The school holidays are once again here! To a few parents, this is a very good time to prepare for and take their children on holiday. To most parents however, such a two month school holiday brings worries – worries about how best they can engage their children in positive ways. The reasons for this worries vary: they have no home libraries or any books for homework or leisure reading; a few books could be available at home but the home environment is not conducive for reading; some children and youth are simply easily distracted by the many home activities; some children and youth are curious about the ongoing political activities and will simply get out and join any gatherings that may appear in their localities; some will get into life-threatening activities and unprotected s*x leading to early parenthood… the list is endless.
Kongoni Community Library, in partnership with Hellen Amunga & Gaudencia Malimbe believe it is possible to curb against the above possibilities by engaging adults, youth and children in constructive ways. Thank you Hellen Agnes for your immense assistance. We intent to keep the community busy most of the day through reading, public lectures on leadership and governance; digital wellness; life skills; HIV/AIDS and STIs; fast aid and various sports activities. We have already done a lot of publicity over the past few weeks and we expect to have a large turnout. We are however short of capacity in terms of human resources/volunteers, chairs, tents, water and snacks. We are therefore appealing to able community members to contribute towards this noble cause by contributing toys, books and other reading materials like daily newspapers, tents and chairs for extra reading space, snacks, and any other form of relevant support including financial. We appeal for more professional volunteers to join us as we serve our communities.
We wish to recognize and appreciate the support we have received from American Friends of Kenya and Jean Penny. We would also like to recognise Air Travel & Related Studies Centre. for accepting to give a lecture on Career Development to the students completing their KCSE, Della Mwihaki, Agness Mwihaki and many others who have accepted our call for assistance.
