in the Manyani area continued to be a concern for railway builders and workers, as the region remained a habitat for these apex predators. The encounters with lions during the construction of the railway further shaped the relationship between humans and wildlife in the Tsavo region and influenced conservation efforts in subsequent years.
